Sunday 28 May saw the second round of the Eliminator Series for Western Cape take place at Contermanskloof MTB Trails in Durbanville.
Eliminator is a short course heat racing format of mountain biking whereby riders race four at a time across a track (roughly 800m) being tested on their speed, power and bike handling skills. The top two finishers advance to the next round whilst the bottom two finishers are eliminated from the event. Basically it is everything you need for a cross country or marathon race condensed into a minute and a half leg burning sprint.
Many riders despite having been to Contermanskloof a number of times were unaware of the track which farm owner Rob Starke had built behind The Dairy Shed some time ago. There was a wide rough climb just after the start which allowed riders to jostle for position before entering the play section of berms and table top jumps. With the light overnight rainfall the track was in perfect conditions for what would be a fantastic day of racing from all divisions with riders pushing themselves to their limits to get across the finish line first. The racing was possibly overshadowed by the enthusiasm of parents and spectators on the sidelines as they vigorously cheered for the riders whilst they charged around the course.
Once again, the junior age divisions made up the bulk of the entrants, however the addition of the Open and 40+ divisions are starting to gain traction with a handful of dads showing that there is still plenty of watts being generated in their legs! To end off the day a spontaneous final race was made up, a race that regardless of the result may not have ended well: Fathers vs Sons – two laps of the course. Not to bruise anyones egos we said we wouldn’t publish the results however there may be a few kids who aren’t receiving pocket money this month!
As with every event, it would not be possible without the support of sponsors and the Eliminator Series has fantastic partners who shower the competitors in amazing product: Red Bull, Giant Bicycles, Skullcandy, OGIO, Fox Racing, Race Pace Sportswear and Yesman Branding.
The Eliminator Series is now moving onto KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng in June before visiting Bloemfontein and the Garden Route for the first time in July! Entries are open for all the provinces with the KwaZulu Natal entries closing until Friday 9 June 2017 at 12pm.
