Since 2024, we’ve been tracking marketplace data each quarter to spot trends on Bike Hub. During and directly after the Covid-19 pandemic, demand and interest in cycling surged. Activity in the Bike Hub marketplace has since stabilised, and we’re now starting to see clear seasonal patterns and shifts across categories.
Here’s what we found in the third quarter of 2025:
Marketplace Activity Continues to Grow
Enquiries across all categories are up 20.5% year-on-year in Q3 2025 compared with Q3 2024.
Enquiries (responses to ads) are not a direct measure of sales, but we view them as an indicator of demand. We assume that actual sales broadly mirror these trends.

Enquiries by Bicycle Category
Enquiries by Bicycle Category is a useful view for tracking seasonal fluctuations in demand per discipline, and can also be used as a proxy for overall market share per category.
In Q3 2025:
- Road bike share of enquiries rose by 1% with the start of spring.
- Dual suspension mountain bikes slipped by 0.5%.
- Gravel continued its growth trajectory, albeit modestly, up from 6.9% to 7.2%.
- E-bike enquiries increased by 0.5%.
- Triathlon and time trial bikes fell by 0.6% to 2.3% of total enquiries.

Gravel Continues to Climb
Enquiries on Gravel Bikes have jumped 52.7% year-on-year. They’re also up 9.6% on Q2. Gauteng continues to show the greatest growth in interest, while enquiries in the Western Cape have remained steady through 2025.

We suspect road safety concerns and the rapid growth of gravel events are driving this trend.
Dual Suspension Mountain Bikes Scale
Enquiries for dual suspension mountain bikes have surged 49% year-on-year and 7.5% on the previous quarter. This segment has long been the backbone of South African cycling, and this growth is a positive indicator of market health. Gauteng once again leads, accounting for 53% of enquiries.

Road Bikes are Rolling
Road Bike enquiries grew a solid 22.8% year-on-year and 13.9% on the previous quarter. This category shows the clearest seasonal patterns, with a consistent spike in Q1 (New Year’s resolutions? Cape Town Cycle Tour or just summer feels?).
- 25.5% of enquires fall into the R25k–R50k price bracket.
- 60% of enquiries in the sub-R25k price range.

E-Bikes Continue to Power Up

Hardtail Mountain Bikes Hold their Line
Enquiries on Hardtail Mountain Bikes rose 54.5% year-on-year for Q3 and are up 8.8% on Q2.

Over 96% of enquiries are in the under R25k price bracket, confirming that these are largely entry-level purchases. Again a positive indicator for the sport.
Bike Hub Pay
In a new addition to the quarterly reports, we’re taking a closer look at Bike Hub Pay. Our secure payment service has seen accelerating adoption, with Q3 2025 transactions up over 70% year-over-year.
The graph below shows 724 deals were completed in Q3 at a total value of R5.6 million – reflecting growing confidence in escrow-protected marketplace transactions.

Conclusion
The third quarter of 2025 confirms that marketplace activity on Bike Hub is not only steady but accelerating. Enquiries grew across nearly every category, with gravel, e-bikes, and dual suspension mountain bikes driving much of the momentum. Road bikes continue to show predictable seasonal strength, while entry-level hardtails point to a steady inflow of new riders. The marketplace outlook remains positive, despite a tough economic climate, and we look forward to seeing what the final quarter of 2025 holds.
