Statement regarding cancellation of the 40th Cape Town Cycle Tour from David Bellairs

By Press Office · 324 comments

It is with great regret that at 06h38 this morning, we were forced to make the difficult decision to stop the 40th edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

https://www.facebook.com/cycletour/videos/vb.303181639755371/1416836988389825/?type=3&theater

This morning presented a number of challenges, not least of which were wind speeds considerably higher than predicted yesterday. This, combined with a large fire that broke out in Hout Bay in the early hours of this morning, and the added risk of protest action en route, were all contributing factors to the decision made in our Joint Operation Centre (JOC) by the VOC Commander to stop the event.

Our priority first and foremost will always be the safety of all our participants and the risk of injury and potential fatality at the start, at the finish and on Chapman’s Peak warranted this extremely difficult decision. Furthermore, we only made the decision after endeavouring to mitigate all risks to keep the event open.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust wishes to extend its immense gratitude and thanks to the City of Cape Town and all those services involved at our JOC in Tygerberg. This includes Disaster Management Services, the Events Office of the City of Cape Town, Fire and Safety, Traffic Authorities and Metro Police as well as our medical services, Mediclinic, the Provincial EMS and South African Police Services. These relationships have been developed over many years and it is in times of crisis that the measure of these relationships are truly tested. I would particularly like to single out the Executive Director of Safety and Security, Mr Richard Bosman as well as the Executive Mayor’s office for the tremendous support under these trying circumstances.

To all our sponsors, who have backed our decision 100%, our eternal gratitude for your understanding and support. Lastly, to the participants who have invested time, effort and resources in getting to the start line, our heartfelt thanks – ultimately this decision was made in the interests of your safety. To the Rotary Clubs and volunteers who have been standing on the route in difficult conditions, we appreciate your tireless effort and sacrifice.

We are humbled by the outpouring of offers to assist and donate food, product and resources to those in need as a result of us stopping this Cycle Tour. We are in the process of co-ordinating efforts to ensure that goods reach those in need in the fire-affected areas in Hout Bay. We encourage the public wishing to donate to please contact Thula Thula in Hout Bay to donate non-perishable goods. They Mayor of Hout Bay has opened the Hout Bay Sports Centre in readiness to receive perishable goods for immediate distribution into the community.

For us who live out of Cape Doctor land entering the CTCC is a gamble. The outcome of the gamble is for the entrants account. I took the gamble in 2009 and 2010 and will not throw the dice again.

The shortened race again highlighted the gamble.

Should the race have continued and cyclist injured, the organizers would face law suits and and not forgetting angry hubbers posting angry insults at the organizers.

It is a beautiful race to do and if I lived in Cape Town I would enter every year cause all it would cost me is race entry.

Don't be a sore loser when a gamble does not go your way.

Will be back to ride best bits of the route, won't be wasting money on this race again.

See you at Amashova

Whether unrest (distressed communities) or hail stones, the call for safety is the highest

And therefore no refunds under the safety clause

I can understand that, politically, it is important the CTCT peeps have to tread carefully

It's a tough time out there in terms of public relations and all that

Also a critical alliance with the City to sustain

To all those that went out the extra mile to do the 55km mtb last weekend, even tho it was very difficult for most, some of us pushed the extra mile to go for that special medal.......

What happens to this now. Do I still get mine???

I was in one of the first 3 batches to go, and yes wind was insane at the civic center, but after that it was perfectly manageable. I don't buy the wind story.

It's a real pity it had to get cancelled and some people are losing big time. My mate came down to do his first CTCT and only got 19km in. 7k spent on lodging, flights etc. Gets expensive for a 19km coffee ride.

I really hope the organizers can at least meet us half way with the 2018 entries, but won't hold my breath for it.

Agree Dale. Safety considerations and financial considerations should never compete.

Organisers cannot be held hostage by finances not to make a safety call.

I have no problem forfeiting my entry fees today

Very high wind speeds were also measured on Chappies. Organisers wouldn't take us through the worst part only to cancel

I doubt it. Would've been my 5th combi medal. As a side thought the simonsberg conservancy has become barely usable as farm land, no where near the awesome terrain of its former 5yr ago self. I'm still coughing up dust from last weekend ...

I think the organisers should settle whatever debt they incurred, and then whatever is left over split between everyone who has entered. I mean after all, the event didnt start, lots of people were still home and didnt even leave to get to the start line.

But yes, I can well imaging some inexperienced cyclists getting blow off chappies.

It will mean closure and financial ruin for all the charities that are beneficiaries of the CTCT Trust. My view would be a guaranteed entry and discounted entry fee would work well. It can then be planned for ito Trust distributions etc.

We can be lucky....Some parts of the race had wind and other parts had WATER...now can you imagine, I wonder why the race wasnt cancelled

True, surely there are funds after all these are settled.

There are special insurance products for this type of scenario. I am hopeful that the PPA looks at these for future events.

But honestly, why would they?? We will moan for a month then all enter again next year.... they aren't really at risk here.

Or better yet moved entirely. An organizer is spoilt for choice to choose a venue for a MTB event. Id have moved the argus MTB to Paul cluver/oak valley ages ago.

What special medal? The mythical medal for those who did both the 55mtb race and the road race...

Has anyone ever actually seen one of these? Like seen it?

Taking 5000 riders through Oak Valley / Paul Cluver 14 days before 1200 Epic riders go through there? And a month after the 24 hours and MTB series went through there? There will be nothing left to ride after that.

Yes i was disappointed .. and so was my two sons ....

yes we will get over it .... and the safty of the entrants is way more important. Then there is also the fire ... thats a different topic as to why ....

As for a refund ... i know they say no refunds .. and that costs has already been incured ...

like Eddy say settle what must be settled .. and this is my opinion on the left over funds ....

Split it evenly between the charities that they support .. including all the prize money.... AND.. make the amounts public ... it is after all our and sponsors money.

Don't be a sore loser when a gamble does not go your way.

It's got absolutely nothing to do with gambling and being a sore loser.

It is the lack of accountability and arrogance by the organisers that is offensive, the "We've got the cash now we really don't care, we'll use safety as the excuse" knowing full well that they had already sent out severe weather warning on Saturday, shortened the route on Sunday AND used the same wind tunnel for the start that caused problems in 2009. All while knowing the wind was going to be strong.

As for entering every year if you lived in the Cape? We do. That does not mean we can be treated with no respect as we are local. Even without travelling there is still significant cost. Not all of it financial.

Is it worth entering next year? I really don't think it is but my kids would be disappointed to miss out again after missing out this year.

There are tons of trails to choose from to prevent to much overlap if any at all. Would you keep running it in the desert of simonsberg conservancy?

All money goes to charity every year. 50% ppa 50% rotary, both those have community projects that depend on income.
