Kevin Evans accepts doping charge

By Press Office · 1614 comments

Cycling South Africa reports that the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has charged mountain bike cyclist, Kevin Evans with doping after identifying serious irregularities in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) – a profile of the athlete’s blood parameters.

Mr. Evans accepted the charge of doping and did not contest the findings. The ABP is a longitudinal analysis and the suspicious readings were identified over a period of time, therefore the athlete’s results extending back to 14 March 2014 will be disqualified, with all of the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

He will be banned from sport for four years as of 4 March 2015 until 3 March 2019. The athlete has however indicated that he has retired from professional cycling.

Cycling South Africa respects the independence of the SAIDS process. Cycling South Africa further reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness and extensive testing programmes.

I wonder how long it takes the dopers to get over the fact that they got caught? if it even bothers them at all?

I know the man.

Maybe I'm defending him now when I remind all of the serious medical problems he's had over the last few years. Could be a contributing factor.

Did he also recover from bilharzia ?

Can we get back the R150k+ in prize money we have paid Kevin over the years at the Crater Cruise?

It also pissed on my chips something special seeing a few smug dopers on the podium at joBerg2c last year... The Cape Epic has the right idea!

Damn. Just when I had packed away the worlds smallest violin...

Eldron's promise (to help end doping) : if I see a doper on the podium at any race I will be yelling DOPER DOPER when their name is read out. That includes Nolan, Brandon, Kevin, David, Rourke.... Who am I missing?

It's up to us - the cycling public-to make these guys feel shitty every time they throw a leg over a bike.

Hmmmm I'm just gonna yell DOPER DOPER every time I see them .

Shock, horror, aghast indescribable feeling of......... Captain obvious!

I remember turning up for the Zuurberg mountain challenge a few years ago which Kev had won all of the times. It happened to be about 5 days after Davey George was uncovered, his racing partner at the time.

Kev was there in his tracksuit but withdrew last minute then took a couple of months away from racing with an undiagnosable blood disease or what not.

This was one waiting to happen. Retired or not, the truth will surface.

Being caught after the fact is still being caught... ask Lance...

How do our okes dope and go over to Europe and don't beat everyone? Our big races still dominated by foreign riders.

The Russians had a state sponsored program, and they won a bit, but certainly not dominating anything.

The local guys dope to get fast, the overseas guys are fast and then they dope (well some of them)

Thats the whole issue, if there were any in the past 10 years, they would be have been coming in 5th and 6th behind the dopers.

There clean riders never got the sponsorship, never got the fame, money etc. Thanks to the dopers....

I know of 2 a while back who were clean and if I remember correctly this was one of the reasons they stopped.

Devil's advocate: What would Evans have to gain by contesting the charges? What does he stand to lose by not contesting them?

Sorry I don't believe it. Because I've been told too many times here that mountain bikers don't dope - it's only the roadies.

By not contesting them... SAIDS don't dig deeper, look further back, ask more hard questions. Not a lot of results really going back to just 2014. Plenty before that though!

Exactly. And he saves himself lawyers fees. Guess he could technically still be able to say "I never tested positive..."
