The new BMC Teamelite 01 softer hardtail

By Press Office · 41 comments

The Impec Lab has teamed up with the BMC Mountain bike Racing Team to create the new BMC Teamelite 01 – the world’s most technically-advanced hardtail mountain bike.

The high-performance discipline of cross-country racing has become, quite literally, a race to the top. Grueling, all-out sprints to the finish are supported with bikes whose maximum efficiency and minimum weight ethos pay no heed to compliance – until now. The new BMC Teamelite 01 is the culmination of an evolution of race bike performance. Its unique combination of efficiency, traction, and fatigue-fighting compliance technology places it in a category of its very own, and raises the bar by setting new industry standards.

Over the past 2 years, BMC’s team of composite engineers have evolved carbon designs and tested and re-tested MTB prototype function and feasibility at the Impec Lab in Grenchen, BMC’s in-house composites and engineering playground. After a final round of testing with the world’s most successful mountain bikers, the BMC MTB Racing Team, the end result has come to life in the form of revolutionary race performance.

Micro Travel Technology (MTT) – a new Solution for Rear-end Compliance

The new BMC Teamelite 01 possesses an innovative solution to rear-end hardtail compliance, coined Micro Travel Technology (MTT).

With this new system, cross-country racers can ditch the common practice of manipulating tire pressure to gain more compliance for technical descents. MTT’s damping and additional frame compliance smoothes out the ride, let- ting riders apply more power to gain that elusive differentiator; speed.

Micro Travel Technology (MTT)- the Philosophy

Part carbon construction and part technical feature, MTT provides 15mm of rear-end compliance.

It is supported structurally by the dual- guided, fully integrated XCell damper that enhances lateral and torsional frame stiff- ness. Additionally, advances in the carbon technology used for the seat and chainstays, available only at the Impec Lab, maintain pedaling efficiency and guarantee bottom bracket stiffness.

The icing on the cake? All of these invaluable extras create a 1,080 gram total frame weight (hardware included) with absolutely no compromise to race performance. MTT is a clear advancement in cross-country MTB race technology.

Additional Facelifts to the New Teamelite 01

In addition to the compliance advancements in the new hardtail, the rear-end of the bike has also received a facelift with 142 thru-axle spacing.

The new frame design also makes integrated cable routing a piece of cake. Maintaining Big Wheel Concept (BWC) 29er positioning throughout the line, the 2016 Teamelite 01 comes in 5 sizes (XS/S/M/L/XL) with an additional 85mm of clearance on the XS over the previous model year’s smallest size.

Race Proven by World Best in 2015

World champions are allowed to demand the absolute best and most advanced equipment from their suppliers – every second counts. 5-time World Champion and BMC Mountain Bike Racing Team rider, Julien Absalon will put the bike to the test in this year’s World Cup Series. “To be honest, when I tried out the new MTT technology, I was anticipating a compromise” says Absalon, “I’m convinced it climbs just as good as last year’s bike, with a little extra something for the down hills which we definitely need. I’m very happy to have this edge!”

The BMC Mountain Bike Racing Team has been racing on the new bike since February and will use it, paired with the Fourstroke 01, to tackle the 2015 World Cup season and beyond.

I like the tech behind it, looks like it would work well.  But I agree with Marius - it's ugly.  And I'm a massive BMC fan, and have a BMC roadbike!

The previous TE01 looked dreamy, but this one does not float my boat.

EDIT - Maybe it just needs a better colour scheme?

Love it that they've made plan for xc race frames! that little video showing how it works is mint!

Not at all my type of bike, but deffo worth a look.

ummm, if Absolon is going to ride it, it will have to work.

i'm on the fence.. the look could grow on me

I quite like the concept. it seems to provide lateral stiffness and only vertical flex with minimal weight penalty and virtually zero maintenance, which is what you want from a suspension design. I don't think the idea is to replace rear suspension, it is merely an alternative for riders that would prefer something slightly more comfortable than a traditional hardtail.

If I was a competitive marathon racer I would seriously consider this bike.

I like riding my racing hard tail,.A smoother ride over the rough terrain would make it the ultimate in efficiency ,weight and responsiveness .i also ride a steel hard tail and the extra comfort compared to a racing carbon frame is noticeable .I would love to try this out

Damping & rebound control?

I remember early elastomer suspensions (front & rear), the only time the damping and rebound changed was when it was cold out.

You could open those old forks and swap out of the elastomers for varying densities to get a little more feel out of them.....Still would not go back though, kind of like disc brakes going back to v brakes and then deciding that cantilever brakes are actually the real deal.

But on this ht or could be interesting to take the sting out of trail buzz

Much like going from 30 gears to 1? Not quite. This is revisiting seemingly 'obsolete' systems and applying the latest available materials and tech to create what looks to be a good compromise between efficiency and comfort. I don't see it becoming 'mainstream' (it therefor will appeal to the wannabe hipsters out there who cycles with beards, and without shoes and only drink fake beer). It would be interesting to see what Absalon can do with this bike, much like what Nino is doing with 650b in a 29er dominated discipline.

Think TransB, Karoo to coast, that sort of race snake might look to a bike like this.

Anybody know the latest pricing?

pinkbike.com article quoted the frameset at $3599

http://www.pinkbike.com/news/old-is-new-bmc-teamelite-01-introduces-micro-travel-technology.html

from the article:

Components / Price - USD

Shimano XTR / Di2 $10599

SRAM XX1 / $6599

Shimano XT / $4599

Frameset: $3599

in other words, stupidly expensive.
