Contego Segment Hunter #3: The battle for Cape Cobra

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 99 comments

The third instalment of Contego Segment Hunter at Hoogekraal’s Cape Cobra turned out to be a fiercely contested battle.

Shortly after announcing the segment, Darryn Stow’s title was snatched by Die Muishond. Darryn went back to rectify things but that KOM fell a few hours later when Tiaan Jordaan raised the bar with an outstanding effort setting a new mark of 9:13. This put our challenger, Nils Hansen, under some serious pressure to perform, forcing him to employ some drastic measures.

Tiaan wins with South Industries

The team at South Industries were super impressed with Tiaan’s KOM claiming efforts on Cape Cobra. Through some light Strava stalking they noticed that Tiaan had recently broken a rim. South Industries jumped into action.

How do I ride this segment?

Hoogekraal Cape Cobra (Down & Up) is on the Hoogekraal farm just off Vissershok Road in Durbanville and is part of the larger Tygerberg MTB Club trail network.

Hey DirtyDan

Thanks for that vote of confidence, Big up to you!!!

If you ever feel the need that I need to prove myself just let me know.

Its such a shame that whenever any person is excelling in a achievement there is always people who doubt others abilities. Ive been putting in the hours, have a look at strava all my training is public, but guess its easier to accuse somebody than rather to investigate first.

I dont know whether its insecurity, jealousy or just small man syndrome but I do hope my word is good enough, think i could get a vote of confidence there?

Its such a good gesture form the guys at Contego, BikeHub, South Industries to give us the opportunity to go out and have fun lets not kill the dream from the  bonds we develop through this great sport cycling.

Hey Mr Jordaan

I'm sorry if you feel as though I'm belittling your seriously impressive achievement. As hard as I may try, I doubt I could get a time close to yours on The Cobra (I'm being sincere here by the way).

As with most threads on the Hub, my 2 cents of 'jealousy' was really intended as tongue-in-cheek. Perhaps you're struggling with a little 'insecurity'? Surely not, considering the formidable riding stats you're laying down (I'm not being facetious here).

Could it possibly be some 'roid rage going on? Should your offensive outburst concern us, Mr Jordaan?

Just dicking around dude. Go take some stimulants or something :P

I reckon I'll go out this weekend and try and break into the top 50. Currently sitting at 137 with 12.53. Need to crack 12 min. Take it easy going down and balls to the wall on the uphill.

Don't worry Tiaan, your KOM is safe.

I need to up my game, and stop resting at the bottom... LOL. Sitting at 20m25.

Always just taking it easy there cos I'm *** tired and unfit.

To get to the top 1,000 overall I need to drop 4 minutes. And if I do that, then I'll be top 50 in the "people over 95kg" bracket.

Bring it.

That will probably require as much effort as Tiaan needs to get sub 9.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You're right! 24kg loss will get me to 82. And at that weight, with current strength, that should be a piece of piss.

As a comparison, how about you ride it with 30kg strapped to your back? :P

Suspect you'll still beat me, but hey...

Anyhoo, as an aside, is there a "control" in this series ie Strava is renowned for variances from device to device and sometimes it's just full of crap. Interested to know how that is levelled to ensure a fair outcome or avoid disputes when there's a second in it in future.

And please, before I'm accused of belittling people or detracting from penis contests, this is an agenda-free query.

No idea TBH. It's the closest thing we have at the moment until the device accuracy is sorta normalised.

Agreed on the Strava variances. Sometimes I've absolutely bombed a segment and my time has been way slower than another ride when I wasn't trying particularly hard. But, it's all a bit of fun - nothing serious about Strava

yep. Also, the multitude of repeat / duplicate segments out there means it's a bit of a crapshoot...

I ride the segment twice this weekend. I have to manually upload my older Garmin so I use my phone to check the ride. This segment, both times, was 45s faster on my Garmin. It looks correct according to the map of the segment. My phone seems to have a wider GPS signal and picks up and extra distance at the top for some reason. Very odd.

Edit: but most segments were within a second or two. Think it's mostly a problem of short and/or switchback segments.

We've made some changes to the XC loop on Paarl mountain which at one spot added about 100m to the previous relevant segment.  Cannot for the life of me get Strava to recognize it as a new distinct segment, so no way you'll beat the old times on that.

Then of course "Needles" on Paarl is right next to the shuttle route so current KOM is nearly 80kph.  E-bike or not, you're not beating a bakkie :/
