2017 Absa Cape Epic sees strongest field yet

By Press Office · 21 comments

Both the men’s reigning Olympic champions, a Tour de France winner, a host of world champions and several previous Absa Cape Epic winners will be in the South African stage race’s strongest field yet when it kicks off on Sunday.

And the racing is going to be fiercer than ever, according to the top competitors at a press conference in Cape Town on Thursday.

“There are 10 teams that can win it,” said defending champion Karl Platt of the star-studded Men’s Category field. The German, who has won the event five times, will be defending the title with Swiss partner Urs Huber (Team Bulls).

“This year will be really exciting and more competitive than ever before,” said 2014 winner Kristian Hynek of the Czech Republic, who will be racing with Austrian Alban Lakata (Topeak Ergon). “There will be many teams trying to win.”

And the other five-time winner, Christoph Sauser of Switzerland, said “this year there is definitely the most depth … especially with so many teams having back ups”. Sauser returns to the race from a brief retirement and will be racing with former Olympic gold medallist and world champion Jaroslav Kulhavy (Investec Songo Specialized) of the Czech Republic.

As Sauser suggested, this year also sees the most back up teams ever in the race – seven teams will have support teams in the field who are on hand to help with spare parts off their bikes or to help fix mechanical problems.

Lining up alongside the former winners will be reigning Olympic gold medallist Nino Schurter of Switzerland, riding with countryman Matthias Stirnemann (Scott-SRAM). Schurter said he and his teammate were mainly in South Africa to gain experience for an attempted win in 2018, but “if we are in a good place (during the race) then for sure we will go for it”.

Former Tour de France winner Cadel Evans of Australia will be taking part in the Cape Epic for the first time but has retired from competitive racing and will “take it as it comes … I’ve always wanted to do the Absa Cape Epic but have no idea what we are in for”.

He and BMC Absa Racing Team partner George Hincapie of the USA – another Tour de France veteran – are “in it for the adventure”, said Evans at the press conference.

The women’s race is also shaping up to be a thriller, with two teams probably slight favourites.

Defending champion Ariane Lüthi of Switzerland has a new partner in German Adelheid Morath (Spur) this year after winning the last three events with Dane Annika Langvad.

“Like all the strong women on the start line we are going for the victory,” said Morath. “I am going for it 100%.”

In spite of her Cape Epic successes, Lüthi said she was “feeling more pressure seeing how Adelheid is riding. She goes so fast on the uphill … gravity doesn’t pull on her”.

Multiple South African champion Robyn de Groot has teamed up with German legend Sabine Spitz (Ascendis Health), herself a former Olympic gold medallist, and they should make for a powerful combination.

Spitz said she had got a taste of the Absa Cape Epic in her first race last year and was looking forward to the challenge. “The course looks tougher than last year and the stages are longer,” said the German.

Also in the field will be 22-year-old Olympic champion Jenny Rissveds of Sweden, who will be riding in the Mixed Category with her Scott-SRAM Next Level team manager Thomas Frischknecht.

She stressed however that she was riding this year more “to get experience for the future … I really have no idea what to expect”.

The Absa Cape Epic starts with a prologue at Meerendal Wine Estate on Sunday and finishes the following Sunday at Val de Vie Estate in Franchhoek after stages in and around Hermanus, Greyton and Elgin.

Has the Epic relaxed its stance on those individuals who have been found to have doped in the past?

George Hincapie comes to mind.

I'm not a roadie but I doubt there's been someone on the start line of the Epic with a palmares comparable to that of Rodriquez. Yup, they're all on the skinny wheels, but it still makes for impressive reading. (and yes I know Cuddles has the one Tour). I don't see them contesting for the leaders jersey or even a podium but I'm looking forward to seeing them race.

Susi and Yaro must be the favorites. Yaro must be the strongest guy there... except for the fact there's someone in the field that has ridden Yaro off his wheel at most races they rode together last year. I know it's not the same, but if it's happened once... The question is can Stirneman keep up.

Rodriquez has a VERY impressive CV. But interestingly he and Hermida will be starting in the second batch (not with the UCI pros). This is as a result of Purito's early return from retirement.

The UCI requires returning Pros to be in the testing pool for 6 months before they can race in the UCI cats.

Hermida joked at the presser yesterday that all they need to do is chase the Elites, make up 5 minutes and then they'll win the stage and grab a 5 minute lead. Joking, but not really joking I think...

Will be great to watch.

Cadel on the other hand was very pragmatic. This will be George's second ever mountain bike race and he himself said he's not quite sure what they're in for. No doubt their competitive fires will light up pretty quickly though.

Hincapie was bust before they imposed there rule and it does not apply retrospectively - if you were bust and sanctioned before Jan 1, 2013, you can ride once you ban is over. Anything after that and it is a lifetime ban

What a team they will make .. purely because they are both chilled funny guys.. I hope they blog about it, will make for very entertaining reading. [emoji106]

Saw some videos of Purito on the mtb.. very capable on the technical stuff.. and I am thinking our hills won't bug him at all..Hermida will have to hold on for dear life..

I listened to the Armstrong podcast when he chatted to Hincapie, Van de velde and Dylan Casey. (I know, probably not the best admission to make on a Friday) They said there that George has been training more than some of the pros on his team. Apparently he's been putting in 24 hour weeks in the lead up. They're not just coming for the scenery.

Stirnemann is ranked six in the world for cross country and Schurter said at the press conference yesterday that he sometimes "kicks my ass". But he also said they were on a fact-finding mission and would be back to try win it next year

What testing pool? The only MTBrs I see in the testing pool are Kulhavy, Nino and Hermida. Wonder how the rest of these guys are tested on the whereabouts program?

I've listened to the podcast twice already. (Hey, it's Friday!) He only mentions that he's riding Epic, not much more. It's a really cool podcast about them "dark" postal years though.

When did MTBsaiklist get bust?

He was doing it like a sports suppliment salesman at Dischem, not for riding any faster or to contend for the podium. His story was legit in my eyes, met him at 3 Towers... Good oke

I think the lifetime ban does apply to him as it was after the said date.

Me still wonders if he had to pay a fine and if he paid it. I would have told them people to piss off.
