By Bike Hub Features · 69 comments

We’re excited to announce the launch of our buyer and seller protection service. Bike Hub Pay is a new payment service which offers peace of mind by allowing you to transact safely and securely.

How Bike Hub Pay Works

Buying with Bike Hub Pay

It all starts with spotting your dream bike on Bike Hub, but you might be hesitant to pull the trigger? Buying via Bike Hub Pay means your payment is held securely by us until you receive the bike.

If it does not arrive or is not what was described, no problem! Simply let us know, return the bike (if applicable) and we will refund your payment.

Selling with Bike Hub Pay

Bike Hub Pay will increase the number of potential buyers as Hubbers outside of the sellers region can now trade remotely with greater confidence. Increased demand means quicker sales and the best possible selling price. Buyers will be able to pay via EFT or Credit Card*.

Sellers, you can now enable Bike Hub Pay when listing your items for sale. All Bike Hub Pay enabled adverts are highlighted with a Pay shield. Buyers can make an offer to purchase directly from the advert page.

*Only for amounts up to R50 000, additional fees apply.

Fees

The Bike Hub Pay fee is paid by the Buyer. It is calculated as 3.9% of the offer amount with a minimum fee of R65 and maximum fee of R1,650.

Since founding in 2004, Bike Hub has become renowned as the trusted platform to buy or sell all things bicycles. The introduction of a secure payment service means we can enable a far greater level of trust between buyer and seller. More trust means successful sales and more people out there on two wheels.

Want to know more? Visit the Bike Hub Pay page to see how it works.

*Update – 4 February 2021: Minimum fee reduced from R100 to R49

*Update – 1 March 2023: Fee changed from the Seller to Buyer

*Update – 9 February 2026: Fee percentage, minimum fee, and maximum fee updated.

Awesome.

One cannot protect against lying cheating scum.

But take photos of you boxing the item to back up your sale?

The seller will also be paid already though won't he? As the payment is released upon delivery.

I don't think this is going to be a common theme though.......

Awesome.

Question : what if the buyer damages the item an then disputes the item , how is the seller protected in this regard?

It's a fair question, and although possible, we expect it won’t be a common issue.

The relatively short window for logging a dispute of this nature should limit the potential for this sort of abuse of the system.

Upon delivery of the item the buyer has 48 hours to log a dispute (e.g. item not as described, damaged, etc.). This time period is to allow them to unbox and inspect the item as if they were purchasing in-person.

Once the 48 hours have passed and no dispute is raised the deal is automatically completed and the seller will be paid out. Once a deal has been completed the buyer cannot raise a dispute.

As you suggest, it is possible that an unscrupulous buyer could damage an item and claim it arrived in that condition. To protect the seller against such issues we suggest thoroughly documenting the condition of the item and packaging with pictures/video. Similarly, if a buyer receives a damaged box we'd suggest documenting the condition before and while unboxing.

Bike Hub will review such claims and attempt to facilitate a resolution between the parties, failing which we may refer unresolvable disputes to the relevant court.

Hi Hubbers,

It's already been just over 2 months since we launched Bike Hub Pay and we're seeing growing activity. We've had a multitude of deals completed across a wide range of items. From kids bikes to high-end TT frames and carbon dual-sussers, group sets, e-bike batteries, Epic entries and more!

Our minimum fee at launch was kept relatively high at R100 to ensure our back office processes and systems were ready. We're ready and pleased to announce a reduced minimum fee.

Reduced minimum fee
On 4 February 2021 we lowered the minimum fee to just R49, making the service more accessible on lower priced items.

We're excited to continue building on the offering in 2021 to add further convenience and value.

If you've done a deal via Bike Hub Pay or have questions/feedback let us know.

I bought a bike for my wife last week (from the other side of the country) and used BikeHub Pay to facilitate the payment.  I did my homework on the seller before doing the deal, so knew who he was, where he worked, where he lived, etc and after communicating with him for a while I would have been happy to pay over the funds via EFT anyway, but it was actually really nice having the security of BikeHub Pay - I didn't need to worry about anything and it felt like I had some control when the bike arrived as well (being able to check out its condition and take it for a quick ride to confirm) before confirming everything and completing the deal.

And to not pay any fees as a buyer is great!  For me this worked really well and I'll be happy to use the system again.

Jokes aside, thanks for a great system that make it safer for buyer and seller.

Thanks for the feedback TheoG.

We're excited to see this grow and evolve as we build more convenience into the service (e.g. booking shipping).

There's a long list of ideas, updates and improvements you'll see roll out across the site in 2021

I'll wade in and state that I won't buy anything again without using this service. I've been doing business on the "good faith" model for so long, so getting my money taken from me is a real wake up call.

Got scammed this morning by some guy who called himself as Gary Bar - 079 036 5704.

BikeHub sent me an e-mail advising that I'd had dealings with a suspicious character, unfortunately it was too late and the money had already gone.

In any event, let that be a lesson for others too - use the safe systems that BikeHub have put in place.

is there any form of repercussion to those who accept bikehub pay deals then instead of shipping the items they sell them elsewhere?

i know i'll get my money back but that just poor form from the seller.

this just happen to me.

more bizarre is my offer was in line with asking price.

i'm not to bothered, its the reason i use bikehub pay. to protect me from odd balls.

i think the seller was hopelessly ignorant about how bikehub pay actually worked and no matter what i said he had no interest in actually reading up about how it worked.

i did leave a 1 star review to warm others about his manners

There is one thing I have picked up with BHP which I've been wondering about, let me paint the scenario:

  • I build a bike and post it for sale
  • Buyer comes along and requests BHP which I then accepts
  • He / She makes te payment and I proceed packing the bike and getting it collected
  • The buyer then receives said bike and starts pulling it apart, like in finds everything fault with the build and expects me to resolve everything he / she can find wrong with the bike before releasing the payment.

So my question: When does BHP actually step in and release the payment without the consent from the buyer? I get that there are lots of chancers out there that try their luck with a defective product but let's say it is little stuff like scratches or whatever is deemed par for the course of buying 2nd hand?

This is actually quite a sticking point for me, I am hesitant to use BHP solely for this reason.

We've chatted via our Help but for the benefit of the crowd:

Currently the primary repercussion is an appropriate rating on their profile (as you've done).

We do track these issues internally and repeat offenders may be suspended. e.g. sellers not honouring the deal or buyers repeatedly failing to complete payment. Thankfully it's a tiny fraction of all deals done via Bike Hub Pay, but something we're monitoring nonetheless.

As you suggest, part of the problem could simply be the seller not appreciating how the system works and the commitment implied when accepting an offer.

Thanks for sharing your concerns.

To answer your question, the only scenario where we'll release a payment without consent from the buyer is where they disappear following delivery. e.g. the courier tracking confirms delivery and after 48 hours the buyer has failed to complete the deal (or log a dispute) and is uncontactable.

There risk you highlight does remain. It's not impossible that a difficult buyer may nit-pick in an attempt to either drive the price down or make unreasonable requests.

It's important to note that a seller is under no obligation to remedy issues raised by a buyer (e.g. price reduction / part replacement). If the buyer is not happy and the seller is unwilling or unable to address the issues, we'll facilitate a return and refund, but the cost of return shipping is for the buyer's account.

While we know that given enough time and scale this will change, in close on 2,000 deals completed to date at R20million in value we've not encountered buyers of this nature.
