By Press Office · 81 comments

Ryder Cycling, the owner of MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung, the team soon to be known as Team Dimension Data, today announced it has signed Mark Cavendish, Mark Renshaw and Bernhard Eisel. The addition of the three new members further strengthens and add depth to the team – the first African team to ride in the Tour de France – not only at races, but also as global ambassadors for Qhubeka.

Cavendish has raced for teams including HTC Highroad, Sky, and Etixx-QuickStep and has built a stunning palmarès. Some of his major achievements include becoming World Champion in 2011, and notching up 26 Tour de France and 15 Giro d’Italia stage wins on his account. Not only has Cavendish gained credibility as a sporting icon, he also shines off the bike.

The Team will announce further arrivals and its 2016 roster in the next few days.

I’m super excited about becoming a part of the Team for 2016. It is a team that I have watched closely as it has grown, especially over this season and been really impressed with the spirit, strength and dynamics of the group. It’s fair to say that most of the peloton has seen how incredible the Team raced this year. To join it with the target of helping to win even more races with other strong, experienced household cycling names like Mark Renshaw, Edvald Boasson-Hagen, Tyler Farrar, Daniel Teklehaimanot, Steve Cummings and of course Bernie Eisel is going to be real special, as well as assisting the talent of the young, African riders to top level success. Also, for me personally, one of the biggest incentives is riding for a greater cause in the Qhubeka charity. I’m really looking forward to having a successful year on the road alongside the other guys and helping directly to get more bikes in the hands of people who need them.
Mark Cavendish – Rider
Mark Cavendish joining our Team is a huge step forward for the team as we strive to get to the next level in world cycling. To also integrate Mark Renshaw and Bernie Eisel is a game changer in terms of performance and experience, which, added to the incredible talent we already have in the team opens up many possibilities for us. We have seen how success has brought fantastic new partners to our team in Dimension Data and Deloitte and the impact that it has had on our current bike partners like Cervelo. It is even more meaningful to tie that all together to achieve bigger impact for Qhubeka, the charity we ride for. Qhubeka, provides bicycles for African schoolchildren, enabling them to conquer distance every day to get to and from school. As the team’s visibility and success has increased, we are grateful for sponsors and individuals coming alongside to support our goal to provide 5000 bicycles for African schoolchildren via the #BicyclesChangeLives campaign. We look forward to working closely with Mark and the other riders to accelerate the growth of the team’s contributions on and off the bike in 2016 and beyond.
Douglas Ryder – Team Owner
We are excited at the impact that riders of Mark Cavendish, Mark Renshaw’ and Bernie Eisel’s stature can have on lives throughout the African continent This years riders have all been great ambassadors for the team, the African cause and the charity. It would be wonderful to see this community of support grow in 2016. We hope Mark and his fans will bring their support not just to the team, but also to Qhubeka’s mission and help make a difference for African schoolchildren and families.
Anthony Fitzhenry – Founder Qhubeka
Dimension Data welcomes Mark and his fellow riders to the Team. We’re very excited to be part of the squad’s next steps on its journey to accelerate their ambitions, and look forward to helping the Team to compete at the highest levels in world cycling, both on the African continent and across the world.
Brett Dawson – Dimension Data Group CEO

I was initially against the concept of one of the greats hijacking our team in his twilight years.

I think there will definitely be some disappointing aspects of this refocus, but long term this has to be a good move for the team.

Yip, we'll demand a reply when he doesn't win every grand tour stage he races in...

I think the pros outweight the cons.  Definately a world star which grabs the headlines.  Lets hope he is not on the downward spiral now.  Renshaw is an awesome leadout man.  I wonder if he can help Edvald.  I rate Edvald, he is a serious sprinter with a great future.  How many years left on his Qhubeka contract?

Some saying that this is great for the team and sponsors but perhaps going backwards for the 'African' team and African cycling development. I guess only time will tell ....

I think if Louis was still there everyone would be celebrating this move.

Can you please substantiate your reasons why this will be going backwards ?

Watched Super Cycling last night, and that Ryder chap is no fool. He knows what he's doing, and it looks very much like every move is well calculated...

He wouldn't have signed him without very good reason. Whether it's for Cav to perform on the bike, or for everything else that he brings to the table, like event entry invites, massive amounts of exposure for the team etc etc...

I didn't say that myself although I did say I am undecided on what the consequence will be. Just see commentary to this on Tweeta which of course could also just be a load of codswallop?

It seems as more the teams get into the upper levels they have to adapt to be able to perform, compete and most importantly win. Don't forget that is the key for any team and the ROI for any sponsor and so team survival.

Look at Sky, that is supposed to be a british team and they have a core of english riders and pull through young talent from the feeder programs but most of the team is international and getting more so. OGE was 'Australia's Team' and the same thing is there.

To be honest the teams that have kept very 'local' have struggled to get to the constant performance levels talent and expereince that is needed to be a top tier team, French and Spanish in particular.

If the aim of the team is to win AND develop riders (who will jump ship to further their career) then you need mentors, winners, sponsors, exposure, hype and access to international events and racing.

In some way the development angle has already been a success as it's taken LM off to a world tour team who will have him as a protected GC rider. What they have done it a short time has been phenomenal.

Nathan Haas rode for Cannondale, he will be a supporting rider and Omar Fraile won the King of the Mountains jersey at the Vuelta, so a excellent signing there!

I wonder if he will be getting paid in Rands or Pounds, seeing as though a free MTN contract is now out the window with the sponsor coming to an end, so that obviosuly wasn't the swing vote... With the Rand over 20 to the Pound, his salary must be quite a nice looking 1....

BTW, Anyone know what the new team colours will be??

I kinda liked the Qhubeka logo, Hope they manage to keep it somehow...

But will he win again without his fancy Specialized handlebars, socks and shoes?

I thought they were crucial to winning and having the ultimate edge?

I always enjoy the verbal gymnastics when athletes change sponsors and overnight have to punt a new product... shame it must be a toughie :)

The Cavenator is done for.

Spesh claim their integrated uberaeromegasuperultra design of bike, helmet, clothing, gloves, nose ring, beard and tonsils save 57 seconds/40km.

That means the Cav will be 4:45 behind the peleton on your average 200km race.

It's a shame really.

Any of you watch the British champs.. he rode very aggressive and attacked everywhere.. okay he came 3e.. but he is going to change his racing style. .he won't just rely on a lead out train.. he has to he isn't the fastest anymore.
