Dirtopia Enduro series kicks off at Delvera

By Press Office · 80 comments

In 2016 five events of this mountain bike discipline are planned in the Western Cape, and on Sunday 3rd of April, the home of Dirtopia trails near Stellenbosch at Delvera will be the host.

The Enduro events are geared for mountain bikers that enjoy singletrack and are fit enough to ride uphills, but more importantly like riding downhills fast! Therefore more adrenalin junkies like downhillers enjoy this discipline of the sport but the lady participation is growing and more young riders are taking part too. Anyone can try this discipline and course designer, Meurant Botha loves taking part himself!

Riders are only timed on certain stages, which are mostly downhill singletrack. The routes are not that technical, but when done at fast speeds, do get tricky… There are normally on average four special stages in a day of the event, and riders go to the start of the next stage in ‘neutral’ or ‘liaison’ sections. This creates a social atmosphere and gatherings at the refreshment station, as no-one are in a hurry.

The Delvera trails are more than 10 years old and routes are being improved by the trail team especially for the event. First stage will start at the top of Klapmutskop with 360 views of Table Mountain & the winelands. Although there are prizes for the top males & females and medals for all, the event is about pure mountain bike riding. Dirtopia has organised eleven Enduro events since 2012.
Pre-entries only are taken, so visit www.dirtopia.co.za to enter online.

The total distances do not matter, as the anaerobic exercise you get is enough to tire the fittest of riders. Timing is done with Amarider Trail Tags and times are immediately live on raceday.

Fees start at R275 per rider and you can call the Trail Centre at 0218844752 for any queries or mail info@dirtopia.co.za. The other Enduro events planned for 2016 are scheduled at various venues from Wellington to Simonsberg.

Yeah look, organisers need to eat and pay the bills and everything got more expensive for them as well, so I certainly don't begrudge them their increase.

I just literally can't afford to do all 5 Dirtopia races and then the 4 or 5 WPGE races in a year.  That's basically R3k to race, which I now realise doesn't even get you into a stage race, so I suppose still bang for buck.  However, good value doesn't always mean affordable.

I'll probably only be doing the Welvanpas enduro this year.  It's too good to not to.

Just as a matter of interest Nico. You can ride Welvanpas for R50 or free if you are a TBMC member, so why pay R350 to ride it?

Also entered for the hell of it. My rear shock isn't working so well, so hope to at least finish 2nd form last place seeing as there are so many gunning for last position.

Racing is still the most fun you can have with your clothes on.  It's a huge group ride with some bragging rights thrown in.  And Meurant usually opens some otherwise closed trails for his races.

Btw, I think everyone at the Enduro should wear a nametag with their BikeHub name on. It'd be like everyone knows each other

I'll probably have a Bike Hub t-shirt on should anyone want to say hello.

I'll be on my 26er Spaz Enduro - havent decided on the outfit yet :-)

I think organizing these races costs time and money so we can't begrudge the organizers their due but maybe a 20% increase is a bit steep. Once you factor petrol into the equation it becomes an expensive day or weekend out.

So p-ed off, planned on entering yesterday (first had to make sure that I was going to be in town) and then all hell broke loose at work - totally forgot.

Will have to play on my own and wait for next round

I'll probably be covered in dust and blood should anyone want to give a hand.

Possible to Spectate?

Keen to get into enduro, so would be nice to check it out. Have broken ribs at the moment, so cannot ride. :(

As I won't be able to enter I would also like to know about spectating this event.

Just rock up at Delvera and take a hike. You may find it quite tiring trapping around the mountain so not a good idea if you are sick or injured...

+1 - Also keen to come check this out. Don't have a bike at the moment...it's at the bike shop :-(

Even willing to roll up sleeves and help.

Well that was ****ING AWESOME!!! I am dead, my legs suffered hugely on the climbs and protested savagely when I tried to pedal on stage 5, but I hit my goal of passing someone (stage 3 - my favourite of the lot) but then had a stick wedge in my chain, which meant I had to stop and fix it.

All in all, a FANTASTIC day, with Martin Zietsman taking the win overall.

Definitely need more fitness.

Yeah, my (un)fitness levels killed me as well but that's not the organiser's fault. Was a great event and a nice way of giving the enduro scene a bash and I too hit my goal...of not being in the bottom 10 :-)

Neither was I, despite wanting to challenge for the final reverse-podium position!

Legs were DEAD at stage 4 though. yaaaassis.

Was a real good event, enjoyed it immensely.

Was great passing the refreshment station twice for some well needed energy.

I had a really good time on the bike today.

I was a bit disorganised and neglected to bring my usual spares. Two kind riders saved my day after the first stage by giving me a tube and lending me some levers. If you read Bike Hub, thank you again!

that'll teach you for not running tubeless! :)

More to the point though. Tubeless Conversion Packs need to be catered for on test bikes. Can't have tubes!

Lol, I get looked at very strangely in the start shutes of the USN cup races with my flat pedals, baggies, and 160mm travel trail bike [emoji2]

Works great to keep the fitness levels in check.

Nils second overall on his Mercer steel hardtail.

He must be the most authentic bike phenomenon in South Africa. Riding ability on all calibre of bikes. Build ability. His entire, obsessive approach. Top chap.

Few mates in the top ten. Toppies can ride. Appearances can be deceptive.

Mr Botha's humour at the prize giving was excellent and on cue.

Thoroughly enjoyed today thanks to the organisers. And yes some older toppies can ride. Yoh

Yeah, Nils can certainly ride. And as Meurant said. Thank god he wasn't on a nine. Otherwise he'd have had to change the course again.

The ou bokke are damn fast, but also have the time to ride tho. No more kids. Executive positions. Etc.
