Tokai and Silvermine to remain closed to the public

By Press Office · 762 comments

In the interest of public safety, as well as for the protection of the environmental integrity of the Silvermine and Tokai sections of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), park management decided that these two areas will remain closed to the public until further notice.

TMNP management understands that users are eager to access these areas, however they remain very sensitive and unsafe, and public use of these areas are off limits due to:

  • Smouldering and burning vegetation still needs to be extinguished and flare ups will occur as stumps and roots burn.
  • Standing trees that have been burnt or damaged by the fire are extremely dangerous as they continue to come down in the area.
  • Recently burnt veld (as well as adjacent areas) is hazardous as the fire will have burnt roots underground and foot falls may cause serious injuries.
  • Unstable slopes may result in rock falls
  • Winds and rain may exacerbate the danger with respect to falling trees, branches, rock falls and mudslides
  • Hazardous clear-felling operations of the burnt plantation trees are underway by Cape Pine
  • Disturbance to surviving animals
  • Burnt areas are sensitive as windblown seeds can be damaged and the first emerging plants can be killed by accidental trampling
  • Disturbance to sensitive erodible soils

The closure of the burnt areas will be continually assessed and reopening will only be considered once all safety and environmental issues have been addressed. For some areas this may take between six to twenty four months.

TMNP management and staff would like to assure the public that their focus is to secure the areas for the public’s safety and to as quickly as possible rehabilitate the affected sites for future use.

Please assist us by being patient and please remain out of all burnt areas while mother nature heals herself.

Indeed. I think the message really did make rounds on all the other channels. Did you see this pic and the news reports on SABC..?

Check, we are figherfighters! You can't see it here too clearly but that's me in the red running to the back where the flames were..

Extended to May.. please hold, I'll check the date..8 May.

Hi "(insert name here..)". You clearly have an inside line into the anonymous operations of SANParks. Can you please help.

I would love to offer my input on this public participation process. I knew it was due to happen but I only discovered the details when it was mentioned on this discussion topic a few days ago, after the meetings had happened and just before the closing date. Not sure how I missed it, but I suspect it was not advertised very widely. I did not see it mentioned on the TokaiMTB web page, or their Twitter or Facebook channels. I don't think a public participation process was mentioned on at the TokaiMTB AGM. I did not see it in the "Wild Card" newsletter that gets e-mailed out. Nothing in the local press etc.

Any way I have now registered on this web page:

http://www.sanparks.org.za/conservation/park_man/forms/reg_form.php

But either the page is broken, or the person who's job it is to acknowledge/respond is not doing it. Maybe I should try register again?

Then there is a list of meetings that were supposed to be held between 2nd and the 7th of March. Do you know if they actually took place? If they did, where can we get hold of the minutes?

The web site still reads "Written comments are to be forwarded either via email or by mail to Andre Spies, PO Box 787, Pretoria, 0001, by 28 March 2015 for TMNP". If there is an extension to the closing date Ms Merle is not doing a very good job informing us.

I am trying to keep an open mind on this but I get the feeling that cyclists and members of the public are not regarded as "interested and affected parties" in certain quarters.

It's clear that a lengthy process will be required before any of us get to set foot in Tokai again. It's hard to idly sit by. I get that. I share the same frustration as everyone else. The proposed timeline is just preposterous. But as the general public, exercising patience is pretty much all we can do... for now. The TokaiMTB committee represents us all when liaising with SANParks. They speak for the entire mountain biking community who pay to ride Tokai regularly. They want what we all want. They will do what ever is required to try and accelerate the process. When the time comes. They will need our support in the same fervour with which we show our frustration now. Thats what im waiting for. Thats what i'm hoping for. Whether I have to show up for a public meeting to show support, sign my name somewhere, put some cash in the trail builders account or grab a spade. I'll be waiting

Paddy Gordon just been on Cape talk. Tokai and Silvermine still to be closed for 6 to 24 months pending investigation by various experts regarding soil structure and the regeneration of the area. Cape Pine accelerating exit strategy due to the fire, exiting within months.

Areas will most likely be opened in stages according to the impact of the fire and their restoration of the areas affected.

So essentially no change.

Again... We are constantly communicating with parks in an attempt to get in asap.

He did also say that Silvermine wasn't really a safety issue, but experts need to check it out

Yep. But he still didn't change the timeline. I have a feeling that they'll open it up pretty soon. Silvermine, that is. Hope so.

Ok, I've just retweeted the notice from TMNP and will stick something on FB. In the meantime here are the locations where the sessions will be held. We are still waiting on new dates however and will retweet and share when available.

Probably best for anyone interested in these matters to follow Park's twitter and FB feeds. They are putting the notices out but if you aren't tuned in you may miss it..

Best to read the draft plan and have an understanding of it before going in. The presentation really is just that, and serves to answer questions that is not clear in the doc. Pay special attention to the zoning as this is the basis for where mountain bike will be permitted - following it's own planning sessions of course.

If you cannot register online, be assured that you can do so at the info session beforehand. Take a pen.

"Stakeholders are further invited to attend public information sessions at one of the venues listed below and comment on aspects relating to these plans."

Thanks Deon! I will comment further on your new thread when I have a little more time.

But this is time for all mountain bikers to come to the party. Please register your interest on the TMNP web site and attend the public meetings. Now is the time to show our support for our mountain! For convenience the new thread is linked here:

Thinking "out of the box" a little bit about things that could help:

Would Tokai Mtb (perhaps SANParks can write a supporting letter explaining the situation also) think about talking to the Tygerberg Bountainbike Club on behalf of peeps with valid Activity cards? How about negotiating a 50% discount if you join Tygerberg for the next year and you can produce a valid Activity card. Mountainbike brothers standing together and all that! Us Southern Suburbs guys won't ride there quite as often and something like that will soften the blow and generate huge goodwill. It will also help to take the pressure off Tokai for the recovery period.

That's an excellent idea. Would be keen to see how the Tygerberg guys respond.

Emailed.

Any news regarding this?

It is a real pity. I was hoping that by next summer I could take the kids around there. I do hope that the next 18 months will see the complete eradication of the remaining pines and the fynbos recovering properly.

From Vince, who was in the meeting this morning with Deon, Sandra and Rob Vogel.

Suffice to say that I have the sads. Will release more info as and when it happens.

Hi Guys

The situation is way more complex than we imagined. We asked lots of questions. Here are some of the points that were explained to us.

1.       Cape Pine requested that the park be closed until logging is finished.

2.       Cape Pine has got a small window to harvest all the pines before its unusable so they  have put all their resourses into Tokai.

3.       No-one is allowed into Tokai that includes Telkom, Sentec, Baboon watchers, runners , hikers, dog walkers etc  and even some of the TMNP staff.

4.       All the massive Bluegums are going to come down and are unsafe at the moment.

5.       The slopes where the pines were have to stabilised .

6.       TMNP is putting in a claim of R36 mil to the government  to remove aliens and stabilise the mountain and do an impact study of the area.

My cycling has taken a big knock since the fire.  I've even lost the motivation to go out on the road bike.  No cycling since the Argus...  :(

Feel lost without Tokai
