Tokai and Silvermine to remain closed to the public

By Press Office · 762 comments

In the interest of public safety, as well as for the protection of the environmental integrity of the Silvermine and Tokai sections of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), park management decided that these two areas will remain closed to the public until further notice.

TMNP management understands that users are eager to access these areas, however they remain very sensitive and unsafe, and public use of these areas are off limits due to:

  • Smouldering and burning vegetation still needs to be extinguished and flare ups will occur as stumps and roots burn.
  • Standing trees that have been burnt or damaged by the fire are extremely dangerous as they continue to come down in the area.
  • Recently burnt veld (as well as adjacent areas) is hazardous as the fire will have burnt roots underground and foot falls may cause serious injuries.
  • Unstable slopes may result in rock falls
  • Winds and rain may exacerbate the danger with respect to falling trees, branches, rock falls and mudslides
  • Hazardous clear-felling operations of the burnt plantation trees are underway by Cape Pine
  • Disturbance to surviving animals
  • Burnt areas are sensitive as windblown seeds can be damaged and the first emerging plants can be killed by accidental trampling
  • Disturbance to sensitive erodible soils

The closure of the burnt areas will be continually assessed and reopening will only be considered once all safety and environmental issues have been addressed. For some areas this may take between six to twenty four months.

TMNP management and staff would like to assure the public that their focus is to secure the areas for the public’s safety and to as quickly as possible rehabilitate the affected sites for future use.

Please assist us by being patient and please remain out of all burnt areas while mother nature heals herself.

From Vince, who was in the meeting this morning with Deon, Sandra and Rob Vogel.

Suffice to say that I have the sads. Will release more info as and when it happens.

Hi Guys

The situation is way more complex than we imagined. We asked lots of questions. Here are some of the points that were explained to us.

1.       Cape Pine requested that the park be closed until logging is finished.

2.       Cape Pine has got a small window to harvest all the pines before its unusable so they  have put all their resourses into Tokai.

3.       No-one is allowed into Tokai that includes Telkom, Sentec, Baboon watchers, runners , hikers, dog walkers etc  and even some of the TMNP staff.

4.       All the massive Bluegums are going to come down and are unsafe at the moment.

5.       The slopes where the pines were have to stabilised .

6.       TMNP is putting in a claim of R36 mil to the government  to remove aliens and stabilise the mountain and do an impact study of the area.

Its shorter than I expected for all the reasons I figured would be in play.

rehab is going to take a long time and I'm guessing pine removal is going to be in stages.

I hope the darn "we need the pines" flora huggers can get over this without incident

They're working 7 days a week, so I reckon it'll be in one fell swoop. If you'll excuse the pun.

I read about that last week sometime!!

But I am expecting it to take alot longer, as these departments wont get anything started anytime soon.

I doubt the felling will start before Spring. If it does then National Parks are going to have to make funds available yesterday for the slope stabilisation

The only way I will happily wait for 18 months before going back there, is if I KNOW that SANParks is REALLY DOING the RIGHT THING for the CONSERVATION of the mountain. This is their chance to SHOW US that they can get it right FOR TOKAI. If they twiddle their thumbs and let the aliens take over and erosion run riot, it will destroy their credibility and I will support taking control of the mountain away from them! Meanwhile, I will support them!

No.

And there is a rumour of a partial refund for activity card holders, but I will provide more info once it's been confirmed and the actual numbers are decided upon. For now it's not finalised.

Just to make it clear - NO.

You can NOT ride in Tokai. If you are caught, you WILL be fined, banned and most likely prosecuted for trespassing. It's THAT serious.

All of it is off limits including the jeep track

Capitan, it's not a rumour..

Parks will just calculate the refund based on the the time remaining on the card, that is of course if you don't want to cycle anywhere else in the reserve.

Glad you highlighted the important bits, several people have already incurred unexpected costs for ignoring the closure, some even despite being warned not to enter. You'll surely read about it somewhere, "unfairly fined in Tokai by SANP", or it will be used against them much later in some unrelated argument..

Let it be said that the value of the fine even invoked a choke from me.. much higher than we have ever made reference to.. considerably. a lot. laaaank!

Logging underway on upper slopes and includes weekends to beat winter delays. Watercourses being cleared for winter prep and wood stakes for silt retention ordered from milling team.

Intervention will continue regardless of emergency funding finalisation timeline.

Lot's of activity right now.. looking good for mountain biking btw.. ;)

ha ha, ja.. no go.

Funny, the first guy was not only in the park while it was still burning, he was on a motorbike too which is really asking for k@k, heard he's from the media.

Myles, Mark, could be that guy we heard making his way up through Chrysalis as that's how he gained access.. it was about that time too.
