Kevin Evans accepts doping charge

By Press Office · 1614 comments

Cycling South Africa reports that the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has charged mountain bike cyclist, Kevin Evans with doping after identifying serious irregularities in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) – a profile of the athlete’s blood parameters.

Mr. Evans accepted the charge of doping and did not contest the findings. The ABP is a longitudinal analysis and the suspicious readings were identified over a period of time, therefore the athlete’s results extending back to 14 March 2014 will be disqualified, with all of the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

He will be banned from sport for four years as of 4 March 2015 until 3 March 2019. The athlete has however indicated that he has retired from professional cycling.

Cycling South Africa respects the independence of the SAIDS process. Cycling South Africa further reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness and extensive testing programmes.

But isn't that what he is saying? I was denied a TUE and continued racing, it's come out now, and I have taken my sanction? Or do you want him to admit to something else?

If you're denied a TUE then dont race. I'd love to see all these affadavits saying he applied for a TUE but they denied it. Its just a BS fact that he's made up to cover his ass

If you're so sick that you need ozone treatment, then how can you even be racing.

Also, if he is not guilty, he would had of released a statement before SAIDS released their report, not after theirs. A bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

Didn't David George also open a shop in Cape Town after his ban? Maybe both shops have a partnership for some back-room "setup".

Doctors statements and explanations are required when applying for a TUE, as well as any supporting docs which include X-rays, blood tests etc.

If the TUE then still gets denied, surely SAIDS have done their due dilligence, and according to the rules and regulations decided that the Theraputic use was legitimite or not.

It is up to the cyclist to not race if there is no TUE, one can argue intent to dope if one decides to race without a TUE. Just applying for a TUE means squat, it has to be granted.

Why are we all getting so hit up about this again?

I think its because we all hoped it wasn't true.

It is.

So it means about 80 to 90% of the champions are rotten.

Its not like this is different globally and there are 10% that are the problem. We know this as a fact.

Its not like we haven't discussed this at length on the hub over the last couple of positives.

FWIW: You have to be really stupid to get caught in little old SA.

Accept the glaring truth that you are struggling with. This guy cheated. He got caught. Now he wants to try and salvage his reputation or what is left of it.

It doesn't mean he wont run a great bike shop or that he isn't a good guy.

He cheated.

That is about it

Imagine you are invited by a pro team to a training camp and by day 2 you cannot keep up cause EVERY morning the squad has "fresh legs" and are in pain. You are running the risk of being sent packing before your career can even start.....what you gonna do?
Thats pro sport simple as that. If you wanna make a career of it you have to be able to keep up with the peloton......think about ANY pro sport....even our beloved RUGBY....

Drawing attention away from things is a national sport...

In his statement he's got some pretty good excuses. If it's all true. Which it sounds like it is.

If it was 100% legit, why not disclose it? Why wait to be caught out?

I hear you.

At this point you must make the call that shows you how they are doing it - you dont fall on the syringe and then notice you are superman the next day though.

It finds you and you make the deal fully knowing what you are doing cause you see the improvement the next day.

So you know all along what you are doing.

This then gets in to the psychology side of who is liable to cheat and that is a whole other discussion.
