SRAM eTap awaiting certification for use in South Africa

By Press Office · 39 comments

Cape Cycle Systems (Cape Town) is the Sole Authorized importer of SRAM Components into the South African cycling aftermarket industry.

South Africa has been earmarked by SRAM International as an approved country to receive the SRAM eTap product range.

However due to the nature of the product, SRAM eTap needs to be awarded Certification for use in SA by the relevant South African Government Body.

Such application has been made by SRAM but as yet the Certification has not been awarded.

What this means is that it is currently UNLAWFUL to use SRAM eTap in South Africa irrespective of its source. We will advise when this changes!

Cape Cycle Systems is therefore in NO position to entertain any supply, service or warranty requests or claims that any individual or organization may make to us. Such persons or parties will be directed back to their source of SRAM eTap procurement.

Good day

I can unfortunately not say where in the queue it is, but it has only been submitted on 2016-06-22 and our turnaround time, as stated in the LOA procedure, is ± 120 days.

Interesting.

My bother with this is that Cape cycle systems (rep) first said they will have stock in Jan 2016 (This was December).  If the application was done then, 120 days.......

Then the promise to my bike shop was May......(This was in February)....if the application was done then......120 days...

So someone dragged feet.  And I am guessing it is not ICASA......but they get blamed.

Interesting.

There are two sides to it, to be fair to icasa they have to certify everything from cordless phones wireless panic buttons, so they have a ton of devices to get through.

The other side is that its a bit ridiculous that they re-certify everything, each of those devices has already gone through FCC approval in terms of interference etc so they are just really making money and wasting people's time.

Icasa should stick to what they are already bad at doing and try to improve that, i.e cellular certification, spectrum allocation and carrier grade equipment.

..........And then something goes wrong and you guys blame ICASA for not checking everything. Different countries have differing conditions, priorities etc

All this hassle and we have not even got to the fact you cannot shift rear and front mech at the same time :P

I rode with this groupset in Europe end July and it was awesome.

South Africa don't recognise FCC as we fall under the EMEA region. To get something type approved with ICASA you would need the CE certificates which are the European standards and checks. If you submit a item to ICASA with FCC approval certificates you are going to wait a hell of a long time and more than likely you will have to submit extra paperwork.

I see the ICASA strike is finally over. Maybe they can get this issue sorted by the weekend?

Based on comment from pilots trying to get radio licence renewals, ICASA are properly useless in keeping with SA ANC government tradition.
