Statement regarding alternative routes for 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 355 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is aware of the current situation regarding the fires raging in the mountains of the Southern Peninsula through which the Cape Town Cycle Tour traditionally passes. We are in close contact with the City of Cape Town Disaster Management team as well as their Events Office and all the other role players.

As part of our standard operating procedure we have alternative route plans available for consideration by the authorities.

Once the situation pertaining to the existing route is made clear to us we will be in a better position to make a final decision about our plans for Sunday, 8 March.

We anticipate making a final decision in consultation with all the stakeholders by this coming Wednesday, 4 March.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by this devastating fire and the brave dedicated firemen trying to bring it under control.

We appeal to the hundreds of cyclists out training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour to please avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.

Media release from City of Cape Town:

Firefighters from various agencies continue to actively manage a fire in the South Peninsula, three days after it started in Muizenberg above Boyes Drive.

Currently, the firefighting efforts are focused on the following hotspots: Lower Constantia Nek and the upper Tokai area, Clovelly, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, Hout Bay and Noordhoek.

A total of six helicopters are water-bombing hotspots, including two paid for by the City of Cape Town, two from Table Mountain National Park and two Oryx helicopters from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). Working on Fire sourced an additional 150 staff members who have been deployed with other ground crews.

I think at this moment it is safe to say that even OKW will be out because of the fire moving along Constantia towards Kirstenbosch and Table Mountain.

Agree - what about the Cape Epic?

It's going to be difficult to make a call on the route today with the fire still burning the way that it is.  Also, wind is predicted to swing to SE which will be terrible news if it does jump Constantia Nek.

The Epic doesn't go around the peninsula...

Was referring to the prologue on Table Mountain - if the fire / smoke gets there.

I'm not riding in the northern suburbs.

Or up the west coast for that matter! :)

going to be a real tough call for the race organizers......

Does the T&C's mentioned anything about a natural disaster?

If so does the fire(be it, a possible cigarette tosser) not constitute this?

I, like many, travel in from Simons Town for the race, so could be a problem getting to the start no matter what the route if changed.....

Agree man! I rode through there on Saturday and the road has level changes (like manhole covers 10cm above the road surface) and only one lane (3m max) going between Muizenberg and St James - the other half is still sand and not even ready for tarmac

THAT section is now proudly sponsored by MediClinic and ER24 (+ a couple of ortho surgeons)...they will have a field day and might as well put up a field hospital right there... no need for evacuating poor cyclists!!

Has anyone thought of all the cyclists who actually DIED in preperation for this event? It would be such a tragic, yet ironic turn of events if the entire event has to be cancelled...actually un-imagainable!! (not that those loss of cyclists lives could ever have been justified...)
