Trek launch Checkmate SLR gravel race bike

Press release supplied by Trek Bikes

By Press Office · 30 comments

In addition to the updated Checkpoint SL which launches today, Trek are expanding their gravel line up to include a gravel race-specific bike, the Checkmate SLR.

Checkmate SLR is their first ever dedicated gravel race bike and fastest and lightest gravel bike yet. It shares DNA with the new Madone Gen 8, and is designed with the same new Full System Foil aero shapes and Aero RSL integrated Bar/Stem as seen on the Madone.

Given the meteoric rise in popularity of gravel racing both locally and globally, and the growing demand for gravel bikes reflected in our Quarterly Review, we expect to see this ripping up Karoo gravel roads in the near future. Get all the details in the full press release below:

Press release

The all-new Checkmate SLR is Trek’s first-ever dedicated gravel race bike and the lightest and fastest gravel bike the brand has ever made, perfect for crushing the sport’s most epic events. It’s designed for gravel riders on the ultimate pursuit of speed – from taking on gravel races like Unbound, to chasing gravel QOMs/KOMs.

Standout Features

– Gravel Race geometry that puts you in a fast and confident riding position
– Ultralight and fast 800 Series OCLV Carbon frame
– 45mm tire clearance (as measured)
– Lightweight and aero one-piece bar/stem
– Full System Foil aero tube shaping

The Checkmate SLR features Trek’s IsoSpeed comfort tech to smooth bumps in the road and keep adventurers riding stronger longer. Plus frame designs and mounts for Trek’s all-new Adventure Bags, including top tube, frame, and the more aero-efficient triangle bag that’s tucked out of the wind.

Trek’s lightest gravel bike ever

Checkmate is Trek’s lightest gravel bike ever, with premium 800 Series OCLV Carbon, top-tier components, and new lightweight tube shape technology that help drop a whole pound off the previous Checkpoint SLR model.

Trek’s fastest gravel bike ever

Checkmate is Trek’s fastest gravel bike ever, with the same new Full System Foil aero tube shapes and aero one-piece bar/stem as Madone Gen 8. Plus, Checkmate’s new Gravel Race geo puts riders in a more aggressive and efficient riding position. Together, these features help make Checkmate 5 minutes and 54 seconds faster than Checkpoint SLR on the 200-mile course at Unbound (at 200W).

New lightweight and aero one-piece bar/stem

Checkmate features the same ultra-light and aero one-piece carbon bar/stem as Madone Gen 8, with hoods that are 3cm narrower than the drops so riders can choose between a more aero or more controlled position and enjoy more ergonomic comfort on the tops.

New Gravel Race Geometry

All-new geo keeps you tucked out of the wind so you can soar past the competition on race day and stay confident and in control on even the gnarliest gravel sections. A lower, shorter position provides a more aggressive fit and faster handling than the previous Checkpoint SLR.

Room for up to 45mm tires (as measured)

Checkmate comes stock with 38mm tires but can fit up to 45mm tires to roll quick over tougher race or training courses.

Customizable in Project One

The best way to get Checkmate is through Project One for the perfect fit, parts, and color. Plus, the new Project One ICON Raw Lithos scheme brings breathtaking earthen hues exclusively to Checkmate customers.

Local Pricing and Availability

Checkmate SLR 7: R185 000
Checkmate SLR 9: R255 000

These will only be available as Project One models. For more information check out trekbikes.com and get in touch with your nearest Trek dealer.

All I took from this is that my 8,9kg gravel bike with cheap wheels, alu bits, double sealant volume and heavy pedals is actually pretty competitive weight wise (always felt heavy after my road bike). Quick calc on swapping cassette (XT > XTR), lighter pedals, bar, seatpost, saddle, and 200g saving on the rims and it'll be under 8kg. Woot. Thanks for making me think about something like this Trek.

its a gravel bike, does weight really matter ? Your average gravel biker will be adding 23 storage bags, be wearing a flannel shirt flapping in the wind  and be stopping to pick up some conditioner for his beard and man bun before heading to the local coffee shop.

No bags, no beard, no flannel shirt, no male to male massages post ride, no coffee stops (tea for the win) and no tattoos.   It's actually hectic they even let me buy a gravel bike.

Hahaha, Seth is literally the REASON I have this bike.   He wore me down after he got his one.🤣

Gotta love these obscenely expensive bikes. Keep em coming Trek/Spesh/?? I'm sure we can break 300k for a road bike real soon.

Am I the only armgat that look at these beautiful bikes and see the eye watering price and thinking what I can buy with that amount of money.

Yesterday we had a meeting between Stellenbosch and Summerset, had some time so we popped into Specialized and BMW. For the price of a mid tier Spaz you had quite a few new bikes to choose from and for the top tier Spaz you could nearly buy a top tier BMW 1000rr that looks like a GP bike.

How do bicycle manufacturers justify those prices and don't come with R&D as there's plenty that goes into the bikes as well.

I wonder how many of these will sell.. you can buy two 10R cruz or diverge for the price of this bike (or even better, one of each). Even the S-works with all the bells and whistles are 20-30k cheaper... and they are expensive bikes already.

And for that price you can only run 45c tyres...

When I see a BMW I think about how many bikes I could buy with that money

I drive cheap cars and ride expensive bikes 😅

One Spaz maybe if you don't splurge out on spec.

I've gotten to the point where my brain just goes "nevermind, next!" when it sees the high prices.
No point in getting excited about it if I can't see myself ever spending that much money on the particular area. R200k+ bike, or car that costs more than my house? Not even interested in reading/watching the review. R150mil mansion in Camps Bay? No, clickbait headline, it is in fact not something that I MUST SEE.
The good condition used Scalpels or Cyphers in the classifieds for less that R40k? Far more interesting

My wife loves "window shopping" on property sites. Likes to send me links to property. I keep telling her, "whats the point, we cant afford it" . But she seems to love it.

Chaps, you clearly only pretend to know about bikes because you insist on looking at the wrong ones. It's pretty obvious that the new alloy Checkpoint is the one Trek made for the price whingers (even if you have to wait 5 years for it show up in the Classifieds). Save R215,000, bargain!

To be fair, the article only mentions the ALR models at the pricing and availability, no other details mentioned ;)

Seriously though - when I first read the article, I saw the price of the ALR4, scrolled back up to see if I had missed something, found nothing and... went on with my day and forgot to go check the Trek website.

The Colnago's and Pinerello's aren't listed locally as they are usually custom built

Pretty sure the one mentioned at R75k is not an ALR model
