By Press Office · 81 comments

Ryder Cycling, the owner of MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung, the team soon to be known as Team Dimension Data, today announced it has signed Mark Cavendish, Mark Renshaw and Bernhard Eisel. The addition of the three new members further strengthens and add depth to the team – the first African team to ride in the Tour de France – not only at races, but also as global ambassadors for Qhubeka.

Cavendish has raced for teams including HTC Highroad, Sky, and Etixx-QuickStep and has built a stunning palmarès. Some of his major achievements include becoming World Champion in 2011, and notching up 26 Tour de France and 15 Giro d’Italia stage wins on his account. Not only has Cavendish gained credibility as a sporting icon, he also shines off the bike.

The Team will announce further arrivals and its 2016 roster in the next few days.

I’m super excited about becoming a part of the Team for 2016. It is a team that I have watched closely as it has grown, especially over this season and been really impressed with the spirit, strength and dynamics of the group. It’s fair to say that most of the peloton has seen how incredible the Team raced this year. To join it with the target of helping to win even more races with other strong, experienced household cycling names like Mark Renshaw, Edvald Boasson-Hagen, Tyler Farrar, Daniel Teklehaimanot, Steve Cummings and of course Bernie Eisel is going to be real special, as well as assisting the talent of the young, African riders to top level success. Also, for me personally, one of the biggest incentives is riding for a greater cause in the Qhubeka charity. I’m really looking forward to having a successful year on the road alongside the other guys and helping directly to get more bikes in the hands of people who need them.
Mark Cavendish – Rider
Mark Cavendish joining our Team is a huge step forward for the team as we strive to get to the next level in world cycling. To also integrate Mark Renshaw and Bernie Eisel is a game changer in terms of performance and experience, which, added to the incredible talent we already have in the team opens up many possibilities for us. We have seen how success has brought fantastic new partners to our team in Dimension Data and Deloitte and the impact that it has had on our current bike partners like Cervelo. It is even more meaningful to tie that all together to achieve bigger impact for Qhubeka, the charity we ride for. Qhubeka, provides bicycles for African schoolchildren, enabling them to conquer distance every day to get to and from school. As the team’s visibility and success has increased, we are grateful for sponsors and individuals coming alongside to support our goal to provide 5000 bicycles for African schoolchildren via the #BicyclesChangeLives campaign. We look forward to working closely with Mark and the other riders to accelerate the growth of the team’s contributions on and off the bike in 2016 and beyond.
Douglas Ryder – Team Owner
We are excited at the impact that riders of Mark Cavendish, Mark Renshaw’ and Bernie Eisel’s stature can have on lives throughout the African continent This years riders have all been great ambassadors for the team, the African cause and the charity. It would be wonderful to see this community of support grow in 2016. We hope Mark and his fans will bring their support not just to the team, but also to Qhubeka’s mission and help make a difference for African schoolchildren and families.
Anthony Fitzhenry – Founder Qhubeka
Dimension Data welcomes Mark and his fellow riders to the Team. We’re very excited to be part of the squad’s next steps on its journey to accelerate their ambitions, and look forward to helping the Team to compete at the highest levels in world cycling, both on the African continent and across the world.
Brett Dawson – Dimension Data Group CEO

Man oh man - I've never liked that big egod little bodied man.

With Louis out and a whole new sprint train (not to mention our existing team of sprinters) I reckon we'll be an Etixx Quickstep style team in 2016.

Bring on the classics!

He is getting older, and his wins rate is dropping a bit.

How many races did he win in 2014 and 2015?

I think it will be great for the team when it comes to UCI points and invites etc.

It might even better for them than keeping Maincheese on the short term.

Maincheese still has a few years before he will be a true GC contender and will need a team formed around him.

With Cav, they can win stages as of tomorrow....

Wins in 2015 - at least 10 [Edit: 13]

Wins in 2014 - Similar 10ish? [Edit: 11]

Probably down from 20 in 2013. [Edit: 17]

I'm sure he can still bag a few for the team

Also hoping the (South) African aspect not lost.

How will they send team to Tour De France with 7 African riders now.

But Excited for the team. Just Hope Jaco, Johan and some other Saffas not lost

An astute signing imo - think he has 14 wins so far this year, including stage 7 in the Tour, I guess if you win one stage in your career you are made, he has 26 to date - scary stat.

He is also quite a different rider to the young brash guy - nowadays after the win he is first seen walking back down the course to seek out and thank his team mates - he should fit in well.

You cannot compare him to the loss of Louis Meintjies - Cavendish is the real deal. Meintjies has a top 10 in the Vuelta - he is our best local hope no doubt, it may take some years still.

Well done to Doug Ryder and probably more likely Brian Smith on this one.

This is important for squad building, event invites and UCI points.

I think 2016 is going to be disappointing for our African contigent as these signings are going to be used to amass UCI points and then 2017 I would not be surprised to hear that this is a WT team. With that comes an obligation to attend every WT event and this is where I think the constant race exposure will benefit the Africans in the team who are racing 80-100 days a year with the best in the world.

He is the David Beckham of cycling and even if he has past his best he will still bring a lot of attention and exposure to the team and Qhubeka

I'm sure if he is motivated and with the support he will have from a great lead out team he will get some results

Good luck to the team !!!

It definitely reads as the best pro Continental team

Naysayers need to actually look at the fact he is a proven winner, one of the top 3 sprinters in the world, has pulled a very decent set of results this season. He is the one sprinter that everyone interviews as to why he hasn't won almost every race he enters exactly because he is so prolific.

He's actually taken a gamble on the team as well don't forget. Not World Tour, no proven train, not guarenteed invites to races that he's won before and to those he wins at least a stage in each time he enters.

It takes at least 6 months to get a sprint train anywhere near speed. Luckily he has a few team mates around from HTC, SKY and others so don't throw your toys out of the cot if he doesn't nail MSR at first go with the new team... even if they get an entry.

Come on, rather than kick the ground say what a load of *** let see it as a big thing for the team, it's a big thing for the Qhubeka movement as he's a box office personality and there will be more wins this year than last.

And if that isn't enough then we could always carry on with the wonder of Goss, Farrar, and a good couple of others that haven't exactly lived up to the pay cheques and hype.

I think all in all great news for team DD .

I just hope it is not to the detrament of some of our African talent .

However , the experience he ( and Eisel/Renshaw) bring with , bodes well for anyone in the team .

Hope to see them on S Works for 2016

I agree, a few years ago from a South African Team perspective there was nothing - now look at what we have:

A team competing in the Top Tours with some of the biggest names in cycling and a sponsor who is also involved with the TDF.

Only good things can come from this.

Better get him and Renshaw a pro-biotics sponsor as well if he's coming out here! Can't have the show pony going down with dodgy guts at the 1st training camp!  ;)
