Dirtopia Enduro series kicks off at Delvera

By Press Office · 80 comments

In 2016 five events of this mountain bike discipline are planned in the Western Cape, and on Sunday 3rd of April, the home of Dirtopia trails near Stellenbosch at Delvera will be the host.

The Enduro events are geared for mountain bikers that enjoy singletrack and are fit enough to ride uphills, but more importantly like riding downhills fast! Therefore more adrenalin junkies like downhillers enjoy this discipline of the sport but the lady participation is growing and more young riders are taking part too. Anyone can try this discipline and course designer, Meurant Botha loves taking part himself!

Riders are only timed on certain stages, which are mostly downhill singletrack. The routes are not that technical, but when done at fast speeds, do get tricky… There are normally on average four special stages in a day of the event, and riders go to the start of the next stage in ‘neutral’ or ‘liaison’ sections. This creates a social atmosphere and gatherings at the refreshment station, as no-one are in a hurry.

The Delvera trails are more than 10 years old and routes are being improved by the trail team especially for the event. First stage will start at the top of Klapmutskop with 360 views of Table Mountain & the winelands. Although there are prizes for the top males & females and medals for all, the event is about pure mountain bike riding. Dirtopia has organised eleven Enduro events since 2012.
Pre-entries only are taken, so visit www.dirtopia.co.za to enter online.

The total distances do not matter, as the anaerobic exercise you get is enough to tire the fittest of riders. Timing is done with Amarider Trail Tags and times are immediately live on raceday.

Fees start at R275 per rider and you can call the Trail Centre at 0218844752 for any queries or mail info@dirtopia.co.za. The other Enduro events planned for 2016 are scheduled at various venues from Wellington to Simonsberg.

dude. Come along for the jol. It's a lekker set of trails, those, and a great day out. Even if just on a hardtail or XC bike. As long as you have fun!

BTW - first "race" I would have been in in a little under 2 years. In that time, I've gained 10kg, lost a lot of pace but mostly just am entering for the feck of it. Couldn't care about my place.

I'll have to decide on the eleventh hour.

If I rock up. You'll have to battle me for last place.

Not too much time left for that. As far as I know it's pre-entry only and they close tomorrow.

Just do it.

This will be my first enduro and really can't wait. I've done a handful of xc events and although those were fun and all I always knew that I much prefer the downhill stuff to the "sitting on the saddle spinning for 3 hours" stuff. Bring it!

I have entered. I recon the trails will be great after the rain.

pretty amped myself.been looking forward to this season's racing for what feels like forever.

Anyone know if WPGE will be running a series as well? I'm hoping the season is chockfull of events.

Ya, me too. I believe the WPGE races start a bit later in the year.

Only downside is the spiraling cost of entries and bike parts  to keep our machines running. Think the last Dirtopia event I did last year was R250, not R300.

I have just entered. My 1st enduro race! Pretty excited. I haven't ridden delvera in years, is it acceptable to go for a chilled cruise on the trails on Friday afternoon, is is that a no no in enduro circles?

There isnt any rule against it and besides, Meurant usually tapes the route differently to the standard trails if memory serves...

Btw, I think everyone at the Enduro should wear a nametag with their BikeHub name on. It'd be like everyone knows each other

I'm definitely psyched about the season. Apparently he's cutting a new first stage so hopefully he does away with the old short rocky stage, it is just a little too short to use.

I think that a reccy mission is required if u wanna push it on the day, I was out there a week ago and it was riding great. I may make a mission out that way on friday afternoon.

Possible to Spectate?

Keen to get into enduro, so would be nice to check it out.  Have broken ribs at the moment, so cannot ride. :(

Yes! Amped. Going to be fun and the rain should at least have settled the dust. First race with my new bike. Hope I do not embarrass it.

Amped for the season... which is taking a bit long to get going.

Definitely not liking the price tag for each event.

Yeah the price has become a bit of an issue, it's double what I paid to race in kzn last year.

Come on dirtopia, drop your prices a bit.

At this pricing we going to have to get picky with events to attend when wpge release their dates, which is bad for both parties.

I hate to see what next year brings...... we may start seeing more private races popping up.

I think 150 for each event is fair.. that way all the enduros can be done...

I am already considering which races I should do... helderberg and contermans is a definite.

Swak to think this way...

Yeah look, organisers need to eat and pay the bills and everything got more expensive for them as well, so I certainly don't begrudge them their increase.

I just literally can't afford to do all 5 Dirtopia races and then the 4 or 5 WPGE races in a year.  That's basically R3k to race, which I now realise doesn't even get you into a stage race, so I suppose still bang for buck.  However, good value doesn't always mean affordable.

I'll probably only be doing the Welvanpas enduro this year.  It's too good to not to.
