Statement regarding alternative routes for 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 355 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is aware of the current situation regarding the fires raging in the mountains of the Southern Peninsula through which the Cape Town Cycle Tour traditionally passes. We are in close contact with the City of Cape Town Disaster Management team as well as their Events Office and all the other role players.

As part of our standard operating procedure we have alternative route plans available for consideration by the authorities.

Once the situation pertaining to the existing route is made clear to us we will be in a better position to make a final decision about our plans for Sunday, 8 March.

We anticipate making a final decision in consultation with all the stakeholders by this coming Wednesday, 4 March.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by this devastating fire and the brave dedicated firemen trying to bring it under control.

We appeal to the hundreds of cyclists out training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour to please avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.

If the event is cancelled, we will not be refunded our entry fees! It is in the terms and conditions that we all agreed to when we entered! The organisers reserve the right to cancel the event due to unsafe conditions and /or natural disasters.

I think it is very short notice to have the route completely changed! Lets wait and see what they say at the press conference at 16h00!

missed that part.....thanks for telling me!

Just in: CTCT press conference delayed untill 18:30.

Hectic stuff

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille says the fires in Cape Town are under control, but the situation was under control on Tuesday night when the wind switched and they flared up again.

"The risk is matched by the resource, the current situation is that they have it under control," she said.

I reckon with it being under control they are hanging off as long as possible to make a call on a route.

Zille said she has full confidence that the fire teams will put the fire out by Sunday, when the Cape Town Cycle Tour takes place.

"It is known as the most scenic cycle tour in the world but now it will tour through some of the greatest devastation that peninsula has ever seen, which will be heart-wrenching," she said.

I will ride it.

No matter where it starts, no matter where it finishes.

Argus is such a huge GEES day for all(ok the majority) of capetonians. We will pull it off no matter what has happened.

So I hope on the Train at Simons Town station with my bike? Start close to a station? Sorry from Jhb....

Don't worry i'm also from joburg. Yip you do as you said. Just remember to buy a ticket from the train station or the expo before hand. Its slightly more expensive than a normal ticket as its a Bicycle transport ticket. Last year I think it was R40 return(which I still thought was cheap). Its like a 2 min ride from station to start. Just check train schedule and your start time. I start at 06h20 and MUST catch the first train which gets there just in time. Last year there where some people at the expo selling tickets, They where at the exit of the registration spot(just before going through to official merchandise section) on the right hand side.

Perfect - thanks guys! Now lets see what comes of the route decision this evening. Kudos to all you guys & gals fighting the fires - very sad sight! Be safe!

My money is on this year's tour, which would have been my first, is gonna be cancelled. No way the tour trust and City of Cape Town are going to let people ride through that devastation, with the inherent risks that involves. The smoke from this fire will linger for days, and the ash and dust which is going to be kicked up by the wind on Sunday will make for extremely difficult riding. People who are not really fit will definitely find it hard going. People could suffer respiratory and cardiac problems in that kind of environment. I hope I am wrong, but I don't see another outcome to this.

Would have been my first too! Have decided not to add to the chaos. A far distance to travel from Pta not to do the 'proper' route.

Donated the charity entrance fee to CANSA.

The first time should be the best! Not so?

Strength to all parties concerned.

SANParks spokesperson Merle Collins confirmed that a part of Cape Point was burning. However she had not details of which part or how big the fire was and if it was related to the fire on the south peninsula or a separate one.

Just curious, why is there such a strong perception that the race will be cancelled.  Can one not ride next to a piece of land that burned down?

excuse my ignorance, I live in the highveld and have ridden through hundreds of fields that burn down every winter.  I understand that the fynbos is a different kettle of fish to the highveld grasslands, but is it really not possible to ride there?
