Team FedGroup-Itec throws Evans a lifeline

By Matt · 147 comments

After finding himself without a pro contract for 2013, following the recent, sudden closure of his team due a doping infringement, multiple South African mountain bike-racing champion, Kevin Evans, has been thrown a lifeline by former rival team, FedGroup-Itec.

Evans has been signed to the growing professional mountain bike racing team for a period of two years (2013-2014). He joins fellow Elite male riders, Brandon Stewart and Neil MacDonald, Under-23 male, Brad Stroberg and Elite female, Bridgette Stewart.

“It’s amazing how the people involved in the FedGroup-Itec team have been so supportive and have given me this opportunity. Also to SCOTT bicycles for their continued support. I am truly grateful and look forward to a being brand ambassador to the best of my ability,” said Evans.

“We were quick to offer Kevin a ride on our team, largely because he’s such a great ambassador, not just for his sponsors but also for the sport of mountain biking. His addition to our team allows us to grow the team to a new level and really tackle the serious racing side of the sport at the highest level with more consistency and confidence,” said Stewart, who also owns the team. “With myself, Kevin and Neil, we’ll have a wide range options in our quest for all the major race podiums in South Africa and even abroad.”

“We have yet to finalise our Cape Epic plans, but Brandon and I have started every single edition of the race and obviously, being the 10th anniversary, it’s a big year for the race and for us each personally in 2013. I’ll be on the start line for sure and riding my heart out as usual. It’s a race I’d love to win still, but I do have my eye on a Marathon World Champs medal too; and with the 2014 Marathon World’s in South Africa, that will be a big focus for me,” said Evans.

For Scott Field, Executive Member of FedGroup, the signing of Evans is another opportunity for growth:

“Life throws you a curve ball every now and then and it’s those that turn the situation around that really show true character. We can identify with Kevin’s curve- ball situation and didn’t hesitate to offer him a contract. In fact, we actually started this team by throwing Brandon (Stewart) a similar lifeline in 2011. It turned out to be sound decision that’s reaped great results.

“Kevin’s got a superb racing pedigree and is a family man, two qualities we can identify with as a business. Signing him up for a two-year period will help give the team stability from which I’m sure the results will be impressive. This is simply also an extension of FedGroup’s involvement in mountain biking in South Africa,” said Field.

FedGroup is the title sponsor of the annual FedGroup Berg & Bush, a series of three popular mountain bike stage races in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

“We’re in this sport for the long haul and signing Kevin up is a pivotal move in our quest to move forward with the intention to grow this team. As sponsors, we have some experience now in what it takes to run a team successfully, so we’re not just being blindly optimistic, we are passionate about mountain biking and see this as a sound investment in the team’s future,” said Gavin Meyer, Managing Director of Itec Connect.

Over an 11-year professional racing career, the popular Evans has been a four-time national marathon champion, one-time Elite men’s cross-country national champion, one-time national Elite men’s road individual time trial champion, multiple ABSA Cape Epic stage winner and overall podium finisher and Marathon World Cup round winner. He has also won virtually every major marathon and short stage race in South Africa.

The team will be riding SCOTT bicycles as a result of the equipment and financial backing the brand is offering to the team in support of Evans, who has helped the Swiss-based brand raise its profile in the growing endurance racing category over the past two years.

We know Kevin is a top rider. Stewart has completed all 9 epics finishing 8 of them in the top 10. This year's epic finishing 10th after a 2 month layoff with Coxsackie virus and on a hard tail.

Win the epic ? Who knows. Contenders ? No doubt !

Not a cool virus that! My girlfriend has a simular virus- Coxnosackie-

With all due respect, even a clean David George/Kevin Evans combo is better than a Evans/Stewart combo, expect more Epic Fail....

Would love to be proven wrong for KE's sake though. Will support them nonetheless.

BS could surprise.

KE & BS won a stage of Trans Alp together. Stewart is the only SA rider to have won a stage in each of the 3 big stage races in the world. Epic, Trans alp and BC Bike race.

Don''t think he should be underestimated.

Past achievements mean sweet f-all, BS has done nothing for the last 2-3 years, current form is what it is about, you're only as good as your last game.....

BS drew a short straw with DCM.

Built a race team from scratch to survive, very good for mountain biking.... Now he can race. All about perspective.

Not too sure of that, BS's best times ITO performance on the local scene was whilst at DCM, he and Knox dominated the local scene during the days at DCM.

While watching SS, I noticed that KE reaches for a chocolate/energy bar and dumps the green wrapper while riding. Come on, keep it clean

At least they will be on decent bikes! Sure that was a deal breaker vir KE. Can't see him being content to deal with as arse like Victor Momsen.

They did say that they are open to KE racing with someone else, internationally, but it will be difficult with sponsors etc. I am glad for KE and it is good that he is racing for a true South African team. I think, even though he want to win the Epic, he probably have 2 more years in him, why not start building a proper MTB team. BS said that they will be targeting internationally stage races as well and that can only be good.

Let's watch this space, I think it is exciting. Also, remember that the Epic is theoretically a "small" part of the season, so the MTN Marathon series and other races are also there for exposure.

Urs Huber. All the top guys from Europe will be there. Also keep a eye out for the Swiss bros Flukinger (spelling!)

EDIT: Flueckiger

Lukas Fluekiger and Ralph Naef are riding Epic for BMC

Wow! I see Absolon also moved to BMC. I am surprized that Merida did not sign Naef (or made bigger effort to sign) for 2013. He is a good guy to have for publicity

Wow, this really is awesome news for BS, KE and Team Fedgroup. Don't underestimate BS, he has had a rough few years and lots of bad luck. Didn't ride for 2 of he last 3 months before Epic and still rode himself into top 10. He is very strong and a lot wiser now. They really could challenge for top 3 at Epic. Not sure how NM will fit into the picture, maybe James Reid is just what they need. That would make Team Fedgroup almost untouchable on the local scene! I wonder how they got out of the Momsen deal for 2013. On FS for Epic it will make for interesting watching! Big up to Scott Field from Fedgroup for extending their support of SA Mtb.

Thanks DG!

Good point Muddy Mike

FedGroup ITEC is a very strong team for 2013.

Big thumbs up to Scott Field and FedGroup and also Gavin Myer and ITEC. They ( itec) picked up BS for the interim months between the demise of DCM and the start of the FedGroup ITEC Connect contract.

Itec has been a stalwart supporter of BS and his visionary team along with the Field family and FedGroup. Good to see a good guy supported by great sponsors.

The story of how the team was formed and now grown is amazing.

Really good for mountain biking.

True re MTN Marathons.

Also some very worthy one day titles to be won. Hill2Hill etc.

KE seemed positive about partnering BS ? Interesting.

Contracting NM as as well BS has built quite a team.

Mature approach on Super Cycling interview very encouraging and bringing new sponsors to MTB. Who is Crusader Logistics ? Sounds like they quite involved. And Kathea ? Heard that name somewhere before.

Will watch this space with interest.

100%. BS is a good guy who has had some rough deals in the past. He has really had a vision for his team and now it being realised. Itec and Fedgroup have been a big supporter of BS and Brandon Els is a firm supporter of KE so if this partnership works out they are going to hot next year. Bridgitte and Brad in Mixed, Brandon and Kevin, Neil and ???. There is still one missing piece to this puzzle........

With mountain biking so big here in SA I'm actually surprised that we don't have more top teams/riders. Think about it, we have 10 really top riders and between 3 of them they will win all the big races. (Knox, Evans, Doper, Mcdonald, Stewart, Woolcock, Bell, Combrink, van Rensburg, Rossouw).

Then you have guys like Buys, Ben-Melt, Goustra, Luus, Reid and Beukes that are so close.

We need more sponsors!

Suspect that BS has found out how hard it is to run a bike team (due to personnel issues) and to have someone like KE who will provide his own momentum will be a relief... this from comments he made at B&B.

For sure! We need 3 power teams. Maybe its time for RE:CM and Westvaal Columbia to contract more guys.
