Introducing Bike Hub Plus

By Bike Hub Features · 255 comments

We’re excited to reveal a new premium membership offering, Bike Hub Plus. Over the last sixteen years, Bike Hub has grown and evolved. From a high-school side project to the largest digital cycling platform in South Africa. We’re humbled. And we’re excited to continue evolving in the pursuit of best serving our community.

So what is it all about? Bike Hub Plus is a paid membership program which gives you access to some exclusive benefits and, at the same time, helps to support what we do at Bike Hub. For just R39 a month or R349 annually you can become a Bike Hub Plus member.

The membership structure means we’re able to realign incentives, ensuring that the community remains at the heart of what we do.

Advertising has been a foundation at Bike Hub from the beginning and is still key to supporting our efforts to serve our community. However, balancing advertising success against user experience remains a conundrum.

As a Bike Hub Plus member, your contribution means we pull the plug on external advertising networks which supplement our revenue but offer less control over your experience and privacy on Bike Hub. So no more of those pesky, sometimes dubious adverts that follow you around the Internet. Yeah, we cringe at those too. And, if you prefer, you have the option to turn off banner adverts altogether.

As a Bike Hub Plus member, you also get access to further benefits. These include exclusive early access to the brand new Instant Search Alerts feature, a 20% discount on any paid Boosts for your Classified adverts, and, as a small nod of thanks from us, Bike Hub Plus members receive a supporters badge on their user profile.

This is just the beginning. It is new ground for us and we’re excited to go on the next leg of the journey with you. Just as Bike Hub has evolved over the sixteen years, we know Plus will continue to evolve as we extend the value offering to best serve you, our community.

You can find out more about Bike Hub Plus and sign up here.

You read/study your market's needs. By enabling comments in classified for Plus members, the subscription rate would've probably been 10 fold what it is currently.

I actually can't..

'How dare they charge me a fee for something I don't have and allow me to keep what I already have for free!!!'

The cheek of these people... honestly!

Yoh... How do some people actually function if they can't grasp the most basic principles?

What some people don't seem to grasp is that:

If you are not paying for something, then it is most likely that you yourself is the product being sold.... (Facebook, Cambridge Analytica)

So even if you aren't paying directly, you are giving something up.

Most people who are internet savy are aware that we give our data and also as part of that we get targeted ads, usually based on your last couple of internet searches.  It's the price we are prepared to pay for use of such services for free.

However, even if through a paywall, you cannot guarantee your data and information is not being used, even if you are given the option to opt out.

to all the people complaining.

I like to pay for the things that add value to my life. Bikehub adds a lot of value for me. Its social without being facebook, encourages me to exercise, connects me to likeminded people and gives me a place to vent and destress.

R350 a year to SUPPORT and ENCOURAGE a business that gives me all of that - cheap.

I also love that Admin's philosophy is not to take things away from the free users, its to add extra functionality for a price. So to all of you complaining, stop it. NOTHING has been taken away from you. Buying in is a choice.

Met all my cycling buddies through this platform.

And bought my road bike here and most of its updated parts through various deals.

Even sold a few things.

And the ongoing keyboard debates.

Worth paying for? I would like to choose.

Unfortunately Payfast only supports some local debit cards: https://www.payfast.co.za/features/payment-methods/debit-cards

Are you perhaps with FNB? It's the only major local bank not supported via debit card through Payfast.

We are looking at other payment options and will let you know soonest. Sorry to you both for the inconvenience and thank you for trying to sign up!

I don't see ads on the internet...

Maybe I have a charmed life,

Or maybe it is AdBlock Plus, networking wide DNS filtering via Pi-hole using Quad9 DNS servers with DNS filtering and ECS support running encrypted over HTTPS as an upstream DNS provider?

No offens and what I have to say is only feedback, I feel that it's annoying that you want to make more money off of people with a premium. It's a community the people created by joining, yes sure you made the website but so can a 18yr old develop a website like this????‍♂️

Admin should have sold these Armstrong bangles in the early 2000's

He could have charged a higher price between 1999 - 2005

Oh My GOLLY Gosh...

A man that employs a few people with 16 years of development in building and bringing a community together is trying to pay his bills by ASKING some of those people to voluntarily donate/invest some money in growing the idea for the good of EVERYONE (even those that choose to not pay)?

What the hell was he thinking??!?!?!?  There is a special pit in hell for people like that!!!!/s

I say let the 18 year old take him on and see how far he gets.

Yes, how dare the creators of the platform offer an optional subscription service that doesn’t impact existing non-paying users in any way. I’m also waiting for the 18 year and his website (which requires almost no time and effort to develop and maintain) to come along, so that he can also charge me whatever he likes

It’s late

Let me be reductionist:

Building a website - easy peasy

Hosting a sustainable online community - not easy peasy

Go do it. I mean, prove everybody wrong.

When you have the number of members and ads to match the Hub, I will join your website for R350 a year, pinkie promise.

On your marks, get set goooo!
