2020 Cape Epic Cancelled

Supplied by Cape Epic.

By Press Office · 221 comments

Out of concern for the health and safety of our riders and other stakeholders, following recent advice received from the Western Cape Government, we have no choice but to cancel the 2020 Absa Cape Epic due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

Mediclinic, the event’s medical partner since inception and which provides services to many Western Cape events, supports the decision. The decision also has the full support of most of our sponsors, including our headline sponsor, Absa.

The event was due to start on Sunday March 15 on Table Mountain and end on March 22 in Paarl after travelling to Ceres, Tulbagh and Wellington.

I have taken this step with a heavy heart, but the health and safety of everybody involved in the event has to be paramount. At 6pm today we received the formal advice from government.
Race founder, Kevin Vermaak

Kevin appealed for patience from all stakeholders, who will be contacted directly regarding the way forward.

Which begs the question if it is wise to proceed with these rides ...

Unlike a cruise ship ... once these rides are done the riders go home and potentially spread the virus ....

Going ahead with this when the rest of the sporting world cancels events borders on irresponsible ...

I wonder if social distancing on the ride might not mitigate the risk. No slip streaming and watch that snot rocket.

Got to wonder if Ironman as a company are going to be able to pull through all of this lost income from all the cancelled events this year.

200 million dollars debt in 2019 and 2020 not going to help them lessen that

But last week 30000 riders rode the CTCT .They could have cancelled the foreign riders and let the saffas ride  .

With an extrapolating contagious virus last week could have been like last year... Things are changing daily.. Plus.. There's a big difference between one day and 7 days off people living in close proximity and using the same toilets and showers

And, this is not last week.

I'm not usually sorry for anyone riding the Epic, pro or hack, they are such a tough lot that they don't need my sympathy, but this time I truly feel for them. It must be a terrible blow after putting in so much effort and time. The money is nothing by comparison to the emotional investment. I hope you all feel better soon (and not get sick, of course).

Listening to the President's announcement it is clear why this event was cancelled. Remember the quote "in consultation with government" now we know how that went down. Just imagine if it was cancelled after the first stage.

Just clarifying, you have knowledge that a confirmed Corona car was going to be riding/attending epic?

Epic used to enjoy a big cash injection the Monday after stage 8 by seeking entries to next year, historically could then pay the suppliers current invoices.

Don't think they will get many entries for 2021 epic right now, could be a huge issue for them if the margins are tight

They could have insurance in case the Government forces them to cancel. It could be tricky seeing that the "ban" on mass events only came into effect last night and they cancelled on Friday.

Any sport or recreational event is guided by the Sport and recreational event act. An event like the Epic will have a command centre consisting of Epic organizers, local authorities, Saps, medical teams , disaster management etc etc. That is ultimately the people that will make the decision based on the current situation within the frame of the Act.

Bumped into a few Epic boys at Tokai on Saturday and yesterday at Bootleggers in Camps. They all seemed in fairly good spirits all thing's considered.

I'm supposed to be doing Sani in May and a France trip in June. Pretty sure both won't be happening.

i bumped into john smit at forries friday night.

he was doing his best to be chipper, and is constantly approached by random people -  the st patricks edition Guiness flowing seemed to be his coping mechanism.

I would be curious to know how many big events would have this kind of insurance. My gut feel is that it is not as common as hubbers imagine. I know of at least 2 large events (not the Epic) that cancelled that incurred big losses and also weren't insured against this kind of thing.

confirmed means official so no it's not official but the source is reliable. I was contacted and asked if I was riding the ACE.

The reason for the question was as I described. This came from a medical practitioner. So clearly there is a network amongst them where they are communicating and sharing information to manage risk
