Contego Segment Hunter #3: The battle for Cape Cobra

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 99 comments

The third instalment of Contego Segment Hunter at Hoogekraal’s Cape Cobra turned out to be a fiercely contested battle.

Shortly after announcing the segment, Darryn Stow’s title was snatched by Die Muishond. Darryn went back to rectify things but that KOM fell a few hours later when Tiaan Jordaan raised the bar with an outstanding effort setting a new mark of 9:13. This put our challenger, Nils Hansen, under some serious pressure to perform, forcing him to employ some drastic measures.

Tiaan wins with South Industries

The team at South Industries were super impressed with Tiaan’s KOM claiming efforts on Cape Cobra. Through some light Strava stalking they noticed that Tiaan had recently broken a rim. South Industries jumped into action.

How do I ride this segment?

Hoogekraal Cape Cobra (Down & Up) is on the Hoogekraal farm just off Vissershok Road in Durbanville and is part of the larger Tygerberg MTB Club trail network.

There are two options available: 1) place cash into the honesty box or 2) pay using the Snapscan app on your phone. The current permit fee is R40 per rider.

More information is available on the Tygerberg MTB Club website here.

I ride the segment twice this weekend. I have to manually upload my older Garmin so I use my phone to check the ride. This segment, both times, was 45s faster on my Garmin. It looks correct according to the map of the segment. My phone seems to have a wider GPS signal and picks up and extra distance at the top for some reason. Very odd.

Yup, Strava added 800m distance and 150m climbing to my ride in Jonkers this weekend compared to my on bike GPS.

Not that I'm complaining...

We've made some changes to the XC loop on Paarl mountain which at one spot added about 100m to the previous relevant segment.  Cannot for the life of me get Strava to recognize it as a new distinct segment, so no way you'll beat the old times on that.

Then of course "Needles" on Paarl is right next to the shuttle route so current KOM is nearly 80kph.  E-bike or not, you're not beating a bakkie :/

LOL. I reckon we're gonna have the same problem when tokai reopens. New lines, shorter lines, longer lines..

I think there has to be variance of more than 50% or something in order for it to be recognised, but it is a problem that I wish the developers would recognise and somehow "close" a segment if a trail centre tells them it's an old unused trail or something.

Maybe they will?  Has anyone ever tried to get a segment removed?

WRT to devices, a phone picks up way fewer gps points per second than a proper gps device. Good gps devices you can also calibrate to say how accurate you want it, ie low accuracy lets the battery last longer. The way phones work it looks like one of those connect-the-dots pictures but proper device is actually very accurate.

WRT segment hunter we do use a GPS device.

Nils Hansen. He's so hot right now (for those old enough to have seen the original Zoolander)

Coolest individual in South African cycling. Top bloke.

His infatuation with bikes is so natural and effortless, comes across with vivid authenticity on this edit.

Anyhoo, as an aside, is there a "control" in this series ie Strava is renowned for variances from device to device and sometimes it's just full of crap. Interested to know how that is levelled to ensure a fair outcome or avoid disputes when there's a second in it in future.

And please, before I'm accused of belittling people or detracting from penis contests, this is an agenda-free query.

I agree. On this very segment - the DH version, I have had some fast runs that have come nowhere on the good old Strava - last time out I rode it twice and the second time was much quicker, both down and up, but not according to Strava. Unless Strava is inconsistent in how it ranks your runs i.e sometimes puts the second faster run before the first slower run in the results - but this isn't my experience elsewhere.  This isn't the first time I have seen this happen at Hoogies on this segment. Usually I am spot on in assessing whether I have been quicker or not on  a segment. Not so at Hoogies.

On the Tokai front - is it not possible for a clean slate to be created for Strava there. Surely we could get the okes in the USA to clean every segment off so we can put up some new ones?

Well, I should be about eleventy seven percent faster with this on the rear...

Had to order it as they weren't in stock at my Spaz outlet. Sure gonna look zeff on my giant reign with my Schwalbe front rubber.

I'll hit the KOM later once they've evened the downhill section and removed all the rocky bits after the maintenance cycle is completed

Going very well. Love it. It rolls well, grips superbly when leaned over and has surprisingly good traction on the climbs - even wet & loose climbs it eats for breakfast.

Is obviously a bit loose when things get rowdy, but I like that. You're able to set up for corners very well.

Sidewalls are stronger than the Onza FRC, and the rubber is nice and grippy. Would recommend this and the Rock Razor for pretty much all conditions.

so no folding carcass / sidewall as on a std control casing when running lower pressures. .... and being ridden by a "big boned rider"?

No. Well, yes. But that's cos I had it at 15psi for some stupid reason. Must have been a slightly leaky valve or a small imperfection in the seal. And even then, it wasn't overly rolly.

At 25PSI - not a hint. Not as burly as the Super Gravity casings, but hardly anything is.
