Sponsored by KwaZulu-Natal Sports and Recreation, who have provided fantastic support of cycling events in the province, the annual championship event will crown the provincial cross-country champion across all the age categories on Saturday 30 May. Cross-country racing is mountain biking’s only Olympic discipline.

Cascades MTB Park has hosted some top-notch mountain bike events over the years, including the 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014 UCI MTB World Cups and the 2013 UCI MTB & Trials World Championships, as well as the 2014 UCI MTB Marathon World Championships.

Trail builder extraordinaire, Nick Floros, the man responsible for designing and building the World Cup and World Championship tracks, is using his creative flow to ensure that the provincial championship track offers some fresh changes.

“Being a championship event, it needs to be a hard route for the riders yet also appeal to the spectators,” said Floros. “There are so many trails over here that it is like a rabbit warren, so the objective is to connect them in a unique way that makes for interesting racing while being spectator friendly.”

Floros will be incorporating a lot of the “old stuff” but linked in a new and refreshing manner, keeping most of the racing action near the bottom end of the park so that it can be viewed from the start/finish area.
