Kevin Evans accepts doping charge

By Press Office · 1614 comments

Cycling South Africa reports that the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has charged mountain bike cyclist, Kevin Evans with doping after identifying serious irregularities in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) – a profile of the athlete’s blood parameters.

Mr. Evans accepted the charge of doping and did not contest the findings. The ABP is a longitudinal analysis and the suspicious readings were identified over a period of time, therefore the athlete’s results extending back to 14 March 2014 will be disqualified, with all of the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

He will be banned from sport for four years as of 4 March 2015 until 3 March 2019. The athlete has however indicated that he has retired from professional cycling.

Cycling South Africa respects the independence of the SAIDS process. Cycling South Africa further reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness and extensive testing programmes.

Lucky the World Tour is all clean and sorted now with clean riders winning.

I just shared my thought with a colleague....imagine these top pro's (the World Tour okes/teams) use these local riders (that also get regular testing done) as guinea pigs for their 'whats new on the market and lets see if /how long it takes to get caught' etc.... I mean isn't this ideal for a 'local racer' that is kinda not really making big bucks from local marathons to get money from the big teams to go through something like this?

Believing in clean cyclists is the same as believing in fairies and unicorns :whistling:

Just wonder how clean the riders are that beat him then??

The local guys dope to get fast, the overseas guys are fast and then they dope (well some of them)

I know of 2 a while back who were clean and if I remember correctly this was one of the reasons they stopped.

Potatoes only get you so far apparently...

“Having retired last year officially in May, I’m naturally disappointed that this has to come out subsequently, but I’m happy to take my sanction and move on. I have no desire or will to return to professional cycling, merely to focus on my business and giving back to the sport that has given me so much”.

Wait.... what is he going to give back

Not sure your one said not found

Yours worked. He doesn't say why he's not contesting though...Edit: Bottom bit of the story didn't load. Yeah, sorta confirmed what I was thinking. He stands to gain nothing from contesting it.

By not contesting them... SAIDS don't dig deeper, look further back, ask more hard questions. Not a lot of results really going back to just 2014. Plenty before that though!

SAIDS digging deeper must really be a petrifying experience filling every athlete with absolute fear.

NOT.

Just look at the pharmacist excuse used previously to squash a positive test bought hook line and sinker by SAIDS.

Doubt it. The Euro pros have the best doctors available.

The brand "Kevin Evans" means little enough to him not to defend it? I would imagine that his business will suffer as a result of this. I am always critical when cyclists are diagnosed with some weird and wonderful disease. Its like hearing about a restaurant or club that burns down and you immediately think "arson!"

I'm not even slightly surprised at this. And I don't believe all cyclists dope.

Point taken, but I do believe much of that was down to a very expensively drafted lawyers letter...

Feel for the clean pro's out there. Really difficult to get sponsors nowadays. But there is still a few rotten apples out there. Many of the fellow pro's know who they are, but nailing these guys takes way too long. They need to speed the testing process up a bit. Lawyers and Dopers

Former South African mountain bike champion Kevin Evans has said the reports of anomalies found in his biological blood passport results were due to “life-threatening circumstances and decisions doctors made to save his life”.
