SRAM introduces 12-speed Eagle drivetrains

By Press Office · 214 comments

SRAM introduced the first ever, purpose built 1x drivetrain, and is the absolute leader in 1x technology and innovation. We have manufactured, tested and ridden hundreds of thousands of SRAM 1x drivetrains, and have capitalized on the lessons learned from our experience to create all new drivetrains with Eagle Technology. Eagle drivetrains provide unparalleled performance, enhanced toughness and durability, and the freedom of a 500 percent gear range.

In 2012, we introduced the world’s first purpose built 1x drivetrain — and it forever changed the way we ride. SRAM 1x changed the way we look at mountain bikes. Gone was the front derailleur, which immediately improved shifting simplicity and performance. It dropped a significant chunk of weight from the bike. It made shifting easier and consistently better for racers hitting the redline and new riders alike. It made mountain biking better for everyone. And it still does. We invented it, we build more 1x drivetrains than anyone else, and we are unrelenting in our commitment to furthering 1x technology.

Introducing SRAM Eagle Technology, our most advanced and highest-performing drivetrains to date. The new XX1 and X01 drivetrains, featuring Eagle Technology, are collections of components that have been engineered for a whole new level of ride quality and integration. These drivetrains have not only been refined, we have torn them apart, built them up, tested, tweaked, engineered and tested again. Eagle Technology delivers a drivetrain that is smoother, simpler, more durable and quieter than anything you’ve ever ridden. Add to that Eagle’s massive gear range, and you have greater freedom to ride how you want, where you want. Performance, durability, simplicity, range, freedom: Introducing Eagle, only from SRAM.

XX1 Eagle

We built the incredible new XX1 Eagle drivetrain to work quietly, intuitively, precisely and perfectly. Whether you’re an hour and twelve minutes into a World Cup XC or, just about to hit the top of Pearl Pass—XX1 Eagle is ready for that and every place in between. This cross-country-optimized drivetrain combines our newest generation of SRAM 1x drivetrain technological advancements with lightweight materials. With a greater gear range of 500-percent, XX1 Eagle gives you smoother, more precise shifts with greater durability for long lasting performance so you can spend more time in the gear you want. XX1 Eagle just rewrote the rules of freedom.

It might look normal from the outside, but the engineering inside this incredible new chain design that makes possible a gear range previously found only in 2-chainring drivetrains. And it’s also the biggest contributor to the Eagle drivetrain’s ultra-smooth, precise, durable and quiet performance. The Eagle chain’s links have a smooth radius, with no sharp edges or chamfers, which yield a significant reduction in noise, friction and wear on chainrings and cassette cogs. This design also allows for a flatter plate, which means more consistent chain riveting and greater overall strength. HARD CHROME technology extends the chain’s optimal performance life, and a Titanium Nitride coating on the Gold and Black models decreases corrosion and further reduces friction.

Eagle Chainring

The radical new look and feel of our X-SYNC 2 Eagle chainring is a direct result of SRAM drivetrain engineers studying the performance and wear characteristics of thousands of X-SYNC chainrings. We subjected every size of chainring to untold environmental and mechanical tortures, abuse and neglect, in both lab and real-world settings, to come up with a chainring that would augment the Eagle drivetrain’s performance in all conditions. The longer, positive-rake tooth shape has been designed to work perfectly with the new Eagle chain to increase chain retention and overall pedaling efficiency, while decreasing friction, noise and wear.

Agreed! If you need a 50T on the back you probably should sell your bike.........

It does look hot though. The pros will only ride it because they are told too. There is no way they need a 50T

Dude. I know it's Friday and all, but...

You're missing the point. They couldn't go smaller, so they went bigger and achieved the same result. Now you can up your chairing size by 20% and have the same climbing gear (30t to 36t) and have a far higher top end for the flat sections.

For me, that's the benefit. Not going for the 10-50 and keeping the same size ring... that would truly be silly.

XX1 cassette. First chain was XX1, the second is the X1(cheaper version) if I remember correctly. I have the Absolute Black oval 34t on at the front

I got max 4000km out of X1 and XX1 cassettes. Dunno if that's normal as I looked after them very well with cleaning etc? I'm now trying GX cassette cos it's getting quite costly per km!!

Nah, will skip this.  13 speed is around the corner and I'd hate to waste so much money now and then be a gear behind. ;)

My XO1 XG-1195 cassette has about 1500km on it now and its still looks new. The chain is less than 0.2% worn. Still on the first chain.

I'm hoping to wear out the cassette by August but if I don't and I doubt I will I'll just move the 11speed stuff to a trail bike project or my wife's 26er.

I'm running a 34T chainring on 650b wheels so now I can a 36T and have a taller top end and a lower low end for very little extra weight.

Looks nice and SRAM did some homework on the chain and cranks.

They can make the range ( 500 percent gear range) as wide as they like (sounds good in the adverts) BUT at the end of the day you still only have 12 gears to play with. This wide range over 12 gears means you going to have some serious changes in cadence between each gear change. Ever had that feeling when you cannot find the right gear because its either to hi or to low.... well its going to get worse, see the illustration below representing the 1 x 12 cassette teeth range

10, 12, 14, 16, 18,   21,   24,    28,    32,    36,      42,        50

4 teeth is already a big jump and starts slap in the middle and gets worse going right up to a huge 6 and then 8 teeth difference

I like the idea of simplicity and less clutter on the bike, but at the end of the day it needs to be practical and comfortable to ride with.

Missing the part where the 50t allows you to go up at the front by 20% and thereby gain you more top end. So instead of running a 30t 10-42 you can run a 36t 10-50.

It's not about the granny...

The spacing between gear ratios is not a problem. You hardly notice it when you pedaling because your body doesn't care if the gaps are 15% or 16%or 18%.

Now they just need to E-Tap this and it will be Eutopia . Up/down buttons right next to your brake clamp (or anywhere you like for that matter)

Electric shifting for a 1x build would be a bit of a waste imo.

Why? No wires. No faff. No internal or external routing. A clean frame and bar setup. Bring it on.

No cables at all , and a very clean handle bar , basically 2 break levers (if you opt for a non remote shock lockout)

XX1 cassette. First chain was XX1, the second is the X1(cheaper version) if I remember correctly. I have the Absolute Black oval 34t on at the front

Hi Rudi

Are you happy with the oval 34T, how is your experience with it?

Would need a blipbox if just using the blips for shifts or it would need shifter integrated to the brake mastercylinder. Remember an AIREA transmitter is needed for the wireless transmitting of signals

But wait a few weeks....

I just dont think 1 less cable would be such a massive advantage. Perhaps a bit more aero...

but is electrics a step towards simplifying, or more complexity?

Technology has its stages and we are currently living it. The guys buying now are paying for research to find the perfect combinations. In mean time we get the trickle down allowing us OPTIONS.

I am all for it but the Replacement wheel (still normal Hub)+ R20k, would have other half very unimpressed with me.

We are moving into an era of mountain bikers who are strong enough to chuck out half their gears, find it challenging to operate a FD or would rather have lockout and dropper levers on their handle bars. Electric shifting will so make life even more simple and free up the mind for....something

How do u change the font on these apple thingys? ????

I dreamt about this 1x12 lastnight, it felt smooth and had less gaps between gears!
