Adverse analytical finding in recent mountain bike stage race

By Matt · 878 comments

Cycling SA received notification from the UCI (International Cycling Union) of an adverse analytical finding from a sample provided by Barry Warmback on 18 March 2013 at the Absa Cape Epic.

The analytical report confirmed the presence of the steroid, Stanozolol in his sample. Barry is therefore provisionally suspended with immediate effect from competing in any event. The SAIDS (South African Institute of Drug-free Sport) process will now take its course.

Cycling SA reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with the UCI and SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness programmes and extensive testing.

That oke weighs 120kg. What is a bit of Bioplus going to do for him, really? He probably took it just to have the energy to get out of bed!

Like I said.

No accidental ingestion, cocked up prescription etc. Take one look at the photo and it is obvious he is a gym boy, not a cyclist.

He knew what it was, he's probably used it in the gym on a regular basis.

He took it thinking he wouldn't be tested, and now he has been caught.

Too late to cry, he should be banned like anyone else.

Hi Tim, I know it's cheating. I'm saying let's apply the same rules across all disciplines of cycling. This must happen from the top down. Either the federation or SASCOC or Drug Free or someone prescribes the rules. Not different rules for different races. Either we test everybody, licence or not or the rules are clear that it's only licenced riders or whatever the rules say. I have heard cyclists say, "I don't have to be tested...". If I have a day licence and someone pulls me out of Z bunch you bet your ass I don't have to pee. So let the rule be the same across the board. that's all.

Dopers have no place in out sport!!

The fact that he got caught & faces sanction if found quilty will hopefully discourage other recreational cyclist from attempting same.

The question remains, did he not dope, would he have been able to finish the event?

I do however wonder why a limited resource would be utilised on a 'middle/back marker' rather than focusing on the sharp end of the field where doping has a more profound effect on those that don't....

It's most probably in the rules that you have to submit yourself to testing.

To the Epic riders, were the tests urine or blood?

another doper. every non-cyclist thinks we all dope and jump red lights anyways, so how can it be any worse for the image of this sport?

From the Epic Results page:

It probably doesn't make a difference whether he gets banned or not, but if someone knowingly cheats that person should be banned! I don't know how much of a difference these types of drugs makes, but if I train my butt of for 6-12 months, I wouldn't like it if someone beats me because of drugs and not because of better preparation, whether I come in second or 1,000th!

Sucks to be Barry, although if that is a genuine profile pic, it doesn't look like his stanozolol came in bioplus format.

Still does seem like a waste of cash to test guys who are not even in the top 100.

Doesn't look like the kinda guy one takes seriously.

I don't like judging people on looks...but really...

Damn, I am sorry the hub is broken, but I wish the thread about tattoos and people's reaction to it were still alive. If I recall correctly the general consensus was that people dont and should not judge according to body art. Seems that all of that was just hocus pocus, because my initial reaction was exactly like yours! So who else is guitly?

Perhaps a bit of tactical nous from the Epic testing team. "Guys, lets pop this gym bunny backmarker with a 'random' sample, and we can send a message to the whole field that we are serious about this drugs thing".

But, but, then they would've targetted the celeb rugger players too, no?

What an idiot. It's bad enough when podium contenders think they can get away with it, now the backmarkers are doing the same. It's pathetic.

Whoa there! He probably did not even know whatever he was using contained an illegal substance according to the UCI. How many of the Cape Epic entrants have any idea what they may use. Professional cyclists has somebody checking that for them. A mid-pack guy does not. Why the hell would the UCI want to test a cyclist that is nowhere in contention for a place on the podium.
