Official Statement: 2023 FNB Wines2Whales Stage 1 Route Change

Press release from Epic Series

By Press Office · 19 comments

Since the devastating floods in the Western Cape, the event organisers and local authorities have been working closely to ensure the event can go ahead safely and be filled with #SeriousGees as always.

The recent reopening of the Hemel en Aarde as well as Karwyderskraal roads has meant a dramatic increase in vehicle traffic on these roads, which presents a safety risk to our riders on the originally planned Stage 1 of the 2023 FNB Wines2Whales Switchback.

The race will now proceed with Stage 1 both starting and finishing at Lourensford Wine Estate. Teams will then be shuttled to Oak Valley to race Stage 2 and 3 as planned.

Speaking ahead of the 2023 FNB Wines2Whales, Race Director, Hendrico Burger said: “We have been looking forward to hosting a spectacular edition of FNB Wines2Whales and treating teams to a special Switchback route. The safety of our riders is our foremost priority, and we cannot proceed with the originally planned Stage 1 course due to safety concerns. This is especially disheartening, considering the dedicated efforts of our route team and the Hemel en Aarde trail builders, who have worked tirelessly to clear debris from the trails in the wake of recent floods to create new links in time for the 2023 edition.

“The rider experience for Stage 1 – though different – will still be excellent in Lourensford,” Burger promised. “There are enough trails to comfortably host an entire FNB Wines2Whales stage within the vast borders of the farm and the riding, as everyone who has been down the Lourensford Ultimate for example, knows it is exceptional.”

“We are extremely disappointed that the annual event will not have a presence in Hermanus this year due to logistical reasons. We look forward to welcoming the event back again next year,” says Councillor Clinton Lerm, Overstrand Mayco Member for Investment, Infrastructure and Tourism.

Stage 1 will thus start and finish at Lourensford. The 59 kilometre stage will take in 1 800 metres of climbing and showcase the best singletracks on the estate in a way which has never been possible during the FNB Wines2Whales before. Thereafter teams will transfer to Oak Valley in busses, while their bicycles will be shuttled to the race village.

Stage 2 will then continue as planned, with the route taking in trails on Oak Valley, Paul Cluver and onto Tierkop. Stage 3 will also follow the originally planned route, starting at Oak Valley and looping above the Eikenhof Dam before climbing the A to Z Trails and descending Gantouw Pass into the Helderberg basin. After crossing through the Idiom and Vergelegen Game Reserves the race will enter Lourensford once more and follow the new Canal Trail to the finish line.

The flood-affected 2023 FNB Wines2Whales was already shaping up to be an event to remember. Further changes to the route will undoubtedly ensure that it stands out, even for the riders who have completed ten or more editions. It will however not change the #SeriousGees which reigns supreme in the race village. Riders taking part in the Chardonnay race are reminded to pack their Springbok supporters’ jerseys, or something green at the very least, in order to cheer on the team when they play England in the Rugby World Cup semifinal on Saturday evening.

it's a charity thing, Rotary, they made it clear there was no refund. I'm not sure what they do but hope it's used well ;)

Are they going to change the name to Wine to Wine.

Still excited, despite the name/route change. Will be breaking my W2W virginity. Doing the Shiraz.

Question to those who finished today and stayed in the tents: how did you fit all your goodies in the bag? The bag is without a doubt the nicest bag out of all I've had but I can only just squeeze my sleeping bag and pillow into it. Can we use one of the old bags?

So I got creative and got my goodies in but ended up driving to Oak Valley and using the Rotary service to take my car back to the finish (had booked before the route change and seeing proceeds are very well used, didn't want a refund).

Some feedback after the Pinotage (on an analogue bike):

Lourensford stage 1: really lekker route with solid climbs (particularly 1st 20km) and a variety of singletrack, some flow trail and some tight and more technical. Showers were available at the finish and buses taking people to Oak Valley were leaving at regular intervals.

Oak Valley stage 2: we had overnight rain and lots of mud so it wasn't too much of a play day. It's a real pity as it was clear JK and his teams had put in many hours to repair damage from the first event.

Oak valley to Lourensford stage 3: climb from WP 1 to Gantouw is gorgeous and enjoy the views before the portage because your eyes are glued to where you're going to put your foot down so you don't slip or twist an ankle. The 2nd half has some fast rolling dirt and singletrack and was good fun.

Routes were excellently marked, fun and the amount of work invested in them is huge.

Water points were extremely well stocked by Food Lovers and USN and had tech zones. Gees was a little quiet - maybe just because it was the mid week event which is more laid back and missed Shaun Peters familiar voice en route.

Race village is amazing with permanent shower set ups which are spacious with cooking hot water. Lots of undercover areas and the FNB chill zone has heaters, poofs  charging stations, hot drinks and tv's. Food and drink available for sale and food supplied by Food Lovers for participants was plentiful. Thanks Cadbury for the ice creams for dessert. Squirt will wash your bike for you (you may not do it yourself) and the bike park is secure. Thanks FNB for the little goody bags in our tents with a headlamp - indispensible when in the blue tents.

To those riding next weekend, good luck and don't forget to take in your beautiful surroundings, enjoy the hand built trails and acknowledge the many volunteers and sponsors who make this event possible.

Install the app - you need it for comms and seeding info

There's no reception at Oak Valley but there is free wifi (ask for details at race office)

Pack ear plugs if staying in tents unless you enjoy the chorus of snores and farts.

If you're going big to celebrate (or commiserate) Saturday's rugby, pack your Essentiale :P

Don't forget about the Giant Happy Hour from 5-6PM each day (FREE beer) and the Liv Nail bar for the ladies after Stage 2! (Shameless punt to get some friendly faces across to the Giant and Liv tents ;) )

My first W2W done and dusted (very dusted). Ended up being quite the workout. But nothing too serious. (My prep was daily commute and weekend 2hr-ish rides.)

One thing I'll bring along next time, a proper air mattress. The one provided (blue tent option) was soft, thin and dirty with a plastic bag around it. (don't take the bag off, 2 wolf spiders came out of mine.)

The fnb recharge zone was amazing. Far enough from the loud music/commentary. Good wifi. Just too few poefsakke to accommodate us all.

Food was ok. Breakfast was the best.

I hope they didnt send you down the same trails that were 'chocolate mousse' for us on Stage 2 of the Chardonnay! After pushing through the mud up Protea Alley and then trying to carry our bikes, the only way to get through the quagmire, through Rietvlie Magic, washing our bikes, for the fourth time in the last 3 hours, in the dam at the end, we pulled the plug. Flagged down a motorbike marshall, and asked him to guide us out of the mudbath on a ridable trail back to Oak Valley. No fun for the back markers, we should have been warned that the trails would be unridable. I was very thankfull that I was not staying in the tents, the cold and marshlike conditions around the camp were not great. Day 3 was an enjoyable day of riding, but at the end, in the hospitality tent, with no Lager left on sale and the under cooked, raw pizzas served, the only form of replenishment for a hard few hours of riding, was not enjoyable.

Two wolf spiders?! Like really?  F*ckit, I would have been out of there faster than you could say "two wolf spiders" and would have probably demolished half the tent city during my seedy departure, never to be seen again at the W2W's.

Hahaha. My powerbank made quick work of them. Too cramped and dark for a controlled catch and release. I did utter the recommended "p-bomb" that seemed to be the theme of the day on stage 2 with them knee deep mud puddles.

Raced Chardonnay, Day 2 was a absolute mess but overall great event.

Only negative feedback: the speakers are just too loud. Its absolutely deafening. Specially in the start shoot.
