Peter Sagan, along with a small group of riders, escaped the crashes to contest a sprint finish on stage 2. Sagan fought off a late surge from Sonny Colbrelli to claim victory and put himself into the yellow jersey. Frenchman Arnaud Demaré claimed third place.
