SRAM introduces 12-speed Eagle drivetrains

By Press Office · 214 comments

SRAM introduced the first ever, purpose built 1x drivetrain, and is the absolute leader in 1x technology and innovation. We have manufactured, tested and ridden hundreds of thousands of SRAM 1x drivetrains, and have capitalized on the lessons learned from our experience to create all new drivetrains with Eagle Technology. Eagle drivetrains provide unparalleled performance, enhanced toughness and durability, and the freedom of a 500 percent gear range.

In 2012, we introduced the world’s first purpose built 1x drivetrain — and it forever changed the way we ride. SRAM 1x changed the way we look at mountain bikes. Gone was the front derailleur, which immediately improved shifting simplicity and performance. It dropped a significant chunk of weight from the bike. It made shifting easier and consistently better for racers hitting the redline and new riders alike. It made mountain biking better for everyone. And it still does. We invented it, we build more 1x drivetrains than anyone else, and we are unrelenting in our commitment to furthering 1x technology.

Introducing SRAM Eagle Technology, our most advanced and highest-performing drivetrains to date. The new XX1 and X01 drivetrains, featuring Eagle Technology, are collections of components that have been engineered for a whole new level of ride quality and integration. These drivetrains have not only been refined, we have torn them apart, built them up, tested, tweaked, engineered and tested again. Eagle Technology delivers a drivetrain that is smoother, simpler, more durable and quieter than anything you’ve ever ridden. Add to that Eagle’s massive gear range, and you have greater freedom to ride how you want, where you want. Performance, durability, simplicity, range, freedom: Introducing Eagle, only from SRAM.

XX1 Eagle

We built the incredible new XX1 Eagle drivetrain to work quietly, intuitively, precisely and perfectly. Whether you’re an hour and twelve minutes into a World Cup XC or, just about to hit the top of Pearl Pass—XX1 Eagle is ready for that and every place in between. This cross-country-optimized drivetrain combines our newest generation of SRAM 1x drivetrain technological advancements with lightweight materials. With a greater gear range of 500-percent, XX1 Eagle gives you smoother, more precise shifts with greater durability for long lasting performance so you can spend more time in the gear you want. XX1 Eagle just rewrote the rules of freedom.

It might look normal from the outside, but the engineering inside this incredible new chain design that makes possible a gear range previously found only in 2-chainring drivetrains. And it’s also the biggest contributor to the Eagle drivetrain’s ultra-smooth, precise, durable and quiet performance. The Eagle chain’s links have a smooth radius, with no sharp edges or chamfers, which yield a significant reduction in noise, friction and wear on chainrings and cassette cogs. This design also allows for a flatter plate, which means more consistent chain riveting and greater overall strength. HARD CHROME technology extends the chain’s optimal performance life, and a Titanium Nitride coating on the Gold and Black models decreases corrosion and further reduces friction.

Eagle Chainring

The radical new look and feel of our X-SYNC 2 Eagle chainring is a direct result of SRAM drivetrain engineers studying the performance and wear characteristics of thousands of X-SYNC chainrings. We subjected every size of chainring to untold environmental and mechanical tortures, abuse and neglect, in both lab and real-world settings, to come up with a chainring that would augment the Eagle drivetrain’s performance in all conditions. The longer, positive-rake tooth shape has been designed to work perfectly with the new Eagle chain to increase chain retention and overall pedaling efficiency, while decreasing friction, noise and wear.

  • Cassette – $360 | €392 | £302

Yes, it's expensive. But it's the same price (almost) as the current X01 / XX1 cassettes, and it's their top of the line option. It was never going to be cheap, with the amount of machining that goes into it.

If you want a cheaper one, wait until the GX level one comes out, or just go for the 11speed e-13 cassette (9-44) at $309.

It's clear that you're a hater, and you don't understand the reasoning behind it...

Ok so how long before the RD touches the ground when you are in granny? 56? 58? Also, any views on the correlation between chain length and chain failure / wear?

Call me old fashioned, but I'll take my dinner plate on the front right next to my side plate opposed to on the back for now.

At the moment, the cage is the same length as the current xx1 & x01 & x1 & gx1 stuff, which means it goes no closer to the ground than current iterations, due to the way that the RD moves sideways, not diagonally. It stays in the same horizontal plane, with the upper jockey wheel moving in & rearward as you shift gears. X-Horizon, they call it.

The only change in the RD is that hte upper jockey is slightly more offset (rearwards) so that it can clear the 50t without having to extend the b-screw too much.

Myles you miight have missed when I said this:

"I like the idea of simplicity and less clutter on the bike, but at the end of the day it needs to be practical and comfortable to ride with"

I'll add that by practical includes affordable, having to wait for the trickle down to more affordable sram ranges is not cricket either.... And can u imagine how heavy that more affordable version will be if the top of the range weighs 355g

Price and a 8 tooth jump to a 50T cog don't make it practical to me. XTR used to be the benchmark for expensive mtb componentry but srams 11 and now 12 T cassettes have made xtr almost affordable in comparison.

Price and weight from chain reaction cycles:

XTR 11-34 or 11-36 = $138 (RRP $249)

On special

X01 10-42 = $251 (RRP = $450)

XX1 10-42 = $268 (RRP = $498)

Eagle10-50 = $360 to $420

Until I get a chance to try it I won't hate it, maybe I like it..... But I'm not falling for the marketing (500% range) or going fall asleep dreaming about it

Each to their own.

You either need it / want it based on the type of riding you do and can afford it or not. Regrettably with our exchange rate new product lines from overseas are getting pricy.

As to me my Enduro / trail bike will remain 1 X 11 XO and my fully ridged carbon 29er will stay 2 X 10 because I need not only the range but the smaller jumps as I use this bike as a road bike.

I do have plans on getting a short travel dual sys for riding such as the Dirtopia 100 miler on I recon that bike will warrant Eagle.

Remember to enjoy the ride.

I am quite happy on my 34t upfront and haven't found a hill I couldn't ride yet. Obviously if I am going to do an epic I might go down to a 32t to save the legs a bit.

My question is this:

Will Shimano react and also go that route, after doing so much for riders with the M8000 11speed series?

Or will they do what any sane industry would do and invest in creating an economy of scale, allowing a trickle down to SLX level 11 speed drivetrains?

Cannot wait for Shimano to go 1 x 12.  On the Di2, it is a simple software upgrade with new cluster and chain.  Bring it on, apparently soon, soon...

that's another reason I like the potential of going electronic. No more pull ratios, no more cables. Just a simple upgrade of software and the cassette / chain. FAR more cost effective.

EDIT: If only it were cheaper.

On that particular note, what anyone else chooses to do with their Rondt or Dollar, or what have you, is entirely up to them.

And, I want to paint his yoohoo gooooooold...

problem is that if the big spenders go large and always accept the spiraling costs as "acceptable" it just screws over the rest of us poor plebs who cringe at the price of a simple tube or entry level deore 10spd cassette (R790.00 BTW for a deore cassette with the updated pricing from shimano) ....... things are getting to a point where I am thinking to sell all the bikes and build up a rough and rugged do-it-all hardtail running (think Hungry Monkey or On-One 456 650b frame) as a SS with the option of using gears on occasion if the need arises.

i think the fact that Shimano is still doing the 2x drive-trains is that they don't need to react.

They also have the electronic shifting...

don't forget Shimano 2x11 won the cape epic... :whistling:
