The Outriders Cycle Club are pleased to announce the replacement event for the popular West Coast Express fun ride which will take place on 11 December 2016.

This new event (comprising two distances, 78km and 52km) will use Killarney Race Track as the venue, culminating in what should be an exciting finish on the main race circuit. The Pedal Power Association will be using the event as part of their summer league series and this will be the last competitive event before many cyclists take a well-earned festive break.

The Outriders originally booked Killarney for their fun-filled festival of cycling. The good news is, this event has simply been postponed to a later date, most likely to happen shortly after the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The new route will be more challenging and there is certainly more climbing to be done. Together with the fantastic opportunity for an exciting and safe finish, this is a must-do event to get some racing in the legs before taking time off to celebrate the festive season guilt-free.

The finish at Killarney will be the place to be with Johnny Koen, the MC for the day, giving away some great lucky draw prizes. The VIP Lounge will be open for food and drinks, with great viewing facilities of the finish.
Entries are already open, so enter now at www.theoutriders.co.za

The new route
Both routes leave the Killarney Race Circuit and head toward Durbanville over Tiekie Draai. The long route goes out the back of Durbanville and past Phisantekraal Airfield, before heading to the silo’s and then back on Philadelphia Road, turning left at Adderley. The route then turns right onto Malanshoogte, past Fair Cape Dairies and up the climb to return on Contermans Kloof Road. The route will return past Burgundy Estates, past the refinery and back to the race circuit. The finish will be on the track with a final half lap using the back straight and finishing on the main straight by the pit area.

The short route will go out the back of Durbanville on Adderley and then turn left onto Malanshoogte joining and returning along the same route.

For more information and to enter either the 78km or the 52km, visit http://www.theoutriders.co.za/. Entries will be available at the start venue on race day.

Each year the Outriders Cycle Club hosts a Toy Run, where club members are encouraged to bring toys to a club ride and all toys are donated to a chosen charity. This year, the ride is taking place on Saturday 10 December and the club has invited the public to join in to support this worthy cause. Riders are asked to bring along a soft toy but if people prefer to give alternatively (clothes, food etc), any contributions will be welcome. All donations this year will be donated to Table View Angels & Peacehome (Sunningdale). The leisurely hour-long ride will depart from the Parklands Planet Fitness at 07h30 and riders are encouraged to dress themselves and their bikes in the Christmas spirit and adorn their bikes with their toys.

So its not the fastest, flattest road race on calender anymore. In what state is the malanshoogte gravel road?

The surface is not too bad, though there are some sand and loose stones and some sinkplaat.

I'm thinking of doing this race, however I'm afraid of the gravel road. Will it be tough riding a road bike on gravel? I've never ridden on gravel with a road bike hence the question.

Very easy, just be careful of the loose stuff, skiny wheels don't like that at all.

Just take it easy, unclip before loose stuff and don't jaag over rocks/stones (punchers).

The sharp descent in the final 1/3 is where the skinny tyres will search for grip

Be careful ⚠️

With the 99er the guy in front of me fell and I was caught by surprise how difficult it was to evade the crash given how sluggish the road bike handles on loose gravel.

So I would also suggest keeping a proper safe following distance from the oke ahead of you to give you time to react if things go wrong...

Erbody relax, Look:

1941 people have done that bit of gravel over 10 000 times, and after a quick google search there have been zero deaths reported, its not that bad.

Just a bit of feedback after today:

This race on this route is well worth doing - you have a lekker climb (Tiekiedraai) to shake things up early on, then some fast riding out past Fisantekraal and to the silos (depending on wind direction). Then some good rollers where the group can split again easily, before you hit the gravel section. For me this is best done at speed, but not in a tight group. After that the Malanshoogte climb is a good challenge, before you hit another 3 rollers, a long downhill piece and the return to Killarney. And there you can finally rev your engine a bit more if you still have the legs.

Good route...

Wouldn't quite use the baby's bum analogy. Picked the wrong line halfway in and almost rattled my teeth out...

That said, the smaller bunches also helped, afaik everyone in A bunch at least got through without incident.

Overall, I agree with MildlyWild, good route, Tiekiedraai & Malanshoogte not climbs we often do in races (I see a number of strava segments fell yesterday...)

Feel sorry for the organisers for the low turnout but the smaller bunches definitely made things safer, no one forced across the white lines on the narrow back roads and less testosterone going around than usual.
