Here at Bike Hub we love nothing better than the value offering that comes with trickle-down technology, and so jumped at the opportunity to get up close and personal with the latest mid-range helmet offering from Specialized: the Propero 4.

Featuring the aero advantages of the S-Works Evade 3 together with the ventilation of the S-Works Prevail 3, and retailing for an MSRP of R3600, the Propero 4 ticks all the boxes for someone on the hunt for a fast, good-looking helmet at a mid-range price point. Here are our first impressions:
At first glance
Out of the box, the helmet looks and feels the part. The aesthetic is exactly what is says on the box: Evade 3 meets Prevail 3. Think clean lines, a low profile and a neat finish.
Everything from the full wrap polycarbonate shell finish, to the lightweight webbing, MIPS integration and the fit system is in line with what I’d expect from a premium helmet.

Safety
We tend to forget that the point of a helmet is ultimately protection, and often safety is the first feature to slip off the list as the retail price drops. Not so in this case. The Propero 4 earned a 5-Star Virginia Tech® Helmet Rating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and is fully kitted with the MIPS Evolve Core system which helps divert rotational motion from the head in during angled impacts: reducing the risk of concussion. The system is comfortable and well-ventilated, and does provide some peace of mind.

On the move
For me the mark of a good helmet is that you don’t notice it is there. It should feel weightless on your head, fit snugly without cutting off circulation, and not move, jiggle or flap at speed. The Propero 4 hits the nail on the head: it’s light, neat and comfortable, and absorbed a few messy runs down G-Spot with aplomb. Finally: sunglasses storage, and an intuitive adjustment system mean that all the small details have been taken care of.

Introducing the All-New Propero 4
We are very proud to unveil the all-new Propero 4—a helmet that’s designed to bring the aero advantages of the S-Works Evade 3 together with the ventilation of S-Works Prevail 3, and it does it all with the comfort and confidence Specialized helmets are famous for, earning the highest 5-Star Virginia Tech® helmet rating from internationally renowned Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Every detail of the Propero 4 was created with our equation for speed in mind. Aerodynamics + Ventilation + Lightweight = Fast. We set out to ensure this high-performance race helmet performs in every one of these categories, yet ensure it remains accessible performance for more riders—from new racers to veteran KOM/QOM collectors.

Aerodynamics & Ventilation
The Propero 4 takes its DNA from our world-renowned S-Works Evade 3 and S-Works Prevail 3. These two iconic helmets grace the heads of cycling legends like World Champion Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering, Remco Evenepoel, and Primož Roglič. Now, we’re making the dream of racing like the pros a reality with the Propero 4—taking the technologies that deliver epic victories and making them available to any rider who wants to experience breathtaking speed.
Aerodynamics + Ventilation + Lightweight = Speed
We first started with aerodynamics. We drew inspiration from the leading edge of the S-Works Evade 3 and pulled this aerodynamic engineering directly into the Propero 4. Then came ventilation, because we know a helmet needs to be more than just aerodynamic to be truly fast in all conditions. We took key learnings from the S-Works Prevail 3 and utilized Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to design rear-end vents that promote increased airflow and boost cooling capacity. The result? A well-balanced helmet that gives riders the best of both worlds—speed and ventilation. Then to top it off, we made this helmet lightweight at 290g (Medium, CE).

Aerodynamics
Aerodynamics is a key component of creating a fast helmet, so we took full advantage of CFD and our Win Tunnel next door to test and shape the Propero 4. First, we ran full CFD tests on multiple shapes to learn how we could optimize aerodynamics and ventilation. Then, we took our two highest-performing shapes from CFD testing and brought them into the Win Tunnel for validation to confirm which shape reigns supreme.
To test the Propero 4 against our S-Works Prevail 3 in the Win Tunnel, we placed our male road race mannequin, molded from 3D scans of Specialized riders, in a stationary set-up. From there, we ran a range of different yaw angles (wind angles) to capture the range a cyclist is likely to experience. Next, we feed the drag at each wind angle into our simulations to show how the helmet performs over realistic wind conditions on the road.
Our time in the Win Tunnel validated the Propero 4 is four watts faster than our S-Works Prevail 3, that adds up to 15 seconds faster over 40km, at an average speed of 45 kph.
Ventilation
Drawing inspiration from our world-renowned S-Works Prevail 3, ventilation was a focal point in our quest for a well-balanced helmet. Although the Prevail 3 boasts a unique design, we couldn’t ignore its effective rear vent layout, which we incorporated into the Propero 4. We utilized CFD insights derived from both the S-Works Prevail 3 and S-Works Evade 3, and leveraged these learnings to amplify the cooling efficiency of the Propero 4, resulting in a helmet that breathes in more ways than one.
In addition to pulling design language from S-Works Prevail 3, we developed a new way of increasing air flow, making its debut in the Propero 4: Micro Channeling. We introduced small 2mm offset micro-channels that create turbulence in the airflow throughout the helmet to help create a continuous, refreshing flow of air. Micro Channeling takes inspiration from a tumble dryer —just as your clothes spin around, ensuring every fiber gets fully dry, Micro Channeling ensures that all the air within your helmet is working to constantly pull in cool air and expel hot air, creating a cooler ride.
