Wahoo rolls out new KICKR ROLLR smart trainer

Press Release

By Bike Hub Features · 14 comments

Choosing between the natural ride feel of rollers and the performance advantages of a smart trainer just got easier. Today Wahoo announced the release of the KICKR ROLLR smart trainer, boasting a dual roller-based design and an impressive set of features that make it a compelling indoor training option for those who want the convenience and natural ride feel of rollers with the benefits of controlled resistance and connectivity.

KICKR ROLLR takes the traditional roller design, which has been the mainstay of indoor training since the golden days of cycling, and reimagines it. Designed to accommodate a wide range of frame and tire sizes via a quick-release adjustable wheelbase clamp, KICKR ROLLR makes it easy to take bikes on and off, making it ideal for those athletes who want to quickly transition from indoor training to riding outside, as well as for households where multiple riders use the same trainer. And because you don’t have to remove the rear wheel, KICKR ROLLR makes the ideal warm- up platform before events or big training sessions. This is especially useful for track cyclists or professionals who may not be able to make changes to their equipment after pre-race bike checks.

Learning how to ride traditional rollers typically involves a steep learning curve. KICKR ROLLR allows even the most balance-challenged cyclists to experience the natural ride feel of rollers, thanks to the innovative Safety Tire Gripper, which secures the front wheel on bikes with tires up to 2.1” / 53mm. This makes getting on and off the bike surprisingly easy, while also providing a stable platform for even the biggest out-of-the-saddle efforts.

“KICKR ROLLR gives endurance athletes a convenient, versatile, and feature-packed option to train indoors or get ready for an event,” said Wahoo KICKR Product Manager Tyler Harris. “The ability to easily take your bike on and off the trainer while enjoying the singular ride feel of rollers really sets KICKR ROLLR apart.”

To provide accurate power measurement and smart trainer control, KICKR ROLLR seamlessly connects to bike-mounted ANT+ power meters. For those athletes who don’t yet have a power meter, Wahoo is offering a bundle that includes both the KICKR ROLLR and the Wahoo SPEEDPLAY POWRLINK ZERO single-sided, pedal-based power meter. The bundled ROLLR and POWRLINK option gives endurance athletes a convenient and cost-effective way to get the full benefits of training with power, both indoor and out on the road. For those athletes who already have a power meter, the standalone KICKR ROLLR represents a great value, providing the connectivity of a smart trainer, the convenience and singular ride feel of rollers, and the stability and safety features that only Wahoo offers.

KICKR ROLLR has an MSRP of R15 999 or R 23 999 bundled with the SPEEDPLAY POWRLINK ZERO single-sided power meter and is available at WahooFitness.co.za or through authorised Wahoo retailers.

Very Cool. Been waiting for a company like Wahoo to do a Smart Roller Trainer.

Looking forward to the real-world feedback on these.

16k for something without power is a bit ridiculous though.

What is the point?

I use Elite Smart Rollers. One of the huge benefits is that it forces you activate your core and improve your pedal stroke.

This is the same as clipping your bike into a conventional Kickr.

Once I switched to full rollers my pedal stroke improved dramatically.

After watching this review and the one from the Lama Lab, I'm a little bit "meh".

Price point needed to be lower to really make sense for many people. The bouncing that DCRainmaker experienced after sprints is concerning.

Personally, I'd still go with a Kickr with an old 26er mounter permanently to the trainer.

This is no different to being on a fluid trainer and having a power meter.... and much cheaper!!

am I the only one feeling like they completely missed the entire point with these "rollers" you can just as well buy the snap because it is cheaper and gives power. Your front wheel is still stuck in one place and the whole idea of traditional rollers is that you balance and use your core etc. If im missing the point then please inform me

I think their target market is someone with a power meter that is looking for a smart trainer that does not require removing wheels and only takes a few seconds to fit or remove the complete bike. Great idea, but definitely overpriced seeing that it does not supply power. Also, a snap + plus cheap trainer bike will most likely cost the same.

Also, if you're brand loyal, you'll buy it 😂

Its still a roller that can connect to your PM and headunit at a race as a warmup tool. It has the advantage of supporting a rider who is not comfortable with using a roller unaided. The big fail is that it does not appear to have a motor generator unit so to produce resistance it needs to be plugged in.

Its probably ideal for someone who only wants one trainer that can be used at an event as a warmup tool and as a smart trainer at home which is what the Tacx Neo achieves with its motor generator unit.

another miss is its not MTB compatible :(

The unit apparently can’t fold up nice and compact so even travelling with it, will be a challenge.

There are bigger problems if you're THAT serious a cyclist that you need a set of rollers at an event but you're not comfortable on a set of conventional rollers
