Revolution Cycles now a Specialized Concept store

By Press Office · 60 comments

Revolution Cycles, owned and run by the Kotze family has teamed up with Specialized Bicycles to open up a Concept store in the heart of Cape Town. Situated in Bree street on the foot of Table Mountain, the setting could not be any better. Revolution Cycles has truly become a shopping destination for locals and foreigners alike.

“The different levels in the store made the design process an interesting one. The final result is a very unique retail environment that has an open, yet warm and personal feel. Any type of rider can walk into the shop and experience a tailored area for their riding style. The dedicated women, road and mountain experiences showcase a full range of products. Another great addition to the shop is the Body Geometry Fit studio and full time Body Geometry Fit technician. This service offers the possibility for cyclists in the Mother City to enjoy cycling the way that it is intended and to achieve the Body Geometry Fit slogan – Be one with your bike,” said Peet Le Roux (Retail Manager).

“It is an absolute pleasure to be associated with the Stirling family. This is our first concept store in Cape Town and and we are excited to build a partnership with the guys from Revolution Cycles,” said Bianca Grobbelaar (Marketing Manager).

“Five years ago we took on Specialized bicycles for the first time. I did not think that we were good enough, but my dad said ‘My boy, we will make it work’ and since then we have not looked back. We are very excited to open up a concept store here in the heart of Cape Town and we are very proud of what we have to offer. We want to keep the rider on their bicycle. It’s not always about winning, its about finishing with a smile on your face,” said Stirling Kotze jnr (Revolution Cycles Owner).

Fitting in perfectly with the coffee culture in Cape Town, Revolution cycles has their own ‘Che Cafe’ on the side walk of Bree street.

Personally never felt welcome when I've been there, maybe I'm not "local" enough for them to take my money

bru, first rule of shopping in Bree Street - you gotta be hip. No hip, no joy.

This rule is multiplied exponentially by the Spaz factor.

A friend of mine had her bike serviced there, only for a "mysterious" scratch to appear on the front Maxle.

They denied it, and I ride with her and I am sure that it is NOT even the Maxle that was on her bike before the service.

Another friend was in the shop for ages and eventually walked out when no one assisted him

So I really hope they make this concept work

I was in the Specialized Concept store that opened in Somerset West a couple of years ago. While I'm not against the brand, I am against the snobbery that was obvious. I hope they don't become like that...

Is that store still open?

snobbery is subjective and not limited to any brand / type of store. I cannot recall ever feeling unwelcome in any bike shop before. Maybe I am just thick-skinned or maybe I engage with people differently to how others engage them. Oh, and just for the record, I am a guy in my late 30's with a beer gut weighing about 100kg, so I don't even look the part either. I often go into shops just to have a look and I don't have a Tag on my wrist or wear an Armani suite either.

I like this shop, very clean and tidy. I know most specialized owners will love that shop, but I am not specialized owner and I will prefer a shop that sells at least 5 branded bikes, so that I can compare and test them before I buy it. How can I compare if they only sell Specialized bikes?

With Cyclefunatic losing the Spez dealership, and the concept stores in Town and Somerset West, the only Spez shops are Paarl, Bmt Stellies and Bridge cycles. My options are becoming less and less, too many more of these concept boutiques and I will have to change my brand.

the business model is too displace regular store volume to concept stores because they believe that's what a Spaz owner wants.

So they use the regular stores to grow their brand and then ditch them and create competition against those very stores.

the process of moving to a concept store is an all or nothing approach and they dictate terms to which you the store owner hand them a tub of Vaseline.

And then you will always get people who tell you that this is "just business", etc. In my opinion, companies that do this (in any trade) should be ashamed of themselves.

It is just not on.

Did not buy my bike there; don't know the guys from a bar of soap.

Went in the original shop a few times as a noob/stranger and the okes were always helluva helpful and friendly, especially that oke with the 'tache.  Total value of purchases each time was insignificant.

.

Mate of mine had his bike serviced there (bought elsewhere) and was very, very happy with the service.

.

But "Spez" + "Concept" is ALWAYS going to drag the haters out the woodwork.

I don't follow?  You'll leave Spez because there are too many Spez concept stores and too little mixed retailers?

I always get discount. They always hook me up with a deal or throw in a something extra.

Lend me tools when I need them, lend me wheels when I break my own, source kit no one else. Can get me, send me elsewhere when they can't help me.

Haters gonna hate I guess.

I like supporting shops that know what I ride. For me that's Revolution and Kroff.

Same here. SJ hooked me up with a great deal on a number of occasions

Not mixed retailers, normal bike shops. Not these fancy stores full of lights and bikes and sky high prices. These concept stores remind me of some shops in the V and A waterfront, where there are 4 guys inside with suits, 2 items of clothing, and no customers. I have had the worst experience with the Somerset West concept store, twice. Went to the Revolution store to look at a Specific bike over the holiday period, the guys in there were no really helpfull, and they did not know the Spez product range. So why must I bother.

I will stick to the smaller shops, where I get great service and much better prices.

hijack: go drool over a yeti at thegearchange instead.

edit: will add something meaningful to the debate.

it is impressive that the sport has grown to the extent that shops like this can operate, clearly with big budgets, professional shop fitters etc, when I stareted mountain bicycling g my LBS was a little semi detached house in salt river painted turquoise....before the area became trendy.

so yes this place looks impressive, perhaps its the right environment for a 40something director to drop R80 to R120+ K on a carbon full suss 29er that he just has to have in order to ride off road.

suppose there'e a reason why they sell Aston Martins at the waterfront and Kia's in Paarden Eiland.

want to shoot the breeze with the mechanic pull into your LBS, want to get "wow'ed" by a lot of trademarked jargon and drop R100k, you know where to go

Not sure who you dealt with but SJ and his dad certainly know their products. They employed a bunch of new staff recently so that would be understandable.

Furthermore, they're no more expensive than any other Spez retailer. They sell at RRP and give discount.
