2020 Cape Epic Cancelled

Supplied by Cape Epic.

By Press Office · 221 comments

Out of concern for the health and safety of our riders and other stakeholders, following recent advice received from the Western Cape Government, we have no choice but to cancel the 2020 Absa Cape Epic due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

Mediclinic, the event’s medical partner since inception and which provides services to many Western Cape events, supports the decision. The decision also has the full support of most of our sponsors, including our headline sponsor, Absa.

The event was due to start on Sunday March 15 on Table Mountain and end on March 22 in Paarl after travelling to Ceres, Tulbagh and Wellington.

I have taken this step with a heavy heart, but the health and safety of everybody involved in the event has to be paramount. At 6pm today we received the formal advice from government.
Race founder, Kevin Vermaak

Kevin appealed for patience from all stakeholders, who will be contacted directly regarding the way forward.

Bumped into a few Epic boys at Tokai on Saturday and yesterday at Bootleggers in Camps. They all seemed in fairly good spirits all thing's considered.

I'm supposed to be doing Sani in May and a France trip in June. Pretty sure both won't be happening.

Sounds like you bumped into my Chaingang mates from the UK. They're having an interesting trip. Had to evacuate their accommodation last night due to the fire

Yes. White tops with chaingang written on them.

Yip that's them.

They're keeping the brave face on though. Gavin has had some rotten luck wrt to the Epic. Last year he crashed coming down Groenlandberg so only rode 3.5 days of the race. This year he doesn't get to ride. Paid for two events and no finish yet. They're off to Stellies today for the week to go and enjoy some wine and trails in that order :)

Hope they reverse the order.

I just love how okes are still going to pubs and malls and restaurants......

Incredible that we put pressure on events to cancel, then go the pub the same night.....

hahahaha I am blown away by the flippancy or just sheer idiocy of some.

Schools closed so parents pack their kids up to go to the movies or MaccyD's play pens etc...

Event canceled? Pffft..... lets all go to the pub together! Booya!

If I was here touring I would board the soonest plane I could and go home. If South Africa infection rates explode (as is likely), you might just be stuck where you are for a really long time.

Don't worry.. It's a world wide problem. We're meant to be in isolation and kids are having Corona parties and parents are arranging play dates, or even worse, sending them to grannies to be minded

Or when you relentlessly bemoan the Epic for putting pros at risk, then take the same pro Epic riders on a group coffee ride....

I was wondering if planes were flying with 90 passengers on?

2 x pilots, 5 x cabin crew < 100.......

They could have insurance in case the Government forces them to cancel. It could be tricky seeing that the "ban" on mass events only came into effect last night and they cancelled on Friday.

They met with council on Friday and was cancelled during that meeting.

Is all Epic Entries sponsored or does individuals take r80k to r100k out of their OWN bank account to do a race?

We pay for an entry out of our own pockets, only pros are sponsored and maybe some riders got sponsored from their companies.

The entry fee is HALF of the total cost involved!

We really hope for at least an entry for 2021!

You are in a very fortunate position to be able to afford such a large entry fee on your own.

What about riders that were sponsored? Can the sponsors lay a claim for a refund from the riders?

You pose a good question. Because it won't happen now but later when the dust has settled and the 20/20 hindsight might say maybe it shouldn't have been cancelled then the chancers will try their nobishism and attempt sponsorship recover.

People have shown this week that they are always willing to lower the bar and start digging

If someone had sponsored me the entry and I would 100% return whatever comes from the issue to them. If that is cash or a rolled over entry, it is theirs to do with what they please.

Just asking a question. I am too poor to sponser anybody for Cape Epic, nevermind myself.

Certainly if the entry or money was returned I would hand it back to the sponsor. I don't think that's what Moridin was asking though. I interpret his question as will sponsors recover their loss from the riders they sponsored.

in that case I think its a great question.

if the entry is carried over to 2021 or the entry fee is returned then I don't think the riders would even know unless the sponsor wants the rider to returm for 2021. In most sponsored cases the sponsor pays the Cape epic for the entry directly so if the entry fee is refunded it will go back to the payer is how I understand it
