The Automobile Association (AA) will once again support riders of the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg by providing essential services along the race’s route.
“Mobility is not just driving in a car or using public transport; anyone who is moving from one point to another for whatever reason, using whatever mode of transport, is a road user. As an Association we care about all road users, and about ensuring their safety, so it makes sense for us to be involved in the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg and play our role in making everyone safe. We’re excited about being part of such a big event and making it enjoyable for everyone,” says Willem Groenewald, AA CEO.
Race Organiser, Fritz Pienaar, says he is thrilled at the AA’s involvement.
“Having the AA there will make a difference to the riders and their supporters. It’s great to have a team on-board who understand cycling and the needs of the riders. Not only will they ensure any bicycles in their care are well looked after, but the AA Angels will also have a huge impact on riders at the back of the field. I am delighted to have the AA with us, and I’m sure the Association’s involvement again this year is going to contribute to an amazing day for everyone.”
“A key element for us at this year’s ride is the presence of the AA Angels. We are driven by an overarching theme of caring for the people of South Africa and the AA Angels are a tangible demonstration of that; they will stand by those at the back of the field and provide as much assistance to them as they can,” notes Willem.
The Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg takes place on Sunday, 20 November. On race day, the AA will:
• Provide back-up vehicles for riders. This makes it easier for Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg riders to get fit and ready for the race, and provides peace-of-mind to riders on the day that they’ll be taken care of in case of emergencies
• Introduce the AA Angels who will ride with the last groups of starters and motivate and assist them along the way to ensure they get across the line before the cut-off times
• Provide 25 modified AA flatbed towing vehicles with cycle racks to collect and transport bicycles which can no longer ride back to the Start/Finish venue, and,
• Host a vibe zone at Zoo Lake Park to motivate riders and entertain supporters. The vibe zone at Zoo Lake will feature a stage with live entertainment, cheerleaders who encourage riders and supporters, and a photo booth for people to record their experience on the day.
The AA will also be exhibiting at the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg Lifestyle Expo at FNB Stadium from 17-19 November. Here, riders will be given more information on how to summon assistance from one of the AA’s vehicles on the route if they need it during the race.
“We’ve thought of everything we can do to make all the riders feel safe and to assist where needed. While we can’t help with sore legs, we’ll certainly be there for sore bicycles, and ensure they’re well looked after,” says Willem.
