Here in the Western Cape, we are spoilt with an ever-expanding mountain bike trail network. When we got our hands on the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, the latest all-electric SUV from Mercedes-Benz,  it made perfect sense to take an e-bike excursion through the picturesque Stellenbosch winelands.

We collected our Specialized Turbo Levo Comp rental bikes from the Specialized Stellenbosch Experience Centre at Blaauwklippen and headed to Ernie Els Wines to ride the trails and sample the coffee at their newest venue, the Chilli Shed.

The Ernie Els trails are part of the Winelands South Trail Network, which connects 180 kilometres of trails across Somerset West and Stellenbosch. This network includes Avontuur, Faure, Dornier, Ernie Els, Helderberg Farm, Spier Wine Estate, Somerbosch, and Stellenzicht. You can learn more and buy day permits here.

After a quick bike introduction and rider setup at the Experience Centre, we loaded up and headed to Ernie Els. The Winelands South trails include some steep, punchy climbs, making e-bikes a very welcome choice.

The trail at Ernie Els Wines starts at the Restaurant and follow farm roads that wind through the vineyards before leading to a challenging singletrack climb up to the weather station. From the top, we had panoramic views of the surrounding farms and valleys, and could even see Table Mountain and Cape Point in the distance.

The descent winds through a series of switchbacks, leading into an indigenous wild olive forest and over sweeping granite rock slabs. There’s an easier detour if needed. At the bottom, you can either return to the restaurant or continue into the Alto Valley for a climb back up through the forest

From here, another sweeping singletrack descent leads you back to Ernie Els Wines, and we headed straight for coffee at the Chilli Shed.

The main loop spans 8km, but it connects to the Winelands South network, offering extended routes from 30km to 60km. We highly recommend heading up to Stellenzicht for a monumental flow trail that winds down into the valley, ending at the Stellenzicht Wine Pod. From there, the route crosses Blaauwklippen Road into the Dornier trails, which climb up Stellenbosch Mountain before dropping into a smooth singletrack back to the starting point.

The Chilli Shed is nestled in a hidden corner of the Ernie Els Wines farm, and serves up delicious Deluxe coffee, and a simple range of pastries. Ideal for a quick caffeine hit mid-ride.
