Video: Where We Ride – The Spruit

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 53 comments

A short video showing the fun side of the Braamfontein Spruit and why we ride it. Probably the most debated public area in South Africa. Open to the public and used by families, runners, dogs and cyclists it can get quite busy at times with tensions running high. We are all very lucky to have such an awesome trail/park in the middle of JHB. Great singletrack through the heart of (Jozi) Johannesburg.

Thanks to my friends for helping film and make the video, to the Spruit Fairies for maintaining the trails & to Majozi for the use of his song.

Cool video, it puts into perspective how slowly I ride those same trails

Hahaaa that was exactly what I was thinking... It looks so different when you're going slow - one day I'll grow a pair :)

Well done Chris and co.

You have now caused me a problem, my 6yr old who loves all the parts of the spruit, jumps and burms included now wants to know how to do it like in the video!

We had better get started with the lessons then ;)

+1000 on the awesome vid. Love it.

I am ashamed to admit I have never ridden there myself even though I stay in Jozy. Is a problem when you ride by yourself. I heard you should only travel in packs of 2+ when going there.

Is that still true?

From our shop going towards Emmerentia you can ride alone quite safely.

Saw a certain pretty pink pyga at the Trail Head this morning. You would have sworn I had just seen Angelina Jolie I was so nervous/excited.

Can one drop into The Spruit from the bottom of Peter Place Road? I'll be heading down Peter Place and planning on turning right onto William Nicol and dropping into The Spruit by the Pick 'n Pay. Google Earth looks like I can but not sure if there's a fence. *Sorry for the high jack.

Yup, you can drop in at the dead end on Peter Place.

There is a fence, it used to have a gate, but we rode through there the other day, and now there's a huge opening in the fence.

Great video. I ride the spruit but you guys are clearly on a different level. I have a lot to learn......suddenly feels like I am the lycra clad old man going at sub 10 km/h.........thanks for the inspiration.

But but... the Spruit is the most boring trail in existence. Has no technical features whatsoever.

90% of the clip was filmed within a 3km radius of the Trailhead. The other bit in Emmerentia is 6kms away.

Na, I ride around these sections mostly alone. The thing I fear most is falling and hurting myself and not being able to contact someone or getting help.

Did some of the Spruit and Emmarentia area for the first time on Sunday. Was great but busy! dogs, cats, fishermen, walkers, kids, dogs, kids, dogs. Note to self: get a bike bell for rides like this! Had an awesome ride though.

Did I mention dogs?

Nice vid. I'm jealous.

Of what? You never been to Tygerberg MTB trails before? And no, there is waaay more than just Meerendal and Bloemendal to keep you excited. Try the Cobra and the new and super cool Gorge at Hoogekraal, or the Bloemendaaler including the new end bit in the Bluegum Forest,  or even Contermanskloof for some nice technical sections including the odd jumps etc. And here you need not fear for your life either, unless you're afraid of the odd snake or rooikat.

Still, nice vid. And some good skills.
