Statement regarding alternative routes for 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 355 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is aware of the current situation regarding the fires raging in the mountains of the Southern Peninsula through which the Cape Town Cycle Tour traditionally passes. We are in close contact with the City of Cape Town Disaster Management team as well as their Events Office and all the other role players.

As part of our standard operating procedure we have alternative route plans available for consideration by the authorities.

Once the situation pertaining to the existing route is made clear to us we will be in a better position to make a final decision about our plans for Sunday, 8 March.

We anticipate making a final decision in consultation with all the stakeholders by this coming Wednesday, 4 March.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by this devastating fire and the brave dedicated firemen trying to bring it under control.

We appeal to the hundreds of cyclists out training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour to please avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.

I cannot see any alternative other than changing the route.I somehow doubt whether it would be cancelled, too many people have flights/hotel's etc booked and paid for.

I am flying down to Cape Town tomorrow morning no matter what the decision is.

In the meanwhile I will pray for everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.

Looks like we'll have news after 4pm. The CTCT have announced a press conference at 16h00 today regarding the event.

Best they include a nice tough climb in this new route to pop the wheel suckers who usually hang on until the bottom of Smits Winkel  :whistling:

I see you want to go over Vissershok..... :whistling:

By the time the fires are out the emergency services will have battled it for around the clock for almost a week.

Would they have the capacity to implement and execute a plan B or even C for the race without a break in between?

I recon we might see the Tour move out to the Northern burbs for the first time in history :-)

A colleague just mentioned something I never thought of. If they detour the route over OKW and the wind picks up strongly during the day can you just imagine the risk of ash inhalation? It would be a huge safety issue for riders.

Interesting days we live in.

Inland of Blouberg and there's the odd bit of vertical road to shake off the sucking crew....

Respect that there are many that would rather see the event cancelled as it will not have the same feel as previous years and yes the original route is spectacular as it winds its way round the ocean front surrounding the peninsula! But do these same people respect that there are many others who would like to show support for the efforts being put in by the crews of firefighters battling this disaster and some solidarity for the people affected who have lost homes, by still choosing to pitch up, invest their money and time by being here?

Get some route together and let these people ride. Come on Cycle Tour Trust, you can do it! Show us your back up plan!

What about the stellenbocsh cycle tour route?

Don't think that it will be easy to move the venue at short notice, might be easier to keep it and move route.

Tiekie draai, N7 Vissershok should be fun

If the event is cancelled, we will not be refunded our entry fees! It is in the terms and conditions that we all agreed to when we entered! The organisers reserve the right to cancel the event due to unsafe conditions and /or natural disasters.

I think it is very short notice to have the route completely changed! Lets wait and see what they say at the press conference at 16h00!

Why, it is in the T$C that the route can be changed at ANY time so they can tell the day before or like in the Epic, the night before that a route has changed due to xyz.

Agreed! I' for one, will be delighted to accept a slightly chaotic ride, over an unfamiliar route, to show we can pull together (and pull a cycle tour rabbit out of a hat the ashes)

If the 99er was anything to go by, and in the unimaginable event of the CTCT going over vissers, then the Big Walk will have come early
