Barberton XCM, conquer the toughest one yet

By Press Office · 13 comments

This popular race is still going strong, 21 years strong. The Barberton XCM is known to be one of the toughest mountain bike race in the country. With a variety of landscapes and terrain, you are sure to get a bit of everything. The race, which attracts about 1,500 cyclists from various provinces and countries and of all shapes and sizes, still manages to keep the feel of a small race, but with all the benefits of the bigger races such as prizes, water points and great route markers. The 21st annual Barberton XCM takes place on 28 January 2017.

We all love a challenge, but let me tell you, Ultra marathon riders are in for a treat – that’s if you spent the festive season in the saddle. The organisers decided to treat the riders with 25% more elevation then the previous years, yes… that means that your total ascent will be over 3,000m, you will be climbing a mountain – literally! No one said it would be easy, however, we know it will be worth it! The Ultra is not only for male cyclists, ladies (or should we say tough koekies) competing in the Elite category will also be able to win prizes. Like if that isn’t enough, the President of the Barberton Rotary Club, George Pearse, was excited to announce that riders who pre entered the Ultra marathon will be able to take their Cape Epic training to the next level with a FREE pre ride on the Friday prior to the race (27 January) and a post ride on the Sunday following the race (29 January). More information regarding the rides is available on the website.

If you are not on the Ultra rider level yet there is still a very delicate 20km and 30km and the not so delicate 48km and 77km – you choose. The Barberton Nursery School will host a Mini MTB Challenge for children between 2 and 12 years! Bring all the bikes – we are going to have some fun!

By supporting the race you are supporting charity, as all the monies raised are utilised for a variety of charity projects in and around Barberton – every little bit counts and helps someone in need.

For more information regarding the race visit www.barbertonxcm.co.za. Enter online, at www.cycleevents.co.za – pre entries close on 24 January.

I started cycling last year August and got roped into doing the Ultra in January.  This is best race experiences I have ever had.  It was really tough, but with the amazing views, water points and hospitality this little town offers.  I would come back year after year.

One of the toughest, best organised, most scenic races on the MTB calendar. I'll be back for more in 2017.

I did the marathon on 2 X10, it was not that bad until I had a puncture. This year I'm doing it on 1X11. So the traininng has started.

So my low gear is going from a 26:36 to a 32:42. So my low ratio is going from 0.72 to 0.76

I think it's close enough to be ok :D

Guys remember that the Ultra will be back to old route and not the jolly it was last year. That means 3000m ascent.
