Statement regarding alternative routes for 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 355 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is aware of the current situation regarding the fires raging in the mountains of the Southern Peninsula through which the Cape Town Cycle Tour traditionally passes. We are in close contact with the City of Cape Town Disaster Management team as well as their Events Office and all the other role players.

As part of our standard operating procedure we have alternative route plans available for consideration by the authorities.

Once the situation pertaining to the existing route is made clear to us we will be in a better position to make a final decision about our plans for Sunday, 8 March.

We anticipate making a final decision in consultation with all the stakeholders by this coming Wednesday, 4 March.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by this devastating fire and the brave dedicated firemen trying to bring it under control.

We appeal to the hundreds of cyclists out training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour to please avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.

Nothing stopping the Cycle tour from going along there, just the risks of Mudslides should there be rain, Ash that can be blown up by South Easter Wind, Rocks that could have been dislodged by heat from fire on mountains.

Just curious, why is there such a strong perception that the race will be cancelled.  Can one not ride next to a piece of land that burned down?

excuse my ignorance, I live in the highveld and have ridden through hundreds of fields that burn down every winter.  I understand that the fynbos is a different kettle of fish to the highveld grasslands, but is it really not possible to ride there?

The problem is the fact that roads are normally closed for the race with cyclists all over the road.  That will make rescue and recovery operations very difficult.

Plus potential rock slides on the passes, damaged roads (maybe) and ash blowing around.

and the fact that it is still burning and it does not look like it will be done anytime soon.

I think the greatest concern would be whether or not the fires are under control/extinguished by Sunday - its a question of smoke inhalation for cyclists and access to flash points by emergency services. The latest and greatest threat at the moment would probably be the Cape Point fire.

Friend of mine just went through Noordhoek and the following signage was erected:

Cycle Tour

City/Noordhoek

(via Ou Kaapse Weg)

06h45 15h30

Sun 8 March

So i take it it is OKW M3 to finish...

and looking outside the office, these guys are very busy with the start line scaffolding....

Question: What about the stands at the expo? Are they not suppose to be preparing today already? Is that happening?

Those signs have been up for a couple of weeks, standard for OKW to be closed for the tour! Nothing new!

The biggest problem is entry and exit for emergency vehicles as having Main Road, Ou Kaapse and Chappies closed could be a disaster with 35000 cyclists on the road!

SANParks spokesperson Merle Collins confirmed that a part of Cape Point was burning. However she had not details of which part or how big the fire was and if it was related to the fire on the south peninsula or a separate one.

We were at Cape Point reserve today. Got evacuated as a fire started at Gifkommetjie, and was spreading further south east with the wind behind it

Route change or not, cancelled or not.

We will be in Cape Town this weekend to ride our bikes.

The city may very well withdraw the CTCT event permit. But this is also just speculation... we'll just have to wait and see what they've decided later this evening.

the worry is the fact that they say contained. If the south easter starts to blow there it will be a REAL issue

Perhaps give the peninsula a complete miss...

Start-M3-left at Muizenberg-Stellenbosch-R304-N1-Kloof Nek-Camps bay to the end stretch...

±25Km longer (134km), but no killer climbs. I did a map & everything :D

Yours sincerely,
