When you dream of racing an Ironman, but have yet to even start a Tinman, you're best served by a bike that is appropriate for a beginner but aspires to greatness. The BMC Timemachine TM02 105 Bike is that ride.
The big reason is the mix of a cutting-edge aero frameset with a component build that is firmly value-oriented. The frame itself comes out of the same mold as the TM01, so you're benefiting from a world-beating design that has trounced the competition everywhere from the Tour to the Ironman. The difference is lower-modulus carbon. Then they swapped out the complicated bayonet fork and integrated stem for a conventional fork and stem. While there is a loss in aerodynamics, fit options and brake choices expand thanks to the 1 1/8" steerer and the traditional fork crown brake mount, and travel gets easier.
The TM02 has the same subA and P2P technologies as the TM01. SubA is about minimizing frontal area. Notice how the tubes are flattened and lengthened to minimize what the wind can find. The dimensions still fit within the UCI's mandated 3-to-1 aspect ration, but act as much longer foils, thanks to the tripwires built into the leading edges. P2P, position 2 perform, is about the adjustability afforded to the rider. The aero BMC seat post has an adjustable clamp that can be set as far back as 21mm behind the bottom bracket and as far forward as 21mm forward. Wherever you position falls on the spectrum, you can make that form happen on this frame. And with the long-railed Fizik Arione Tri2 saddle, you’ll have even more flexibility as well as plenty of cushion on the nose.
The bike features eleven-speed Shimano 105 5800 components. With the 53/39 four-arm crank and 11-28 eleven-speed cassette, the Dura-Ace 9000 bar-end shifters can shift through 22 speeds. And the great thing about 5800 is all the components have been built to mimic the latest Dura-Ace in terms of function, from the new dual-pivot front brake with better modulation, to the front derailleur lever arm which makes shifting lighter and faster, to the widened cage plates on the rear derailleur to reduce torsional force losses.
The wheels here, the Shimano WH-RS010's are no-nonsense training wheels shod in 23mm Continental Ultra Sport 2 folding tires. They're a great first wheelset as you'll be spending most of your time training.
As mentioned above, this bike aspires to greatness. At this price, anyone can start on it, and upgrade when ready. Wheels are obvious, and all wide-rimmed deep-dish and discs will fit. But with Dual Transmission Integration, you can upgrade to electronic shifting. With the BB30 bottom bracket, a common choice for time trial bikes thanks the narrowness of the shell, you can find plenty of aero cranks that will shave off more drag.
The BMC Timemachine TM02 105 Bike enters you in a sweepstakes where your legs hold the winning number.
