Incident type:
Scam or Fraud

More about the incident:

Planned to meet the buyer (scammer) at a public location in Houghton. When I arrived he called and said he will send his friend to check that everything is okay. He then said he would make an immediate payment to my account for the full amount. I received an SMS which appeared very legit from ABSA stating that a transfer was made in my account (it was very convincing). I know that immediate payment usually takes about an hour to clear between different banks so I wasn't too concerned and released the bike with accessories. That was very bad judgement on my part! On investigating the SMS later I realised the number where it came from was not the usual long number format of the banks but a regular cell phone number and that was it. Tip: NEVER, EVER accept that payment was done if it doesn't reflect in your bank account and NEVER release items until you are sure that the money is indeed in your account - check your bank balance to verify.
