We’ve been waiting for this one. Today Shimano announce their 12-speed 105 groupset. Check out the full press release below:

With the introduction of the SHIMANO 105 R7100 Mechanical 12-speed groupset, Shimano brings the pure joy of self-powered adventure to the massive community of cycling enthusiasts looking for reliable, easy-to-maintain componentry at an affordable price.

The new, lightweight SHIMANO 105 Mechanical groupset offers Premium Mechanical Shifting, which means riders can capture that natural riding feeling without worrying about battery levels – while still enjoying the comfort and range of a premium 12-speed groupset.

SHIMANO 105 Mechanical 12-speed comes with an RD-R7100 rear derailleur infused with SHIMANO SHADOW RD technology. This offers a low profile and single-tension construction, giving riders a smooth, efficient, and silent performance, while the FD-R7100 front derailleur features toggle-link construction. This means riders can rely on hassle-free shifting, whether going up to the larger chainring or dropping down to the small one.

SHIMANO 105: All-round Drivetrain

With the jump to 12-speed, SHIMANO 105 R7100 Mechanical delivers the high and low gearing that riders want, along with an intelligent progression of gear steps in between. This is the result of optimized drivetrain components, including 11-34T and 11-36T cassette options, while the FC-R7100 HOLLOWTECH II 12-speed cranksets have 50-34T and 52-36T chainring options. Using 50-34T chainrings with an 11-34T, or even an 11-36T cassette means riders can climb any mountain while keeping their cadence efficient and manageable up those long, steady climbs. Additionally, SHIMANO 105 Mechanical’s semi- compact 52-36T setup will reduce the chance of spinning out mid-descent or when sprinting on the flats.

SHIMANO 105: Enhanced Ergonomics and Powerful Control

Designed to fit any hand size and shape, the ST-R7120 Shift/Brake levers provide a relaxed shifting experience with the next-generation ergonomic mechanical shift levers, ensuring more comfort and control.

SHIMANO 105 Mechanical’s integrated cables remove the clutter from the cockpit and provide a more focused riding experience – perfect for long days in the saddle.

Braking is optimized for use with current SHIMANO 105 BR- 7170 calipers, making braking effortless and more efficient. The redesigned brake calipers offer 10% more clearance with the brake rotor – meaning less rubbing and a quieter ride. The system is light, durable, and maintenance-friendly, with targeted innovation to simplify the brake bleeding process. SHIMANO 105 R7100 Mechanical is only compatible with hydraulic disc brakes.

Thanks to a lighter, smoother lever action and expanded braking control area, the reach – the distance from handlebar to lever – is also reduced.

SHIMANO 105: Premium Mechanical Shifting

Each component of Shimano 105 Mechanical is engineered to work in perfect harmony. With the refined 12-speed gear system, riders will have peak efficiency and accelerating performance for any situation on the road.

Great to see that they are still providing a 12 speed mechanical option. Anyone willing to venture how much this "affordable" groupset is going to cost?

I got quoted 10k for 105 R7000 Hydraulic levers and calipers, so you're probably not far off.

At that price just head to Merlin and import an entire groupset and sell off everything that you don't need, or if you want to keep your current levers TRP makes a dual action/sided mechanical disc caliper, I have listed them below.

Bike is a Giant Contend. Already has Giants cable to hydraulic conduct system on it.

But at 10k+, given what I paid for the bike, I'd probably start hunting down a whole new bike instead.

But the exercise was merely a "what if" rather than a want / need to change.
