If your idea of a long weekend is sharp singletrack, wild bushveld views and an atmosphere that’s more celebration than suffer-fest, then the Waterberg Traverse should be on your radar. Scheduled from 1–3 May 2026, the event returns to the spectacular Summerplace Game Reserve in the heart of Limpopo’s Waterberg for three days of mountain bike bliss.

Set against a backdrop of rolling bushveld, flowing singletrack and jaw-dropping views, the Waterberg Traverse isn’t just about racking up kilometres — it’s an experience. The trails open the door to abundant wildlife sightings and expansive views that will have you looking up from your handlebars as often as down at your tyres.

Route Summary

The Waterberg Traverse offers two options to suit different riding styles — a Ride category for those after a relaxed adventure and a Race category for those wanting a bigger challenge. Stage distances vary each day:

Stage 1
• Ride: approx. 38 km with ~590 m ascent
• Race: approx. 55 km with ~830 m ascent
This stage starts with a climb to a scenic viewpoint, flowing through winding singletrack and rewarding riders with long descents and fun singletrack across the reserve.

Stage 2
• Ride: approx. 41 km with ~650 m ascent
• Race: approx. 60 km with ~1 275 m ascent
Riders climb early before enjoying fast, engaging descents and sections of technical singletrack, including features through ancient riverbeds and scenic bushveld.

Stage 3
• Ride: approx. 42 km with ~575 m ascent
• Race: approx. 52 km with ~700 m ascent
The final leg offers flowing trails and scenic loops through the bush, with wildlife sightings and mellow terrain to round out the event.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best in the Race category or simply enjoying three days on your bike with friends, every stage showcases the best of Summerplace’s trail network.

But if the riding is the heart of the Waterberg Traverse, then the vibes are its soul. Forget cut-throat competition — this is a social weekend on two wheels. Each evening wraps up with good food, trail stories and the chance to connect with fellow riders who came for the trails and stayed for the spoils. Prize givings, chill zones and hearty dinners around the race village make it feel more like a festival than a race.

For many riders, the best part isn’t crossing the final finish line — it’s the shared moments between stages: swapping trail tales, watching wildlife wander past the route and soaking up that deep sense of satisfaction that only three days in nature can bring. It’s a reminder that mountain biking isn’t just a sport — it’s an adventure.
