SRAM introduces 12-speed Eagle drivetrains

By Press Office · 214 comments

SRAM introduced the first ever, purpose built 1x drivetrain, and is the absolute leader in 1x technology and innovation. We have manufactured, tested and ridden hundreds of thousands of SRAM 1x drivetrains, and have capitalized on the lessons learned from our experience to create all new drivetrains with Eagle Technology. Eagle drivetrains provide unparalleled performance, enhanced toughness and durability, and the freedom of a 500 percent gear range.

In 2012, we introduced the world’s first purpose built 1x drivetrain — and it forever changed the way we ride. SRAM 1x changed the way we look at mountain bikes. Gone was the front derailleur, which immediately improved shifting simplicity and performance. It dropped a significant chunk of weight from the bike. It made shifting easier and consistently better for racers hitting the redline and new riders alike. It made mountain biking better for everyone. And it still does. We invented it, we build more 1x drivetrains than anyone else, and we are unrelenting in our commitment to furthering 1x technology.

Introducing SRAM Eagle Technology, our most advanced and highest-performing drivetrains to date. The new XX1 and X01 drivetrains, featuring Eagle Technology, are collections of components that have been engineered for a whole new level of ride quality and integration. These drivetrains have not only been refined, we have torn them apart, built them up, tested, tweaked, engineered and tested again. Eagle Technology delivers a drivetrain that is smoother, simpler, more durable and quieter than anything you’ve ever ridden. Add to that Eagle’s massive gear range, and you have greater freedom to ride how you want, where you want. Performance, durability, simplicity, range, freedom: Introducing Eagle, only from SRAM.

XX1 Eagle

We built the incredible new XX1 Eagle drivetrain to work quietly, intuitively, precisely and perfectly. Whether you’re an hour and twelve minutes into a World Cup XC or, just about to hit the top of Pearl Pass—XX1 Eagle is ready for that and every place in between. This cross-country-optimized drivetrain combines our newest generation of SRAM 1x drivetrain technological advancements with lightweight materials. With a greater gear range of 500-percent, XX1 Eagle gives you smoother, more precise shifts with greater durability for long lasting performance so you can spend more time in the gear you want. XX1 Eagle just rewrote the rules of freedom.

It might look normal from the outside, but the engineering inside this incredible new chain design that makes possible a gear range previously found only in 2-chainring drivetrains. And it’s also the biggest contributor to the Eagle drivetrain’s ultra-smooth, precise, durable and quiet performance. The Eagle chain’s links have a smooth radius, with no sharp edges or chamfers, which yield a significant reduction in noise, friction and wear on chainrings and cassette cogs. This design also allows for a flatter plate, which means more consistent chain riveting and greater overall strength. HARD CHROME technology extends the chain’s optimal performance life, and a Titanium Nitride coating on the Gold and Black models decreases corrosion and further reduces friction.

Eagle Chainring

The radical new look and feel of our X-SYNC 2 Eagle chainring is a direct result of SRAM drivetrain engineers studying the performance and wear characteristics of thousands of X-SYNC chainrings. We subjected every size of chainring to untold environmental and mechanical tortures, abuse and neglect, in both lab and real-world settings, to come up with a chainring that would augment the Eagle drivetrain’s performance in all conditions. The longer, positive-rake tooth shape has been designed to work perfectly with the new Eagle chain to increase chain retention and overall pedaling efficiency, while decreasing friction, noise and wear.

Also top speeds are a lot higher in road racing so the range with small incremental steps is necessary similar to cars. Faster you go the harder it is to go faster so the gear spacing needs to reduce to keep the engine in the power band

Btw in TT man riders use a single chainring when the course gradient is not dramatic

Yip, I was on the round ring for a good 4500 km before going oval. The big differene I have noticed is the traction when climbing. the power delivery is a lot smoother so you have much more grip and control.

As for it behaving like a 32T on climbs and 36T on flats as claimed, that is very difficult to say. I usually ride to the point where my legs burn. Saying that I have had quite a lot of PR's since going oval, but I have been doing big mileage as well. To just give credit to the oval ring is not an accurate statement so cant really say if it made me faster or not...

When I ran rotor q rings on a triple many years ago I found the traction was improved in only the middle ring. If I set it up for performance in the large ring the bike bobbed terribly in the middle and granny . With a single up front I'll buy into your improved traction .

To over come this problem I refitted the round outer and granny and only kept the q ring middle ring.

Why dont they ride tge TdF on 1x gruppos, if it offers such a big advantage?

Cause usually road bikes are better for that race.

I wonder if they are going to update the 11 speed chains as well or if the new design 1X rings will just work with the standard 11s chain?

This is awesome. Expensive, but awesome. Simplicity of 1x, but with full range. That lever better last through all the quick changes though, and more than one downshift at a time would be nice.

With grip-shift you can run through plenty gears.

Must say that the one thing I prefer on my 2x10 MTB over my 1x11 MTB is the ability to get a big gearing change with one click of the front shifter. This seems to come in handy when a surprise hill jumps out you.

Yip. Plenty of surprise hills out there too! If they're not too long, I prefer to push one full lever through all the clicks and push the climb. 4 clicks on 1x11 is ok. On 1x12, 5 may be better....

But it is a lot easier on your drive train to drop a chainring than to try and crunch 3 or 4 gears higher on the cassette when under load.

I mean to shift from a big chainring to a small chainring in 1 shot while under load is a lot quicker than trying to shift up the cassette while pedaling hard on a sudden unexpected incline.

and the chance of dropping or snapping a chain in said instance is also markedly higher...

"Pro's won't use it, the 50t is just for weenies who can't climb"

Say hello to Jerome Clementz, and his 38t front ring and Eagle cassette.

EDIT: You can also see that he's used that 50t a fair bit.

So the gold "bling" is optional?

Actually looks like everything is normal 11x stuff and only using the cassette.

Edit. Autocorrect issue

I have in fact broken a chain when suddenly changing to an easier gear at the back when hitting a sudden unexpected incline but have never had any trouble changing down at the front in a similar situation.

I guess the thing is to find what works for you and what you like riding and then go with it.

For me I love my triple chainset thanks. [emoji4]

Gold one is XX1 Eagle, black is X01

Erm, no. Everything is Eagle. Definitely all Eagle. Look at the red cage inner, and the larger lower pully, as well as the new chainring. That's definitely the new one. Also, the recessed cage-lock and the hex-head clutch adjustment thing is a dead giveaway.

And as I said dropping the chain and having zero drive has a higher probability hence 1x.

with 1x11 and gripshift I can use the whole range of the cassette very quickly.

And lastly, Even whenI used flippy shifters and rapid rise, I didn't have problems with "surprise hills".

I did have problems with dropped  and jammed chains (between chain stay and chainring) and since I've engineered Shimano FD to work with SRAM shifters reliably, even with systems designed to work together dropped chains are just a reality on a full suspension MTB in the heat of battle.

Hence......1x

bye bye dropped chains,

no more broken chains

My team mate broke a chain during a stage race. Yip 2x system. Never seen a rider break a chain with 1x

both XX1 & X01 are Eagle. Eagle is their name for 12sp systems. XX1 is Gold themed, X01 is red. So it looks as if Jerome is running solid X01 Eagle.

Yes Jeroe is running XO1 Eagle because its more focussed toward AM and Enduro due to the tougher crank

I'll go sit in my (Shimano) corner and be quiet now, properly "schooled". :-)

That dinner plate looks ridiculous, I wonder how much it costs?
