Specialized are not hanging around with their Turbo e-MTB platform. Ever since the launch of the Turbo Levo in 2015, the brand have made it clear that they intend to lead the e-MTB conversation. Now, hot on the heels of the launch of the Turbo Levo Gen 4 in April last year, they’re introducing the Turbo Levo R: a lighter, sharper, more XC-orientated sibling that channels all of the Levo 4’s power into a revised “Rally” chassis. Here are our key takeaways after a pre-launch ride on the trails of Jonkershoek.

What’s New?
Where the Levo 4 is the capable all-rounder with 160/150mm of travel, and mixed wheels, designed for big trail days, the Levo R strips things back in pursuit of agility. Specialized use the term “Rally” to define the bike’s core identity. Meaning: fast, agile, light and low. Travel drops to 140mm front and 130mm rear, both wheels are dedicated 29ers, and the frame sheds 530 grams over the Levo 4 through a purpose-built FACT 11m carbon chassis. Specialized claim it’s possible to get an S-Works complete build down to just 18.8 kg, which is pretty remarkable for a full-power e-MTB.

The heart of the bike remains the Turbo 3.1 motor, producing up to 850 watts of peak power and 111 Nm of torque on S-Works models (810 W / 105 Nm on other models). Specialized’s GENIE suspension technology returns with a Rally-specific tune, delivering a coil-like spring curve through the first 70% of travel before ramping up progressively in the final 30% to resist bottom-outs. The modular battery system offers an 840Wh stock battery, with options to go lighter with a 600Wh unit or extend range to 1,120Wh with the 280Wh Range Extender.
The geometry is highly adjustable. A three-position head tube, two-position bottom bracket, and chainstay flip chips allow riders to fine-tune the setup to their terrain and style. In its stock configuration, the S4 sits at a 65-degree head angle, 77-degree seat tube angle, 480mm reach, and 339mm bottom bracket height.
The geometry is highly adjustable via a three-position head tube, two-position bottom bracket, and chainstay flip chips, but the more interesting story is how it compares with the Levo 4, and how this translates on the trail. The Levo R sits shorter and lower overall, with a steeper head angle, less trail, and a bottom bracket 11mm closer to the ground. That translates directly into quicker steering, a lower centre of gravity, and a more planted feel through corners. The longer chainstays bias weight rearward to maintain traction on steep climbs. As a geometry package it feels agile and responsive without sacrificing control.

First Impressions
I’ll be honest, when I first learned there was another Levo on the way, I was sceptical. I thought, “Surely not another Levo. How different can it be?”. The answer is, in fact, quite different.
My biggest takeaway from this first ride was how the Levo R addresses something I’ve always struggled with on e-bikes: weight and handling. As a lighter rider who is more at home on an XC bike, I tend to find the more trail-orientated e-MTBs cumbersome to manoeuvre. They’re powerful, but the combination of weight and longer, slacker geometry can make tight switchbacks and playful singletrack feel like hard work: particularly keeping the front end down on steep sections, and threading through tighter rock sections.

The Levo R is noticeably different. The geometry and shorter travel give it a snappiness that I didn’t expect from a full-power e-bike. It climbs like a goat. The geometry puts you in a position that promotes an active, engaged riding style. It encourages you to put power in, and the motor delivers it back in multiples, all while maintaining well-mannered handling, making it easier to manage the power, maintain traction, and keep the front wheel down on corners, steep sections and technical climbs.

I absolutely loved it on the downhills as well. I felt more in control, and less like the bike was taking me for a ride, than I have on full-power e-bikes in the past. The suspension works beautifully at soaking up rocks and gives excellent support when cornering. There is no diving or wallowing, and the steering is nice and precise. I felt absolutely composed and comfortable on the bike, in a way that doesn’t always happen on a first ride.
In my opinion, the Levo R addresses the needs of a market like ours, where the vast majority of e-bike riders are not slaying huge features and chunky trails. Rather, riders are looking for power, battery life, and control: boxes that the Levo R ticks with ease.

I’d need more saddle time to dig into the finer details, such as battery range on a big day, and how the bike handles across different terrain. But as a first impression, the Levo R has genuinely shifted my expectations of what a full-power e-MTB can feel like.

Levo 4 is the jack of all trades, master of most all conditions for riders who want to roam far and shred everywhere.
Super Power
SuperNatural Power Delivery
Levo R masters previously impossible climbs, low-speed technical terrain, and high-speed situations with up to 850 watts of peak power and 111 Nm of intuitive, SuperNatural amplification. It is the difference between riding it and eating it. The Turbo 3.1 system amplifies rider input with precision that preserves traction and balance, delivering smooth torque at low cadence, confident control at speed, and the ability to climb steep, loose terrain where others lose traction.
S-Works models: 850 W / 111 Nm. Other models: 810 W / 105 Nm.
Power Is Pointless Without Control
Levo R delivers SuperNatural amplification that intuitively adapts as terrain, cadence, and speed change, allowing riders to fly through previously impossible terrain. Its advanced sensor suite and Turbo 3.1 firmware work together to preserve traction and stability from slow, technical climbs to high-speed riding. Adaptive control regulates support in real time, keeping power connected where other bikes fail.
- Limited Traction Climbing: In controlled testing, the nearest competitor failed to complete a challenging technical climb twice as often as the Levo R because the Turbo 3.1 system delivers power with SuperNatural precision when traction is limited.
- Low-Speed Tech: When cadence and speed drop, Turbo 3.1 adapts current injection in real time, delivering natural amplification exactly when needed. The result is precise control through rock gardens, tight switchbacks, and other technical terrain where intuitive control is critical.
- High-Speed: When cadence and speed rise, Turbo 3.1 adapts current injection to deliver power at the rider’s dead spot to smooth power delivery. The result is calm, controlled support at speed, maintaining stability and confidence when the pace is high.
Super Durability and Efficiency is an Inside Job
Durability, efficiency, and the signature Levo purr come from full-metal gears with HardDrive coating and a decoupled drive side housing. CoreCoat further quiets the motor and keeps it cool.
- CoreCoat winding encapsulation enhances heat dissipation, boosts durability, and ensures ultra-quiet, reliable performance.
- 2X larger, full metal gears are less susceptible to heat expansion, delivering consistent performance throughout the ride.
- HardDrive surface treatment creates an ultra-smooth, hardened finish on gears, ensuring long-lasting, efficient, and quiet operation.
- Motor mechanism is completely decoupled from the driveside housing to minimize structure-borne vibrations for quieter, more refined performance.

Super Frame
Rally-Tuned Chassis
Levo R’s FACT composite frame is purpose-built around Rally performance. The unique 140/130mm chassis shares the Wattage Cottage battery hatch and SWAT storage of Levo 4, while cutting frame weight by 530 grams and sharpening handling characteristics through dedicated 29-inch wheels and Rally geometry.
Rally Geometry
Rally riding favours a low, efficient stance that supports climbing speed and agile descending. Levo R lowers the centre of gravity and positions the rider forward for balance and control. Adjustable geometry includes a three-position head tube, two-position bottom bracket, and chainstay flip chips, allowing riders to tune the bike precisely to terrain and style.

Key geometry numbers (S4, stock settings): Reach: 475mm | Seat Tube Angle: 77° | Head Tube Angle: 65° | Chainstay Length: 447mm | BB Height: 339mm
Adjustable Geometry for Those Who Like to Tune
The Levo R geometry delivers an exceptional ride right out of the box, combining capability with nimble manners in tight sections. Riders who love to fine-tune can easily personalise their geometry:
- Headset Angle: Steep (+1°) / Middle / Slack (-1°) — set the head tube angle steeper for sharper steering or relaxed for greater stability.
- Chainstay: Short (-6mm) / Long — adjust the wheelbase for stability with a longer setting or enhanced manoeuvrability with a shorter one.
- Bottom Bracket: Low / High (+5mm) — adjust to a high position for better clearance or low for stability.
SWAT Downtube Storage
Stash your trailside fix-it kit in the downtube Wattage Cottage. Specialized pioneered internal downtube storage, and now they’re the first to bring it to an e-MTB. Secured above the battery magnetically, the SWAT bag holds trailside essentials like a tube and CO2. Swap in the smaller aftermarket 600Wh battery for extra space for a jacket or other gear.
Details Define Durability
Every pivot, link, and tube was optimised through finite element analysis to balance stiffness, strength, and responsiveness. Like all full-suspension Specialized bikes, Levo R includes a lifetime full suspension replacement bearing policy for the original owner.

Super Agile
Precision Agility
A Roval Traverse SL 29-inch wheelset delivers rapid acceleration and consistent momentum, just like a rally car. 2.4-inch Purgatory tyres balance rolling speed and predictable grip. A Roval Control SL RISE cockpit and carefully selected components maintain low weight and direct steering response. (S-Works specification — see spec grid for model-specific specs.)
Fly Low and Fast, Like a Rally Car
Levo R rewards riders who ride with rhythm and intent. GENIE’s supportive mid-stroke allows riders to maintain flow by working bumps and accelerating out of features, rather than ploughing through them. Optimised chassis stiffness translates rider input directly into forward motion.
Rider Connection Amplified
The SuperNatural Turbo system is defined by natural connection. Engineered to disappear, Levo R responds as an extension of the rider, with support that fades into the background while preserving feel and feedback from the trail.
Super Control
GENIE Suspension, Rally Tuned
The patent-pending GENIE system returns with a Rally-specific tune. The FOX FLOAT GENIE delivers a flat, coil-like spring curve through the first 70 percent of travel, followed by a progressive ramp-up in the final 30 percent. The result is improved traction, consistent support, and controlled bottom-out resistance.
The Proof is in the Wheel Rate
GENIE suspension technology delivers control-enhancing, linear performance of a coil spring in the “bump zone,” paired with a progressive spring curve at the end of the stroke to prevent bottom-outs.
The GENIE FOX FLOAT shock on Levo R delivers more travel compared to a standard FOX FLOAT for the same bump force, ensuring superior control, traction, and a more comfortable ride. Simply put: GENIE rides like a longer-travel bike.
At 842 Newtons of force at the rear wheel, GENIE delivers 17.3% more travel: Levo R with GENIE FOX FLOAT achieves 95mm of travel versus 81mm with a standard FOX FLOAT. At the same time, GENIE requires more force to bottom-out — keeping you in control when the trail gets rough.

Super Range
Go Far. Fast.
Levo R’s modular battery system allows riders to balance weight and range. The stock 840Wh battery powers extended missions. The aftermarket 600Wh battery delivers a lighter, more agile setup. Add the 280Wh Range Extender for rides extending beyond four hours. All batteries meet IP67 water and dust resistance standards.
Configurable Power System
Batteries swap quickly through the Wattage Cottage side hatch. The system automatically recognises battery capacity and adjusts Smart Control and MicroTune parameters accordingly. Configure the system to match the mission, not the other way around.
- 1,120Wh On-Board: ~3.75 hours max range
- 840Wh Battery: ~2.5 hours max range
- 600Wh Battery: ~1.5 hours max range
- 280Wh Range Extender

Max range for Expert Carbon, Comp Carbon, and Comp Alloy models based on Eco mode, 80kg rider, significant elevation gain. S-Works max range is approximately 10% less due to increased energy consumption of the more powerful S-Works 3.1 motor.
Unmatched Range to Weight
Optimised voltage system and gear ratio enable a reduction of current draw and heat loss. Per power used, no one delivers more range and faster charging.
Super Integration
MasterMind T3 — The Big Brain
The 1.78-inch MasterMind T3 display delivers high-resolution clarity with 368 x 448 pixels of customisable, real-time data. Paired with Levo R’s Rally motor tuning and battery options, it functions as a digital co-driver, helping riders manage effort, output, and range.

MicroTune Control
Adjust assist levels in 10 percent increments on the fly. Dynamic MicroTune provides automatic access to full power during hard accelerations, maintaining efficiency while preserving immediate response when needed.
Connected Intelligence
The Specialized App integrates personalisation, diagnostics, and security into a single platform. Riders can track performance, integrate with Strava and Garmin devices, enable Turbo System Lock, locate the bike via Apple Find My, and receive Over-the-Air Updates that refine firmware and introduce new features over time. Levo R is a living system that gets even better over time.
Super Charger
Charge Harder, Wait Less
The standard 5A charger delivers 0–80 percent in 90 minutes. The optional 12A Smart Charger (included with S-Works models) achieves the same in under an hour. Efficient thermal management and battery tuning ensure long-term health without slowing riders down.
