It took a photo finish to separate the stage winner Rigoberto Urán from the last survivor of the early breakaway Warren Barguil. Chris Froome finished with the lead pack of climbers putting significant time into the hopes of Nairo Quintana and Alberto Contador.
Unfortunately, the stage also saw Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas withdraw from the race after crashes. The stage was not without controversy with Fabio Aru attacking directly after race leader Froome suffered a mechanical.
