Every February, mountain bikers from across South Africa, Europe and beyond gather in the heart of the Koue Bokkeveld for one of the most authentic stage race experiences on the calendar — the Momentum Medical Scheme Tankwa Trek, presented by Biogen. Hosted from Kaleo Guest Farm near Ceres, roughly two and a half hours from Cape Town, this four-day event combines world-class riding with a relaxed, farm-style atmosphere that keeps riders coming back year after year.

The Full Tankwa Experience

From start to finish, riders stay at the race venue for the entire duration of the event. The farm transforms into a vibrant race village where participants eat, sleep, and unwind together between stages. It’s a rare setup that adds to the sense of camaraderie and connection that defines the Tankwa spirit.

Each stage offers something unique — from flowing singletrack through orchards and rocky valleys to the iconic Merino Monster, arguably the most challenging climb in mountain biking that test even the fittest legs. The routes are expertly crafted by fellow mountain bikers to reward skill, fitness, and teamwork, while still being achievable for well-prepared amateur riders.

Participants can look forward to:

  • A mix of terrain: Fast-rolling gravel sections, punchy climbs, and signature trails like the Houdenbek singletracks.
  • Top-notch race organization: From route marking, medical support and sports recovery services to waterpoints stocked with Biogen products and local treats.
  • A relaxed race village vibe: Kaleo’s scenic setting becomes a buzzing hub of activity with hearty meals and the camaraderie of riders sharing stories after each stage.
  • Unforgettable views: The Koue Bokkeveld region is rugged, raw, and spectacularly beautiful, offering a true taste of adventure riding in the Western Cape.

Teams Only

The Tankwa Trek is exclusively a team event, with pairs working together from start to finish. This format adds a strategic element to every stage — pacing, support, and communication often prove as crucial as fitness. Whether you’re chasing the pros or simply riding to conquer the challenge together, the two-rider format makes the experience that much more rewarding.

Accommodation and Upgrade Packages

Entries include all meals, freshly prepared and served at Kaleo’s dining facilities throughout the event as well as a rider chill zone with snacks between meals. Riders can choose from various accommodation options, including standard tents, upgraded luxury tent packages, and formal cottages for those who prefer extra comfort after long days in the saddle.

Every detail is handled on-site — from registration to finish line celebrations — allowing riders to focus purely on the riding, recovery, and the relaxed social atmosphere that unfolds each evening.

Why You Should Be There

Whether you’re chasing a podium or riding for the love of the trail, the Tankwa Trek delivers a complete experience. It’s a rare blend of professional-level racing and hearty hospitality, appealing equally to elite riders, weekend warriors, and adventure seekers.

Many see it as the perfect season opener — an opportunity to test legs, refine teamwork, and enjoy the outdoors before the bigger stage races later in the year. It’s also one of the few events where you can line up next to some of the world’s best mountain bikers while soaking in a truly South African atmosphere.

How to Enter

Entries open on the official website: www.tankwatrek.co.za.
The event is teams only, with no solo category, and spots are limited — they tend to sell out quickly. Teams are encouraged to register early to secure their place on the start line.

The Essence of Tankwa

More than just a race, the Tankwa Trek is a celebration of mountain biking — where dust, sweat, and scenery come together to create lifelong memories. If you’re looking for an event that combines a world-class route, warm hospitality, and the spirit of South African mountain biking, this is it.
