Race report: 2015 WP Gravity Enduro Championship | Contermanskloof

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 23 comments

The first edition of the Western Province Gravity Enduro Championships took place this past Sunday at the scenic Contermanskloof MTB Trails. With the trails still surrounded by green fields and colorful fynbos, the high speed, rough and technical terrain was a welcome change from the previous races. The field of 96 riders faced 4 stages – the 3 usual suspects and a mystery 1.4km long stage on Hillcrest thrown in for good measure. All the elements for a great race were in place – a well marked course, good weather, plenty of riders and of course, free beer afterwards.

The event was a lot of fun and just my 3rd ever enduro race so it was awesome to come away with the win! A massive thanks to all the organizers, my team and sponsors.
Stefan Garlicki – SOLID

Previous WPGE event winners Gary Barnard and Matt Lombardi attended with one thing in mind – going hard and taking the top spot. But it was pro Downhiller Stefan Garlicki that trumped everybody with a total racing time of 12 minutes and 5 seconds. Johan Potgieter came in second overall, closely followed by Gary Barnard, only 5 seconds back. Trail builder, recent father, and all round nice guy Robert Starke used local knowledge to come home in 4th/5th place, sharing the spot with Myles Kelsey.

Contermans Kloof is a great place for an Enduro race, Rob Starke has hand crafted a great combination of flowing trails and technical challenges that keeps you 100% focused on the trail ahead instead of your burning legs. The competition was tough with Stefan and Johann added to the already strong mix of riders that fight for podium positions. I was so happy to be riding my 160mm Pyga Enduro bike with a full face helmet and 1kg tires, that’s a #fullenduro setup.

not sure if you serious or not :P, but lets say you are: why would he get a DSQ? He is still 'wearing' the lid, if only the loosest sense possible, pun unintended! :P

Nah, I'm was being serious. I was under the impression that a helmet had to be correctly fitted (on your head!) at all times while you're on the bike, whether it be open faced or full face.

That said, I had a quick look on the EWS site and they don't spell out that the helmet has to be properly fitted (on your head), which I think leaves rules open to a lot of interpretation (which is never good). So it looks like you're off the hook  :whistling:

I guess technically they don't specify that it needs to be worn on your head, so you could wear it on your elbow then on the liason stages (as long as it fits correctly  ;))

It really was a great event! Big up to the organisers (now please sort the timing out or get a new timer!) and Thomas for the sweet video and Ewald for the rad photo's- Well done to Stefan for the win and all the riders for surviving the course and having the coolest attitudes and vibe in the sport. Great to see lots of people on flat pedals and sporting the appropriate protection.

I gave this one a skip, but it looks like a great coarse.

I do agree that the timing has to be sorted out which is a major part if not the whole race. It seems every race has timing issues. they seriously need to break free from the common denominator in this instance and move to a different system as it is really getting to a point that they are going to lose the riders who support them.

The photo's look great and makes me a little sad i did not enter.

I am really keen to see what time system the guys in Durban are using.

Sheesh, how can they still not be able to do the timing correctly? Ewald, I don't think there is a better person to curate wp mtb than you. Mucho talento.

Yep that would be me... you probably talking about yourself when saying drifting. If you referring to me, then I'd rather call It "dragging the brakes" haha

It's Kew you could still enjoy the endure through the difficulty Bro.
